  • On the 11 November 1920, the Cenotaph - Britain's National War Monument - was unveiled in London. Originally erected for the First World War, it today commemorates the 1.27 million British service personnel who have lost their lives since 1914. To mark this Anniversary, and that of the 11 November 1918 Armistice, I share the stories of eleven soldiers who have served in the British Army over the past 100 or so years.
This video is dedicated to the men and women who have served, and continue to serve, in the British Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and Royal Marines.
"When you go home tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow we gave our today."

On the 100th Anniversary of the unveiling of the Cenotaph and the 102nd of the end of the First World War, I'd like to also pay tribute to three veterans of the Second World War who are sadly no longer with us.
    - George Wane, 4th Battalion King's Shropshire Light Infantry, 11th Armoured Division. George served in Normandy and during the liberation of Antwerp in 1944. I had the honour of meeting him and his family in August 2016. George passed away in December 2017.
    - Jack Griffiths, Glider Pilot Regiment, 1st and 6th Airborne Divisions. Jack served in Normandy and at Arnhem, the latter where he was taken Prisoner of War. I met Jack in his Norfolk home in September 2017 where we spoke about his role during Operation Market Garden. Jack passed away in November 2017.
    - Robert Noody, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. Robert served in Normandy, at Eindhoven and at Bastogne before ending up at Berchtesgaden. Robert was the first veteran I had the opportunity of meeting when he was on a visit to Aldbourne, England in May 2014. Sadly, Robert Noody passed away in April 2020.

They are being lost in part due to contemporary sensitivities which dictate to us that to celebrate our war dead is not "progressive".
Many Liberal upper middle-class educators, policy makers and scholars believe that the act of remembrance does little but "Glorify" war and leaves an unpleasant aftertaste of imperialism, Empire and exploitation.

We remember the crew of the HMT Bedfordshire. On the 10th May 1942, while assisting the US Navy with anti-submarine operations off of Cape Lookout, North Carolina, the Bedfordshire was lost with all hands when she was torpedoed by a German U-Boat. Over the month, the bodies of 2 of the Bedfordshire sailors, Sub. Lt. Thomas Cunningham, husband and father to a newborn son whom he would never meet, and Ordinary Telegraphist Stanley Craig, along with 2 unknown sailors of either Royal Navy or Royal Canadian Navy, washed up Ocracoke Island and buried with military honors in a small graveyard in the village of Ocracoke. In 1976, a deal was stuck to lease the small cemetery plot and another small British Sailor Cemetery on nearby Hatteras Island in perpetuity to Great Britain. On Ocracoke, a nearby plaque reads: " “If I should die think only this of me
/That there’s some corner of a foreign field/That is forever England.” Lest We Forget

In a twist of sad irony, my grandfather fought in WW1 with the Black Watch, Royal Highland Regiment of Canada and survived from beginning to end, including Vimy Ridge. He lost his leg in a work accident a few years later. His son, my uncle also fought in WW2 with the very same regiment and was killed only weeks after D-Day 1944. In an even more sad irony, my father who was only just too young to fight in WW2 found out by complete accident that his best friend held my uncle in his arms when he died. Lest We Forget...

Please do one on HMS Royal Oak which went down on 14th October 1939 with 835 crew lost. Of those lost was the biggest number of 14 and 15 yr old
boy Sailors ever lost by the Royal Navy, indeed due to the devastating loss of boys, never again would that be allowed to happen. One of these boys lost
was 15 yr old Maurice Ryall, listed as a signaller, my great uncle, who was just one of those many many heroic Boys....
God Bless the boy of the Oak and when the left are desecrating our monuments of remembrance, may we fight back with their valour and righteousness.

My father travelled from Dublin in 1939 aged 19 to Liverpool where upon arrival he enlisted in the RASC to become a vehicle mechanic. He was attached to the Desert Rats and served mostly in N Africa though he was in Europe for a while too.
Dad left the army in the late 1940s as a WO2 and settled in the small town where I was later born in the early 1970s. Dad had been present in several major battles and came through everything without even a scratch.
When I tried asking dad about the war all he'd say was, I was lucky and then he'd go quiet. I learned not to ask.
Dad lived long enough to be present at my Passing Out Parade and for that I'm glad. He seemed to swell in size and barely leant on his walking stick. For me it was good to hear my training corporals, sergeant and officer calling dad sir and showing the utmost respect to him.

This is an important reminder of the chaos and randomness of war. Heroic soldiers often die in sudden and non heroic ways. It is important that we remember these soldiers who died to random artillery and builders as much as remember those who died showing Valour and courage in combat with the enemy.

My grandfather James Paterson of Helensburgh Scotland was wounded and lost an arm in WW1. He carried his mate, who lost his leg, for several miles to safety. They were the only survivors. My father Tom Paterson was in Berlin at the end of WW2 when a sniper narrowly missed him, the round went through the open hatch of a Tank and killed two men. I almost wasn't here enjoying my today but thanks to luck or fate I am, and had I not left England at the age of 12 I would have been a Soldier too - I was already in the Cadets. The sad thing is we're at the same point again in spite of the sacrifice our ancestors made. The Human Race has a long way to go before we finally emerge from the kindergarden as wise men and ready to take full responsibility for our selves. If we dont hurry up, soon it will be the Earth itself that (hopefully) narrowly survives the unbelievable pollution and waste caused by war while the morons in charge rabbit on about "climate change" and "Reset" so they can remain in charge and continue the carnage that they caused in the first place. REFUSE to participate take RESPONSIBILITY for yourself and GROW UP! That is the reset we need...
