This scene is composed entirely of voxels. What started as an innocent attempt at increasing the view distance evolved into a 4 month quest to achieve not only that, but rewrite a brand new voxel engine from the ground up that would feature:
- An 8x (512 cubic) detail increase with animation support, high compression rates, and per-voxel material attributes
- Fast collision detection that physics and player walking will utilize
- Full fracture and mutation of objects
- Improved path traced global illumination that features 5 bounces from the sun, atmosphere and all emissive objects
- A powerful asset pipeline that can utilize Quixel Megascans, PlantFactory/PlantCatalog's detailed vegetation, and other highly detailed polygon models after being converted and processed into voxels (all 3 seen in this video)
- Ray-traced world generation that could easily place trees, grass, flowers, and other assets (eg. crystals) in designated areas: eg. in sunlight, on cave walls, in big open areas, and so on
- A 10x speedup in rendering over the previous engine
Most of these features are showcased in the video. Of course, there are some kinks to work out, like you can see object intersections occurring or being placed in odd places, and the path traced denoiser is lacking a spatial filter, but I got too excited with how this looks that I couldn't wait any longer to share. The effective world size here is 256K^3 and the island is generated once upon startup (like Terraria for instance), which takes about a minute. Things won't look this chaotic in whatever the final version is, as it's more a feature test than anything else.
To those who prefer the charm of the old engine, there is a low-detail mode that will be toggleable. More likely than not, this level of detail will be reserved for RTX graphics cards, and the low-detail mode will be the fall back for older ones. I don't have exact spec predictions yet, because there are so many tweaks to be made like level-of-detail threshold, lighting refresh rates, and the world size itself, so general performance requirements remain to be outlined.
Stay tuned for more updates, as in the future we'll soon see that this world is dynamic and not just there to be looked at. Rigid body physics will make a return, so will fluid dynamics eventually, and really everything seen here is only the beginning. Thank you to everyone who supports this project, and doesn't leave mean comments calling out how I keep saying the next video will be the official announcement. Soon(tm) ;) - Hry
I want to thank everyone for all the feedback I've received over the past few weeks. After a lot of consideration, I've decided to shelf micro-voxels for now and instead put the optimizations towards the "pixel art" style that many of you said you preferred.
There were other factors that went into this decision too, ultimately boiling down to the gameplay possibilities and end-user experience being much better this way. I know the description said that the resolution could just be turned down, but trying to properly create and maintain two unique art styles is overly ambitious and prioritizing one style dictates the features that are possible in the engine. In the future I'll likely revisit this once the game is developed.
Fortunately, all these improvements open some new doors that were previously closed in the lower detail style. For context, this scene used 3GB of VRAM and ran 10x faster at the high resolution than the engine did previously at the low resolution. You can probably gauge what this means going backwards. Voxel manipulations are now way faster and it's significantly less costly to store and trace individual voxels, allowing things like procedural snow build-up, mossy vegetation to grow on user builds, way fancier world generation, seasonal vegetation with growth stages (this was possible before but not realistically feasible), more sophisticated building, smaller file sizes, and the list goes on.
I've been working on a new codebase with these realigned goals that mixes C/C++ for the heavy lifting and C#/.NET for content & modding. There's some more information on my Twitter (twitter.com/ProgrammerLin) if you're curious.
As always, big thank you to everyone that found this cool and supported it, and to those that helped make this decision. I'll be back to showcasing some of these new features in no time. :)
The work you've done is amazing, and I'm sure everyone is looking forward both to what you do with this game, and where you go with your next one 😊
I have no idea what this project is, YT just recommend this. But damn, that is awesome. Excellent work. Totally going to check this out when it's done.
Amazing work, you have single handedly recreated Minecraft, astroneer, terraria and Paper beast with ray tracing! I'd love to playtest this, what hardware do you run it on?
Snow that builds up? Whoah, incredible stuff. I'd guess it will be the same with rainfall, you know, puddles form and evaporate, and such?
By the way, to avoid confusion, I think you should add "discontinued" into the title of this video.
Excellent work!

@@UltimatePerfection Yeah, that's so crazy.
honestly, I disagree... feels like it went from really interesting and enchanting art style to typical okay looking indie developer graphics. The amount of voxels is definently impressive and we are no one to interupt his artistic vision because it is him engine and he can make it look however he wants, but personally I highly preffered the look of the original pixely graphics. Damn, considering the view count alone, there's gotta be several tens of thousands of people at the least out here not only wanting an update to this project, but that are likely willing to sub to a Patreon, willing to help spread the word, and just looking to help out in any way to see this engine become something more, it seems so much progress was made, and now it's been over a year since we last heard anything here, and while your last tweet was seemingly on topic, it wasn't about the engine you were making. I hope you still exist man, this project had real potential.

Similar to what Notch did with Minecraft
Well, that's not entirely true. If you look at czcams.com/users/AtomontageEnginevideos , they have had this level of voxel detail (also with physics) for years but don't seem to actually get anything done with it. They have been in limbo for ages...
@@prltqdf9 yep - I even donated to Atomontage back in the day, now he's got employees and stuff but everything still looks the same and no release date lol. I would pay good money for this type of engine, hopefully Mr. Lin releases his along with the game ;P

So are you
@@yoqqen Aww thank you

this video is part of my daily routine
I'm absolutely flabbergasted at how this can work and somehow be optimized. It looks like 3D geometry exists under the voxels, and that the 3D geometry is what's animated, bit the Voxels are what the graphics 'rasterize' as. The interpolation of frames in animation shows evidences of true 3D interpolation so, that means the engine literally translating the 3D data into a 3D Pixel (Voxel) space and drawing the model accordingly.
I'm just super curious about HOW all this works. How the 3D modeling works, how textures are applied (as again it does not appear to need actual textures except for maybe a single reference texture for drawing a 3D bump map that, uses tessellation to draw the Voxels or... something?
Theoretically this can save a LOT of Video RAM by bot even requiring the textures we usually see in 3D graphics, leaving a ton of room for saving Voxel data. The textures are so natural because the shading and lighting draws over the voxel structures themselves and that's what generates the depth!
This is crazy!
Imagine a higher resolution where the voxels are half the size! This has got to be the future right here!
Please release a demo, even a walking demo. I just want to explore this!
haha is this what accidentally making a piece of digital history looks like.
The thing I'm most excited about this is the physics. I don't mean water physics and basic solid object physics (which are awesome too), but I mean the physics of making complex mechanical devices or even the potential to simulate some kind of chemistry, where some voxels interact with each other to change themselves and do more stuff. That'd be insane, that'd be my dream
WHEN ARE we gonna get another youtube video!!!!! this is the coolest thing on the entire internet, you can't just ditch the project like this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One day this king left without telling us he was not going to come back

This is REALLY nice. I definitely solves problem of the previous engine that gave the illusion of everything being out of focus. Everything looks very clean and crisp now. A bit overexposed, but that's just a lighting issue.
Next update: Voxel size decreased to ~4.222 × 10^-105
meters cubed
This is just so beautiful. It's incredible how smooth it runs despite all the detail and lighting. I'd love to see some other important features of a voxel engine (mainly a dynamic world that can be destroyed and built) demonstrated. And I'm even more curious to hear about the data structures/engineering behind everything. I have to admit that I was already here long before this comment, read everything in the blog, watched most of the videos, looked at your twitter but there was no sign of life.
