The Unity Game engine is a fantastic tool but it's not my favorite. It can sometimes feel clunky and bloated to make a games with. But am I wrong? There's only one way to find out! I was challenge by YOU to make a 3D game using Unity and here's how it turned out. Will my thoughts change on the engine? Is Unity's Particle System too strong for Godot? Or will Unity break me one and for all...

Nah
I think I'll place my bets on the bar of soap winning the next NASCAR championship
Very Slippery xD
LOL
i love nascar
Make sure you don't drop it!
No friction…
Its amazing how you produced something with that much quality so quickly. Good job!
I have to say though, I liked the straight edged rocket design more than the rounded version as it reminded me of smth you might find in like military scifi
Yeah, I feel you there! Also thanks o much!
Excellent video! I know the youtube community love unity so it's cool to see you try it out and give honest opinions.
The game looks awesome and has that nostalgic retro racing vibe.
Thanks so much! :D It was a fun challenge.
This video is fantastic! It’s amazing to see how you make your games. The tips you have about testing are super useful. And the game looks sooo good! The post processing looks so polished. I’d love to see more levels come to this if you have the time.
Thanks so much! :D
Great videos as always! I'm so excited to see your future content!
Thanks so much! :D
The final visuals look so nice! Awesome video
Thanks a ton!
I support everything that resembles F-zero, love those racing games :D
This one looks like it has potential as well, who knows what the future brings :)
Thanks so much! :D
I've been using unity for 4 years now and I'm proud of you for sticking to it and finishing your game. I have yet to finish ANY of mine. BTW I also started with construct 2. I made a lot of prototypes that were never released. Kudos!
Thanks so much! :D
I'm a huge fan of racing games
And I gotta say... you really got that "feel of speed" good
Thank you Nice gis for these cool content
Thanks so much! :D
Great Job Goodgis keep up the good work!
Thanks so much! :D

Thank you!
So many devlogs on CZcams skip the concept part. What's your game about? What kind of experience do you want players to get out of it? Often we don't know, it's just straight into coding and feature implementation.
Yeah, it's easy to fall into that.
Awesome devlog as always! Really liked the slick UI, it really pops.
Interesting to see your point of view on Unity coming from Godot. I think the main selling point of Unity for me is the plethora of tutorials and assets available from the get go, but it can also be a rabbit hole!
I’m keen to give Godot a go at some point too. It’s only by looking at different game engines that you realise what the underlying systems do and how to best leverage them imo.
Yeah, the tutorials really make it nice! Also you definitely should, it's worth a shot. :D
Now this is Pod Racing!
I completely identify with your feelings toward unity, I think its an awesome game engine that works super well for a lot of people, but it has always felt a bit clunky for my workflow. Great video as always!
Thanks so much! (Also, I love the quote haha)
Thought you nailed the feel haha!
Great job goodgis! You are an amazing game dev, and your videos are great!
Thanks so much! :D
Really cool that you decided to do it in unity! Cool video, and game
I'm glad you like it :D Thanks for watching!
Star Wars Pod Racer is absolutely underrated! Glad that someone else played it, I'd love to see more games like it!
Heck yeah!
Hey, that’s a pretty cool looking game! I was thinking… a couple ways to enhance the feeling of speed… a simple, very subtle particle effect in front of the camera that moves in whichever way your ship is pointed. Tiny little specks that turn into streaks. Also, go nuts with the motion blur as you hit those hard corners.
Weird idea, how about a powerup that allows you to shoot a grappler cable when you go flying off the track. It could grab the track and sort of slingshot you forward, giving you a chance to keep going. Maybe it’s an expendable. Maybe it’s a core mechanic, who knows. I just kept thinking that it would be cool. Anyhow, keep up the good work
Thanks for sharing! :D I'll have to update the game at some point!
Awesome looking video
Thanks 👍
"I really like the prequels."
Unsubbed, unpatreoned, unbelievable.
True story, the only time I ever received a death threat in my life was from me posting a youtube comment saying I loved Jar Jar Binks.
@@Goodgis oh gosh I remember you telling me that once. I mean I don't like the prequels but good Lord that's WAY too far.
@@Goodgis Really?! HAhahaahah, Yeah but I don't think someone should give u death threat because you like a fictional character.
@@Goodgis Me'sa Jar Jar Binks!
It would have been cool if you had gone a little bit more in depth regarding how you implemented the AG system and driving mechanics and the whole evolution process to better understand why you ended up settling for the third attemp. Real cool looking project, nice work.
Hey, great video as always, your video editing and art style are both super nice! You actually convinced me to try godot, any recommendations on how to learn it?
There are a ton of great tutorials on youtube, just need to search around. :D
Hi there, quick question: in the Conecpt section of this video (~ 1:55) is there a website with such a tool to roll this? I'd like that ^^
thank you so much for the free trial of skillshare
ur da best
No problem! ;)
yeah made a wipeout clone on unreal few years ago. Although i m a long time coder, what I thought would be easy actually humbled me, took me a while to figure out the original one
Can't wait for the video
:D
Hello, how did you manage to make car controller more manageable while turning, care to share some insights? Thank you
Was not expecting a Unity video from you. Especially since i was used to godot.
This might be the only Unity video I ever do haha
Just found your channel and have to say great editing skills you have, Unity is great if you stick to it
Thanks so much! :D
"I really like the prequels."
Well, Hello There General Goodgis!
XD
6:22 also if you ever make more unity games in the future I don't recommend doing this with the UI since it decreases performance, you should get tweening assets from the asset store (I use leantween)
What wuuuut?
@@Goodgis Don’t put animations on the title screen dor those sweet sweet extra frames
so in the end how did you make the car turning?
FREAKING STAR WARS RACER!!! I LIVED on that game as a kid lol.
Heck yeah!
Wow nice game and tutorial
1:58 And which software or website did you use to generate the theme, mechanics??
Please reply!
firith.studio/game-idea-generator
What is the site name to choose game genre and environment? Because I don't really have ideas for a project
firith.studio/game-idea-generator
honestly simplicity is key. people keep forgetting that games where very simple and one note, but they had the one really great note that's why retro and remakes are popular and can even really surprise people I know the RE remake did.
I hope you return to this and maybe set up an online multiplayer version with more content. I really love this idea and I hope that one day you decide to come back to it.
That could be sweet!
Give people access to the unity files so we can mod and add to it.
Nice Game! One Mistake With The UI is that the Text Is Not Scaling With The Monitor So People With A Smaller Monitor Have Some Issues With The UI. The Fix Is Easy. Just Click On Canvas > Canvas Scaler > Check For Something Called 'Constant Pixel Size' And Change That To 'Scale With Screen Size', Then You Are Basically Done. Just Set Screen Match Mode To 'Match Width Or Height' Then Move The Slider Under The 'Match Width Or Height' Thing To How You See Fit.
Anyways, Great Game, Better Than I Could Make in a week, Good job!
Thanks for sharing!
second 20-24 i remember playing that game on xbox is that your game ? (btw this video is really good)
nice game im playing it now
I cannot open it on Mac OS. Says it wont exist. I tried to check security but not alert there to check in order to open. Any ideas pls? Game looks terrific.
I like this idea
Thanks! :D
hi so you used blender to make the track, doesnt look bad at all. was procedural track too much hassle instead of blender (not that i know), general question
I've never made procedural tracks before so yes haha
For someone that doesn't really like Unity you made an awesome looking game. I agree that Godot is far easier to get set up and running then Unity as Unity is quite bloated but its quite convenient to not have to download each plugin so I guess it depends on what you need from an engine.
Thanks so much, it was a fun challenge!
Looks really nice!
Does this changed anything about your opinion on Unity?
I definitely think it's a powerful tool, but I still don't like it haha
hey, those tree and platform asset at 0:16 are looking good, from where did you get then can you provide me the link.Btw game looks smooth.
Thanks! I made them myself.
You definitely need to make a game with c++ and raylib… please
I really want too! :D
Epic video
:D
Awesome
Thanks!
good one
Thanks
Yea curves are good.. is it shader or created using blender?
No, at least I don't think so.
pls what is the website that give u the type of the game
firith.studio/game-idea-generator
Good to know that there is at least someone out there who uses a game engine other than Unity...
:D
Yeah... for some reason I had a lot of issues recently installing unity.
I even wrote a bug report on that and got in touch with support and it still happened a few times.
Now it seams to have stabilized a bit, but who knows?
Yeah, that's the weird thing about it. It's a good engine but I just can't stand that part of it.
@@Goodgis well... I just installed a 3rd version using the 3.0 beta hub. And it went ok after I clicked retry on the editor download. It always seams to timeout on me in the first try.
What site is it that generate themes?
firith.studio/game-idea-generator
It's great
Thanks! :D
1:55 what website is that ?
firith.studio/game-idea-generator
2:00 what is that generator called?
firith.studio/game-idea-generator
@@Goodgis thanks😤
ok i came back ater playing the game it's pretty cool
Thanks! :D
Weird to hear someone talking that about godot, at least for 3d there's not a single feature of that engine that I haven't found a bug, not only on the 4 branch but comming since 2, still moving to unity after learning the basics with godot was way easier.
Where I should learn c#
Can you make tutorial on it
I honestly never use it and there are plenty of amazing tutorials out there. Just search one up. :D
I love unity but I think that is because when I was looking into game dev it was the best option so I went with it, stuck with it and now I can’t bring myself to learning another engine
XD
bro downloaded rocketpods your version very fun
Thanks so much!
@@Goodgis omg your the third CZcamsr to reply back to me btw I am taking a course currently to learn how to make games I am halfway done I will make a game using your profile as a character and making a game with that
can you make a game in scratch, construct 3 , or clickteam?
I've made plenty of games in Construct :D
@@Goodgis ok :D
Reminds me a bit of Fast RMX
:D
Is it possible to make it opensource? Need to see the source code 🤥
My man got a sponsor:)
Ayyye! :D
I don't test Godot with C# , but the learning a new programming language just for Godot can be a tricky issue versus spend time.
I think the effort it takes to learn new programming languages when you already know at least one is something most people overestimate drastically. The vast majority of principles carry over 1 to 1 with slightly different syntax. And when talking about GDScript in Godot, the learning curve is especially flat.
Nah, GDscript is easy to learn!
@@Goodgis yes I used GDScript and works , but now I used C# and Godot has C# , but I don't tested Godot with C#. Also I used Unity 3D and Lua with Roblox - works also good.
I agree with you that installing unity is the hardest part. Maybe installing unreal is harder. I was tried so many game engine like gamemaker, stencyl, scratch. I was made my first game using godot, the game named sky runner. If you want to play it I will give the link to you, its available for Windows, but if you are using mac or linux I can export it to you.
That's awesome!
not to be that guy, but what program/website do you use to generate concepts for games
firith.studio/game-idea-generator
@@Goodgis Thank you so much
I would make the track cylindrical and make the ship rotate around the cylindrical track.
That would be sweet
Hold up, hold up, what tool are you using at 1:56 to generate random ideas? Unless that's just editing magic lmao, in which case... Can someone make that?!
firith.studio/game-idea-generator
I got a 5 sec ad in the middle of the SKillshere ad just before he says "no ad" at 1:20.
LOL that's the worst.
Yeah but can you make the same game be made in Godot 4?? I doubt it LOL
All and all very cool video man I am constantly trying to decide between Unity and Godot. Right now I have switched back to unity because i really hate the way Godot trys to nest which makes it hard to find at least for me
That would be cool to remake it in that.
is audacity okay to use thought it had virus with it?
Nah, though it is spyware now.
Oh my goodness someone should make a racing game where everyone is a bar of soap
ive been hearing so much about godot , it looks much more user friendly then Unity. but Unity just has so many tools that can help the process...
as someone who is more Artist then a coder and uses Visual scripting , would Godot be more beneficial ?
I think it's just all out better to start with Godot. I started it and it is just much more easier but, if you use more Visual Scripting, use Unity.
I've never used Godot's visual scripting, but I think it's easier and less technical than Unity.
If i was to make this game and publish it to console and or mobile would you mind??
As long as you don't call it rocket pods. :D
niice ;D
Thhhhanks!
Make Bloodborne Kart next
LOL
*me wondering how he makes such good videos
BTW Please make a game like fps but with minecraft 😔
Isn't Minecraft an FPS? haha Thanks! :D
6:34 “unity’s menu system is easy to use”
if you’re referring to unity ui, it’s known for being super painful to work with lmaoooo
Especially when you forget to set your canvas to scale with screen size, then you realise you forget and all you ui just goes off screen and you have to fix all of it!
@@CharcoolDev setting the reference resolution for the canvas scaler to the size of your game view should fix that haha
@@n8dev Have I been doing it wrong the whole time????!?!??!!?!?!?
Yeah it's such a pain lmao
Buttons are pretty nice though :D
Best racing game I've ever player is BLUR, but it is only fun when you're playing against friends in local multiplayer.
I'll have to check it out!

@@Goodgis :D
If I can ask, what do you think of Unreal?
It good if you want realistic 3D graphics.
@@Goodgis I would also add that blueprints exist for me, because I can’t/do not like programming.
Wait you find creating a itch page boring ? That's my favorite part when I make a game
It can be, but compared to programming it can be boring! haha
ever consider making a beat-em-up
Yes! That could be fun!
