- RIP Banner Thomas
Today is the one year anniversary of the death of Banner Thomas, a founding member and bassist for the band, Molly Hatchet.
The song is the title track of Molly Hatchet’s album, “Flirtin’ With Disaster”, which came out in1979.
The first band I was in played quite a bit of Southern Rock, mostly Lynyrd Skynyrd. When this song came out, I remember thinking that Molly Hatchet seemed to be trying to ride on Skynyrd’s coat tails a bit with this new, heavier Southern Rock. What did I know? I guess we were going to try and play the song, as I remember attempting to learn it and having a pretty hard time of it. It had this shuffle-thing going on and lots of little “pick-up” notes that proved a little too tricky for me to grasp at the time. I still find it tricky. One thing that I thought was really cool was how (during the pre-chorus?) the bass stayed on the B/5th/octave and the guitar chords moved around it. I think that may have been the first time I had ever heard something like that, or took notice of it anyway. It seemed like voodoo to me, like, “How could that work?”. The bass plows ahead rhythmically as well. I found that if I concentrated on that part too much, or too little, I’d screw it up. This would explain the look on my face during these parts of the song.
On a personal note, Lynn and I happen to be well acquainted with Bill Frazetta who owns a “Horror Shop” in Milford, PA, Frazetta’s Fantasy Corner. We’ve been going there for well over 20 years and Bill is a great guy who loves horror. Anyway, Bill’s father is the late, Frank Frazetta who did the artwork for the first three Molly Hatchet albums and is widely known as the creator of the “fantasy art” genre.
I’m playing the Ol’ Guild B-301 that’s been fitted with a Zero-Mod Thumbrest.
That little pattern during the chorus is so cool. Never noticed how much of the groove the bass was holding together on this song.
It is neat, isn't it? I just plows straight through the entire part of the song.
I couldn't agree more! Love playing this bass line or just listening to it.
Every time my band calls out a difficult number to learn, Professor Troy is my first call. Sure enough, the Master nails another one. Thank you kindly. You truly rock.
Always glad to be of service. Thanks so much, Jeff!
I had a hankerig for Molly Hatchett today and went down a Utube rabbitt hole. I cam accross this and as usuall very nice work. I think the 70s was a fantastic decade of bass players. Musicians did runs and even the disco era carried some great bass playing. I covered this jam in a band back in the 80s and that entire album was killer!
Awesome! I’m glad you liked it. I agree with you on this era of music being particularly good.
Damn dude. Excellent! Nice bass collection!! Even Banner would be proud
Thanks a lot!
My goodness you make this piece look so easy...keep them covers coming and thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much, Adrian!
Very much appreciate your musicianship on this, one of my favorite bass lines. Some of the old southern rock musicians live in the area and I found myself standing in line at “Mickey D’s” behind Banner Thomas one morning several years ago. I didn’t bug him, just a smile & a nod on the way out. 🎸
Thanks! Very cool!
One of the best bass lines ever, nailed.
Awesome! I’m glad you liked it.
This song swings so hard, and the bass is key to making that happen. Thanks for giving us an up-close look!
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment!
Another masterclass by Troy!
Thanks so much!
Sooo tight,,Great job
Using this as a lesson,
Heard it on the radio last night and decided to record a cover. Two main gtrs are done, time to learn the bass, on a smoke break, lol
Which brought me to you…
Thanks again, Cheers from Northern Ontario 🇨🇦
Rock on!
Banner Thomas was a beast. I was 9 when this came out. My older brothers turned me on to this classic southern rock jam. I thank them often for letting me hang in their room and getting me into music. And I thank you for posting this Troy. And that bass sounds great my good dude.
Awesome to hear. Thanks a lot.
TJH3113 Anytime my good dude.
Man, as always you rocked this. I so enjoy watching you play
I appreciate that!
Great work man, I’ve been watching your covers for years, particularly the Rush stuff. Love seeing more Southern rock on here.
Thanks a lot, Ian!
2 thumbs down on this? Are people that blind or will fully ignorant to outstanding playing and good southern rock with an edge? Whatever. Troy, fantastic job as always. Thanks.
I've got 2-3 people who give every video a thumb down. I don't take it personally. My like/dislike ratio is surprisingly high. It's actually a little sad that they actually go out of their way to do it. When a cover doesn't get a thumb down, I worry about them a bit and hope that nothing happened. Now, what I was really shocked about was that one of the Dixie Dregs show clips got 5 thumbs down - that's just wrong!
Thanks a lot.
2016 Road King I didn't give it a thumbs down, but I came close just because I hate, and I mean hate, this song. It used to be in some Nascar game for Playstation, and it would play on repeat for lap after lap...it doesn't hold up to repeated listenings.
B gilley Well, I could understand that a repeated song on a constant loop would make anyone feel that way. But I have to pose this question: if the song playing on a constant loop every lap was your all time most favorite song would you still feel the same way (grow to hate the song)? I'm just curious.
TJH3113 lol
2016 Road King No, I don't think I'd grow to hate a song I genuinely love just from repeated listenings. I mean there are many classic songs that have been played to death that I still like. I just don't think this is a very good song. It's like all the cheesiest parts of southern rock combined with vapid lyrics and a vocal performance that I genuinely despise.
The great Banner Thomas!
Power!
I really enjoyed learning this . I have wanted to play this for years. Thank you
Awesome! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Take care!
This was "our band" at the time - my friend and I saw them 5 times in the space of 2-3 years around Chicago. Always a straightforward, no-BS show that did not disappoint. Was a little less cool when Danny Joe had to take a break, but we still supported them. And we got to meet the replacement singer out in the arena one time. Great musicianship, both the band and you, Troy! Keep them coming!
Very cool. Glad it brought back some good memories. Thanks so much.
Great cover and playing. This one is also a beast on the guitar as well trying to cover all the parts. Those southern rock bands knew how to rock.
Thanks a lot. Yes, they did!
Troy I think it is fantastic how you choose to cover such a diverse range of material for these videos. It never ceases to amaze me how proficiently you accomplish it also. You are a tremendous player and thank you for doing these videos.
Thank you so much for the very kind words.
You cover all the songs I love! Your playing is getting me through retinal detachment recovery which means keeping my head down constantly. Thank you!
That's great to hear. I hope your recovery goes well. Keep your head up.... er, I mean down. Take care.
@@TJH3113 Thanks T. 🌸
Honestly, you make all the basses sound good, but everytime you pull the Guild out, I am absolutely blown away by the tone and depth of sound.
Thanks a lot. The Guilds are my favorites as well.
I will learn this song from watching you, the best video i found for precise playing,. very cool, . you are amazingly talented to be able to play so many songs so perfectly..i always enjoy the videos you have..thank you for sharing your great talent with us,..
Awesome! I hope it's helpful. I recently found out that there is an isolated bass track on CZcams. Maybe that might be of some help too? Thanks and take care.
I LOVE this!! It's one of a few songs you could liken to either a tsunami, landslide or a ski jump! You take a deep breath, push off from the top and then enjoy the unstoppable ride! There really isn't a second spared in this - whether it's the bass or one of the guitars you're listening to - and it's a tribute to the 'recording speed' of Troy's ears that he could accumulate it all and present us with this superb rendition. Certainly not for lightweights!!
Great analogies and analysis. Thanks for the great comment and the kind words.
Man, thank you so much for this!! I got assigned to learn this over the weekend and after seeing you do it, it's not really too tough. Thanks again dude!! BIG FAN!!
No problem. How did it go? There was definitely more going on in the song than I thought there was before learning it.
Awesome job as usual. 👍
Thank you.
I'm still rocking with ya. Great stuff brother.
Thanks Terry!
Banner always had what I believe to be that great Peavey tone.
Could be. That was about the time they came out.
Awesome ! thats some ass kicking southern Rock !!! your the best Troy Hughes !!
Thanks Cindy.
1st concert I ever attended: Molly Hatchet.....1980. Couldn’t hear properly for 3 days. 🎸👂
Very cool!
I learned half of what I know from watching your videos. Awesome man. Thanks for posting this one. One of my favs. I always look for the videos of the dude with the mask wall, lol.
Awesome, that's so nice to hear!
Outstanding. Many thanks.
Thanks a lot.
Our band used to play this and “Dreams I’ll Never See” at the end of 520 Causeway and US 1 in Cocoa Beach back in 1982. This will be another I on my wish list to play bass on. I can almost smell the ocean from here! 😂😂 Thank you so very much!
Thanks for sharing such a cool memory. I hope you get the chance to relive it.
I love your tone.
Thanks.
What a fun song and great bass line. Well done, sir, well done.
Thanks Phil!
There are some nice stretches with this one! Outstanding job!
Yes, there are. Thanks.
Kicking out those Southren bass runs ... killer Troy. ✌🏻
Yeah, that's me. Thanks.
Merci à vous pour avoir rendu hommage à Banner et aussi à Molly Hatchet. Vraiment sympa.
Merci pour la montre. Je suis content que tu aies aimé.
C'est normal. Quand on aime on souhaite partager.
Woo hoo. 🎉 Back in business!
Yeah, that was a lot quicker than I thought it was going to be. Thanks so much for the tip! I actually went through all my videos the other night to see if anything else was blocked. There was only one, “Holy Diver” by Dio.
Great playing! I'm just across the river from Milford. I'll have to stop in and check out the shop some time!
Thanks! You definitely should. It's a great shop and Bill is a super nice guy.
Kick ass!! Wow can't remember the last time I heard this!!! Great job. 😲
Thanks!
lol geez i was 16 then...brings back memories..still got that album on vinyl...thanx for the little history lesson of learning it back in the day....You mention Milford, PA, Frazetta’s Fantasy Corner..small world i'm in Dingmans Ferry!...Frazetta’s use to be in E. Stroudsburg i believe, they use to have a store there with the haunted house walk-thru upstairs..too funny!..Anyway, good job on the cover!
Actually, I've got to go back and correct that (thanks for reminding me). His shop is actually in East Stroudsburg, PA. We pass through Milford and Dingmans Falls on the way there. There's a great shop in Dingamans called "Phoenix." We've been going there forever too.
have to check it out, lived here 18yrs and never went to those shops off the main street..There is some cool stuff back there i hear!
This is a cooker! Loved it🤘.
It is, isn't it? Thanks!
I’m just learning the bass at the age of 56. I’ve never played anything before. I think I saw where the learning of the scales comes into play on this song.
Thanks for making part of my lessons make more sense!
Awesome playing sir!!!
That's great to hear! I hope you enjoy it. Thanks!
Thanks Troy, this will help for sure!!
Glad to hear it!
Sounds fantastic.
Thanks.
Expertly done once again! The only thing better than Southern Rock is Jethro Tull as you know when you play it. Cool to learn about Frank Frazetta. That artwork on those album covers was unparalleled. I marveled at that creativity and detail. That was big time talent. Thanks for sharing that information.
Thank you! I'm glad you picked up something from watching the video. Take care!
More music I grew up on, every time I think about making a request I find that you've already covered it. Thanks again Mr Troy
Just trying to keep ahead of the requests. You're welcome.
Spot on as usual,nice work
Thank you kindly.
A classic!
Truth!
Exquisite! Man, you ALWAYS knock it out of the park, Troy!! I love lurking on your site. This is one of my favorite tunes and this was a nice remembrance of Banner Thomas. Beautiful Guild, by the way. Definitely an under appreciated guitar company.
Thanks so much. I'm really sorry I did not get a Guild much, much sooner.
Loved it...
I'm glad. Thanks.
This is fantastic…wicked tone
Thanks Sean!
brother, there's just nothing you can't play! You're equally as good or better than some of the originals! Fantastic cover my friend!!
Wow, thanks Stephen! I would never say that. All the credit goes to the people who wrote, recorded, and performed these bass-lines that I play. I'm just a decent mimic. Take care!
My sons and I love hoor too. Like this very much Troy!
Thanks.
Oh man sir, this is one of my favorite classic rock bass line tunes of all time. Hats off!
Awesome! I'm very glad that you liked it.
Fantastic work, brother. That song is on my workout playlist that I listen to while doing cardio. Constant motion in the bassline - really drives the song. Staying on the B during the whole chorus is absolutely genius. When people ask me who my favorite bass player is it's always tough because EVERY band in the 60s and 70s had great bass players. Paul McCartney, Jack Bruce, Jack Casady, Berry Oakley, Leon Wilkenson, Banner Thomas, Roger Glover, John Paul Jones, Randy Meisner, Chis Squire, John Entwistle, Phil Lesh, Dave Hope, Ross Valory, Phil Lynott and of course Geddy Lee - to name few. In those days the bass was a preeminent sound in popular music from Motown to rock, pop, dance, funk and folk. Not only doesn't recorded music sound as good today the BASS doesn't sound the same. I LOVE the PRESENSE that the 60s and 70s bass had in music. Thanks for posting this - peace.
Thank you Joel, I appreciate it. It really is a much better bass-line than I ever gave it credit for.
Great cover and great story. Those album covers were awesome! I'd love to see more Molly Hatchet covers.
Thanks a lot. This is really the only song I've ever heard by them...I think.
wow.. nicely done! never realized what a rocking line this was... great job!
Yeah, it's pretty cool, isn't it? Thank you.
Props from another bassist. That's the real deal. Thanks for quality playing and through full songs in one video take. Nice timing, feel, accuracy to originals. I'm same generation of music, bro.
Thanks so much.
One of my favorite songs of all time. Superb!
Rix Pix ح
Glad you liked it. Thanks.
...hmmmm, '79? I was solidly in the jazz-rock fusion and progressive rock genre at the time and can't say I ever knowingly listened to a Hatchet tune. Maybe I missed something during those years? Thanks for posting - top shelf as usual - I guess I need to find me some other Hatchet tunes and give a listen.
Thanks a lot. I've got to check out some of their other stuff as well.
Freaken amazing job there guy. Nicely done. =)
Thanks a ton Hugh!
Excellent cover! This brings back a few memories since Molly Hatchet was one of my favorite bands back then and I still love their music today. A band I was in (early-mid 80s) did Molly Hatchet's version of "Dreams I'll Never See" which was a favorite of mine to play. As much as I liked Lynyrd Skynyrd, I liked the edgier bias of a little more rock and just a tad less southern that Molly Hatchet had. The guitar harmonies, vocals and drumming were all great but it really was the bass that got my attention with this band. For me, it was the perfect blend of plowing ahead rock bottom rhythm, bouncy riffs and a clear, ringing tone. I had my black Guild B-302 at the time which seemed tailor made for playing their music. Thanks again for all your great covers!
Very cool! Thanks for the great comment.
Very nice, this is one of my favorite tunes to warm up to. Nice to see you play it so well.
Thanks. Pretty tough for a war-up exercise, if you ask me. haha.
Molly Hatchet's early album cover art was the best, I can still stare at that for hours. I never really thought it matched up with the music on the records, though. That first album was great.
I'd have to agree with you.
Always loved how Banner(RIP) walked those lines in early Molly Hatchet.
Great tone, great job, Troy.
I've got to check out some of his other songs. Thanks.
Wow, great performance.
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it.
Brilliant
Thanks.
Wow,AWESOME JOB Troy!!! As one who's NEVER been much of a lover of "Southern Rock"...........I truly saw the focused concentration on your face while playing this entire song, and I agree.............there were some bass parts in this, that (if I were a bass player),I'd be like "WTF?" while learning this song!!! Lol. So your description is completely understood!!! Lol. I'll end this by saying RIP Banner, and as always Troy...........Awesome Cover!!! :)
Thank you. I've never been much of a Southern Rock guy either, but I can appreciate some of it.
Excellent again! I used to play this one long ago. I'll need to dust it off and put it in the suggestion hat. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks. My pleasure.
very nice. i remember trying to learn the guitar parts in my guitar days, never got the solo stuff. never realized how fun the bass was on this song as well.
Thanks.
Thank you so much for highlighting the bass line to one of my favorite songs.
It is my pleasure. Thank you for watching.
