For compost I think you'll find Clover Seed and Modular compost really good. It's 6 quid for an 80 litre bag at East Riding Turfcare, so nicely priced. It's 5 percent sand, graded to 6mm and has wetting agent as well.
I've heard of this one and will look to trial it at some point.

I used Barenbrug Extreme a couple of years ago, loved the colour but it didn't cope well with shade and the winter. Last year i trued A1 Platinum Pro, dwarf rye & fescue mix was better at the shady conditions, but i wasnt happy with the colour. This year I got MM50 dwarf rye from the brilliant Green Care. Not sure if it's bad to keep changing varieties though 😅
First time using the Barenbrug so willsee how it copes. The Premier Pitch is 100% ryegrass and that coped reasonable in winter. The bottom end of the lawn in the shade struggled, but you'll get that with majority of ryegrass varieties.
The A1 stuff will cope better with the fescues in it are more winter resistant shall we say. But I'm looking forward to cutting the Barenbrug in anger soon

Yeah. Will stick with Johnsons on the sides and when I get round to doing the back as it's great. This affords the opportunity to cut super short
Be keen to understand what your thoughts are on wetting agents as this year I’m think of applying one. With the sunshine down South just noticed it’s running off the lawn that has had compost on and ideally need to be soaking in. Ideally need a wetting agent to help with water penetration as keen to keep the seed damp now the temperature s have warmed up ! Any suggestions?
I've never used a wetting agent. Hopefully I won't need to on the two lawns I've renovated this last 6 - 8 months as the sand is very porous and free draining as it is. Any pooling of water slowly permeates through.
I have heard of people using baby shampoo for this as wetting agent is just a surfactant, breaking that surface tension.
Brilliant stuff can’t wait to see this green up , jacks magic sadly was destroyed when it went peat free. I’ve managed to source a pallet of Bathgate red and brown , before it went kaput they piled sand in to bulk the bag up so it’s excellent for top dressing. Don’t make it any more tho
It's peat that's a bad name. Let's see how it performs. Was happy with the lidl stuff last year so hopefully some quicker and improved germination on this with the Jacks. Will need to put an extra bit of water on it now without the peat.

16:36 two 50L bags cover roughly 38sqm, thanks for mentioning this as I have 36sqm(ish) so I know how many bags I'll need, roughly.
A rough estimate using a roller and a good bag of compost!

Just a basic one from amazon, the oregon sprayer, 15ltr I think.
More expensive ones out there but I'm cheap.

Great job mate, this hot spell is set to change by Monday with us, and temps drop to about average again of around 16 degrees, but even so I reckon in the next four or five days, you should see germination.
What made you decide to not use Johnson's prem pitch seed again? That is 100% perennial rye mix, and you mention this barenbrug is also 100% perennial rye mix, so just curious why the different seed this time?

Just moved to the Barenbrug extreme as I was originally toying with having a bent grass lawn here for a super short cut, but chickened out as it can be harder to manage. The barenbrug extreme dwarf rye will allow th super short cut like bent when I get a new mower. Will be keeping to Johnsons on the side and the back though
@@TheReelMowingMowingClub nice mate, yeah I follow another you tubers channel mushroom galaxy and his lawn is out of this world, he uses a mix of Johnson's prem.pitch and MM50 which is a dwarf rye the same that is used on Wimbledon tennis courts, and can be cut as low as 4mm, so pretty sure your barenbrug dwarf rye will look just as great as the MM50 does, keep us updated as soon as you get germination 👍🥳🙏
@markslade9722 yeah, @mushy_GLX has a great lawn, and lovely little back garden. He's started to use greencare for his ferts now too which is great!

If Britain's best lawn was still running I said to Joe he should enter It, and pretty sure he would win first prize. Such a shame it looks like they stopped running it a good few years ago now as the last I can find info was from about 2017😥
Maybe where I'm going wrong the last few years of renovations I've only been over seeding at a rate of 35g a square metre as per instructions on the A1 website but it always looks thin when the lawn establishes and i'm after a thicker sward.
Maybe I'll try a higher seed grammage per square metre ie nearly double it !
I had read that a too high seed rate can impare the seeds growth ?
However if it doesn't and it gives me the thick grass I want them maybe it's my way forward in the future ? 🤔
It's a fine balance. With all seed that is put out, some won't germinate, some washed out, some will get picked off by birds (if not fleeced), and some my not make it to second leaf stage. With rye grass being a bunch type plant, one seed will produce several blades so some overcrowding can and will happen, but too few seeds leaves it too sparse in my experience (and yours). With this being a dwarf rye, the spec on the seed is to seed at 25-50g m², so by going above this to around 60 - 65 g m², should cover for any fallout and losses.
This will also lend me to needing to verticut regularly when established.

About 15 I think. Bit don't take this as standard. Put it on a low setting and adjust accordingly

What made you go with the barenbrug over johnsons again?
The Barenbrug extreme dwarf rye gives me the option of having a super low cut.
Johnsons allows a cut down to 12mm, whereas the Barenbrug will allow to go as low as 2mm. I won't go that short, but if I can in the future get to 6mm it would be great. I was originally looking to have a bent grass but backed out and went for this
Why didn’t you use Johnson premier pitch?
It offers a lower height of cut. Johnsons Premier Pitch is best at around 20mm. This area was was looking to go full bent so I could have a super low cut but backed out concerned of disease and management of it. This rye will be more versatile to have a much shorter height of cut if I want it
How long will you keep your fleece on?
So far I have I had mine on for 2 and a half weeks for my newly sown lawn. The bent and fescue is about 20-30mm. I'm thinking of taking it off tomorrow as water isnt getting to the other seeds as its lifted up. I'm worried the squirrels and cats will dig holes though lol. I would love to leave it on for longer but I used one for an overseed and had terrible germination as the old grass lifted it up after a few days. I'm watering that until the weekend to see if anything more happens. If not ill overseed another 20g / m2 of bent / fescue (initial seeding was 50g / m2). I'm trying to crowd out the rye and smooth stalk meadow grass that exists in it. I'll never use a fleece for overseeding again as I seeding a communal lawn at the same time and have had really good results from just dropping seeds and watering.
Last year the fleece was off 10 days after seeding however I had loads of good germination from day 5, and by day 10 it was pushing through the fleece. Hoping for similar but we shall see.
I'm fleecing to try and protect the seed from birds , retain moisture and heat to aid germination. The side lawn I did the renno on has been left without fleece and I'm starting to see germination after 4 days but only sporadic
The last lot of Jacks Magic i used was full of small stones. Even Daniel Hibert has stopped using it. The new formula is rubish. The old stuff was great.
First time I've used it for a while and this came out great. But as I said in the vid, I'm not paying 16 quid for a bag of compost. Only spent 6 quid each on these bags as the Lexiington was the worst ever

How are you finding the sprinklers? Do you have a link please?
Sprinklers are great in conjunction with the water pump I have. Only down side is that the are under the sprinkler doesn't get that wet, as the spray is sent away from this, unlike an impact sprinkler where you have a bit of a adjustment plate, which means you need to set the Grunteks back a bit

Quick question I'm going to be in a similar position to you. How long did you let the soil sit for and does it matter if you do or not?

I finished preparing the area on 27th April, and left it util 8th may, watering it infrequently to try and get the sand to settle. Doesn't really matter, but it should help a little bit.
When did u add the bone meal?
Just after seeding to act a bit like a pre seed fert.
It's high in phosphorus which promotes strong roots

@@RaviMistry-io6fo I used some Doff stuff I picked up from B & M for 2 quid. Seed should be fine without feeding, but it helps, so anything with high phosphorus will improve the root development
