Luxembourg v Netherlands: Who Has The Best Mountain?

  • Once again this channel asks THE BIG QUESTIONS. When I climbed the Vaalserberg, the highest mountain in NL, a few of you Dutch guys told me it's "a boring place". So I decided to try and prove you wrong, by going somewhere even worse: Kneiff, the highest mountain in Luxembourg. This is a ridiculous idea for a video.

      Yding Skovhøj which was once considered the highest point, includes a burial mound from later part of the stone age or early part of the bronze age. As this is manmade, it should not count. Ejer Bavnehøj a few kilometers further east has a tower which can be seen from motorway E45 between Horsens and Skanderborg. The hill itself was also for long time considered the highest natural (not manmade) point, but some years ago it was discovered, that some of the soil on the top is not in its original place, so this is not a natural point either. Since then Møllehøj a few hundred meters from Ejer Bavnehøj is considered the highest point by a few centimeters margin.

    Tim, I would like to invite you to another challenge. You may have seen the highest mountain in the Netherlands (and now Luxemburg) as well as the cliff of Urk, but you haven't seen the most beautiful mountain. It is situated on the island of Texel (pronounced Tessel), just off the coast of Den Helder. Rather surprisingly it's called 'De Hoge Berg', which means 'The High Mountain'. It's been formed during the last ice age and is one of the main reasons the Dutch dunelike coastline is were it is today. So in other words: it is the anchor on which the western Netherlands has been built. No Hoge Berg, no Amsterdam, nor Rotterdam, nor Scheveningen. Furthermore it's a nature reserve and the views are ABSOLUTELY stunning. And, if you visit in springtime, you can pet the cute lambs that are jumping around in the meadows. And of course it's a great opportunity to visit a real Dutch island instead of URK or Aruba (which is sooooo overrated). Will you think about it?

    The folks in Ecuador made a similar mistake. For them it must be especially embarrassing since their country is named for being on the equator. Anyway, back some decades ago they built a monument on what was then thought to be the equator a few kilos north of Quito. It is quite an elaborate thing with even a tourist trap showing how water swirls one way in the northern hemisphere and the other way in the southern hemisphere. It cost you a few bucks to witness this "natural phenomenon.
    However, the advent of GPS shows the actual equator is about 500 meters to the south. Makes one question the veracity of the water swirling exhibit. Could it be a scam?

      @0LoneTech Před 4 lety +4

      It has been tested fairly thoroughly, and the effect is real but tiny. Matt Parker even made the experiment with one sink. It would be nearly impossible to demonstrate at the equator.

    So Tim has gained 32k subs since this video, just looked at the socialblade stats after watching his San Marino video from 9 months ago (mentioned only having 96 subs or something, was curious) and saw that the figures have shot up in the last week or so.
    Good to see people discovering hidden gem channels like this, well deserved surge, Tim
