Did this really just happen? There I was, randomly listening to Like a Prayer thinking: _"Wow. This actually has super cool bass parts. Let me see if CZcams has some useful info on how to play them... Hmm, what about this dude?"_ He rambles for a few minutes, I almost get bored, but then he off-handedly mentions Robert Palmer and Pink Floyd and it's daunting on me: _"Hold on, is this the original session bassist?!"_ He soon confirms my suspicion, then not only plays the fun bit, but also explains his licks and basically tells you how to get the sound. As much sh*t there is on CZcams these days, sometimes it's just amazing. 😃 This could not have been more precisely what I was looking for. Thanks for doing this, Guy! Over the past years I've come to realize that much of the music I love today would not be half of what it is without the incredibly talented session players who deserve way more credit. It's cool that they finally get some more exposure on CZcams.
Didn't know who this guy is. Then he started playing and I realized I know him most of my life. What a legend.
Much like Leland Sklar whose played on a billion songs. He is doing the same sort of video series, part stories and part jamming with records.
I think playing bass is better in the long run. Most people won't swarm you if you are successful in a hit band. You'll make the same amount of money, play bass lines for famous artists. But won't get bombarded like the singer or guitarist. Under the radar rich success.
Sorry to piggy back on this reply just to get my own message out. Thank you Guy. It has always been a pleasure to watch you play. I love your sound and your antics. Stay safe and healthy and never stop listening to your muse.
Yes, exactly he's been in the background on the radio all of my working like...
The bass in like a prayer is the reason I started playing. It’s just incredible, one of the best ever created. Thanks so much for the story and the music!
It’s amazing. And Guy doubling his bass line with a synth bass gives the low end such beautiful resonance.
And don’t get me started on his playing with PF.
Bravo, Guy!
I honestly think that 'like a prayer' has one of the greatest bass lines that no one talks about. Fantastic funk chops!
Indeed ..never realized til today. How wonderfully funky this is for a pop song
Knowing that he's sitting in (most likely) an empty room talking to his iphone, this guy is an amazing story teller...natural, free flowing delivery...and the wit only helps.
Leland Sklar is doing home bass sessions and story time too!
This lock-down is kinda great (and I'm not even a bass player!).

2 years later and I still keep coming back to this. Absolute genius.
it's been 4 for me. This video is how I realize how long ago COVID-19 was
This may be the coolest bass line I've ever heard. A stroke of genius you sometimes get only once in your lifetime.
lol.. "bloody pino, we all walk in his shadow... well he is very tall" - this guy is a riot
I have come back to this time and time again... as I bass player for over 30 yrs I can safely say you are witnessing history watching this :)
That's the best Madonna impression I've ever heard.
"Bloody Pino". 🎶Laughing my ass off...
@12:14 majestic. For 30 years I’ve wanted to know what was going on with Guy’s bass line. This is one of the tracks from my childhood that got me into bass playing. This and Icehouse’s truly epic “Don’t Believe Anymore”.
Sugarfoot Moffat on drums and Guy on bass in the studio together?!?! My goodness, they must have been pumping out some incredible melodies.
You would get melody from percussion if you were on piano, not drums. The melodies on Like A Prayer were all created by either Pat Leonard of Madonna or both. Stephen Bray was a drums/beat guy not so much melody or lyrics
it’s a privilege to have folks like Guy sharing their knowledge
Low-key one of the best bass lines in a pop song ever. So freaking good, and you're right! She really put it on the front and center of the track!
makes the song i think ,i cant think of many bass lines that kick in right near the end and make it a good song to an amazing song,,,it is without doubt the best bit in my opinion ,i love it x
Guy, don't know if you read the comments but if you do, I just showed this to my 7 year old and now he's dancing round the kitchen. Cheers!
"We're all in the shadow of Pino....well, he's bloody tall"! Love it! Good bass players are ten a penny, but a funny one is worth their weight in gold.
Guy is funny AF, I know what he means, I bumped into Pino walking out of a store in NYC once...Im six foot and he was a GIANT!
@@unofficiallysteele2633 I'd love to see Guy and Steve Lukather on stage bantering. Both are funny as HELL!!!
Mick Karn could be very funny. I'd recommend his autobiography; Japan and self existence.
Honestly, Guy has performed as a stand-up comedian. I couldn't tell you the exact years, perhaps he still performs when time allows? But I do know he was very well received. He's always been a good storyteller with a fantastic sense of humor.
I love this!!! The passing comment at 15:03 "...if I learnt to read music...I should have made notes..."! I love that the practice comes before the theory. Often, bass players are the lowest in the pecking order (which is fine) but when you get a head banging ripper like this, people don't know who to attribute this to--it's the groove in the bass!! Hands down one of my favourite videos exploring the reality of the music industry and (Guy) your down-to-earth nature demonstrates that we don't need to know all of our stuff (musically) to bring joy to the masses through music. Top stuff!
Guy is an amazing player and a looks a great person too. He should be someone who we can spend several hours talking about music and life without being boring. Long life to the master
I just wanna say, your bass style compliments the PULSE concert beyond my comprehension. Before watching the PULSE re mastered videos, I could not have imagined those tracks to have gotten better, yet they did. your bass style fits with Floyd like a key unlocks a door.
That really made my day. When i listen to Like a prayer i always focus on the bass.
Between "Sorrow", "One Slip" & "like a Prayer", this bass is eargasm-inducing
I listened to this song all the time when it came out and always thought that bass was done on a synth,a DX7 or Jupiter 8. I only discovered this video recently and was blown away to see Guy does it on bass. Ive been a musician for 43 years (Keyboards and Synths),been in many bands during the 80s with some brilliant bassists, the bass in this is the best ive heard and as musician im even more blown away by this.
Guy love your playing over the years. Floyd, Jackson Madonna, Palmer etc. Yes I read your book. I actually use Like a Prayer (and other Madonna songs you played on) as an example for my daughters of normal/nice people can do amazing things. Keep doing what you do.
Like a Prayer is truly one of the great pop songs. Timeless due to the sort of brilliant musicianship and talent on display here. This baseline just flows so effortlessly. That crescendo when it goes into back into major key is just 👌
I was liking you, now I LOVE you. Even more. That "Like a Prayer" work is legendary. Great man, great player, great musician, great heart, great human. Thank you for being with us.
Guy there’s a wonderful bit during Sorrow at Pompeii when David is ripping his solo and the camera cuts to you and you’re clearly having an absolute blast, you have a huge beaming smile on your face, what a dream to be in....
David Gilmour has this look, like a dad indulging a wayward son: "Oh, Guy's off on a funky escapade again... I'll have a word later."
Unreal. Thanks so much for the Sorrow line. You played the fill and I yelled “I had it right!”, and my wife said what are you yelling about??? She didn’t understand my excitement.
Now I have to go work on Like A Prayer.
I keep watching this over and over... Guy just looks like he is having a great time playing and he has an infectious attitude. Great video, the man is so humble and so talented!!
Wow 🔥🔥🔥 that bass part is so iconic and hooky!
That bass playing is insane. Oh God that's good. It's like watching a spider line dancing on ecstasy. Superb, Sir. Absolutely superb.
A great song and great bass playing. I´ve always loved this song.
Guy is such a pro. Always refer to his playing as "lead bass". Outstanding.
Thank you Guy... You played That Riff off Sorrow, Sorrow is my favroute Floyd Song and that riff off the Live show always blew me away ,, and you just made my day showing how you did it :-)
Like a pint with this guy . Great stories , wonderful player. Down to earth . Thumbs.
So glad to have stumbled upon this superb gentleman bassist when I came across him playing his Murder On The Dance Floor (a song I love) bass line. Really appreciate your music and warm personality.
"What Do You Want From Me" - my favorite bass riff, Mr. Pratt, lovely sound, really!!!
Guy, thank you for these clips. They’re a great mix of anecdote and music. And your cheerful, happy positivity is just what we need. Thank you.
This is such a generous gift to the bassist community from one of its heroes. Also, I need a Spector 😆
I remember half listening to "like a prayer" on the radio one day and then suddenly having the realization that the band were absolutely on fire. Great work Guy.
Ahaha same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago and then found this video!
I'm not even a bass player but find these and the stories amazing, it's addictive viewing Nick
Thanks for doing these videos! I hadn’t realized how brilliant the bass line is on like a prayer, but now I do. It’s so much fun listening to the creative part of how you make these bass lines and see you play them through. Great stuff!
Brilliant, thanks for being so funny and sharing all these great stories!
Guy you make these videos so entertaining, i never realised the bass was so intense in this track , the 80's were pure rock for me , but as I've got older , ive listened to more 80's pop ,discovering there were some cracking bass lines , this had passed me by ......until now
Guy, it’s incredible musicians like yourself that create such memorable riffs that will never be forgotten - a great song and exemplary bass! - thank you for sharing. Just magical.
Thank you so much for these. They are fabulous!! Very funny and warm. Huge smile and lots of giggles watching them - and a load of great parts to learn from! Thanks so much. Keep safe and well.
This has always been one of my favourite bits of bass playing - the octaver blows my mind - and to see it here like this is incredible. Thank you!
Thoroughly entertaining and thoroughly informative.
Thanks for taking the time to do the videos Guy. Big thanks from South 🏴
Thank you so much for posting this video! I finally noticed this bass line in the mid-'90s and couldn't get over it. I always thought it was Randy Jackson but started to realize it could be you a few years ago. The Distraction Club video confirmed it for me and this video couldn't be more perfect. I'm looking forward to finally playing it with all the correct details!
This was so joyful to watch. I could listen to you playing and telling your stories all day.
Mr. Pratt these videos are so great. Thanks for taking the time to do this and giving your insights to your amazing lines. You would make a great neighbor!
So many great riffs going on here!! Thank you for them all, especially Tear your Playhouse Down- are you kidding me???!?!!
Loved this bass line ever since the song was released, just love the was it unleashes. Never knew who played it and now I do. Top guy, will be looking into your career , watching more videos and listening to more tracks you’ve played on. Much much respect, can’t imagine how you can create such things.... amazing!
Thank you so much guy! I always get flashed when I hear that sorrow fill!
Still hope for a full lesson.
Stay safe!
Really enjoyed that insight of Like A Prayer, I could watch you talk through your experience all day :-)
I've been playing bass since I was 15. The first song I learned taking lessons was "don't you want somebody to love" by Jefferson airplane. My teacher told me that if I could play that song, then I could be a real bass player. But I here guy Pratt play and know now he was lying lol
I listened a gazillion times to this song (one of my absolute favourites) since I was a boy. It was always clear to me that it lives by the base, which I enjoy so much. I was quite sure that no one could have played this live on an instrument and that it was programmed on a sampler - so wrong! The beefy sound, the rhythm that makes my feet wanna dance, that harmony and melody... Thank you for contributing this wondorful part to this song, and for doing a video showing (that it is real :-) ) and how it is done!
What a legend. Thanks for sharing the licks and chat - a great distraction and inspiring as hell.
This was wonderful and inspiring, Guy - thank you! Plus I adore the live video of you on the old Tube music show playing 'Hey Little Girl' with Icehouse- I used to listen it to every morning before work started in order to pep me up for the day. That was back when going to work was a thing.
Guy, you're my favorite bass player and all around cool guy, and I absolutely loved your book. I have a picture of you playing bass in my "man-cave" - in my hall of fame. Thanks for doing this, it's a lot of fun! I'd love to have a regular "Guy Pratt show"... basically the recorded version of your standup routine. Thanks for doing these! Looking forward to hearing/watching/sloppily attempting to play along with/ more of these!
That was in late 90's. Me ,my parent's Opel Kadett, and Madonna's "Like a Prayer" in cassete player. Played again and again. I loved that bass line! Until today, i didn't know that Guy played it! I'm totally shocked. Best wishes!
I could honestly listen to Guy chat all day and never get bored for a second. A guy that’s been there and done it at the highest levels. So many musicians that have their heads in the clouds couldn’t string this man’s bass! Thanks so so much for doing these videos guy. You’re the best.
Thank you Guy. When I was growing up (born in '68), there were certain songs that stood out to me, like this one, like Talk Talk's It's My Life. I didn't know why until I took up playing the bass in my 40s.
NOW I know why I loved those songs.
“Amuse-bouche”? “The Ronnie Corbett Of The Bass”? This was pure GOLD, Guy. GOLD, I TELLS YA! Truly entertaining and informative, as always. Thanks for this. Glad you got your Spector back, too.
I bought every single Madonna released up to & including coincidentally ‘Like a Prayer’. I had no idea you played on it. I’m coming out of lockdown knowing more than when I went in. Love your work.
Listend to this song today on continuous repeat through Nuraphone headphones picking out every single detail. Kind of like a tissue moment ❤❤❤🇬🇧
One of my all time favorite songs and bass lines. Thank you so much for doing this!
I had no idea you played on this album. IMO, Madonna’s best, it is tremendous, and you and Sugarfoot are amazing on it.
That makes me smile so much!!
Highly enjoyable. Thank you for doing this. Great bass line. Great stories.
So cool. Thank you for the diversion from the lockdown. That was very awesome! And that beautiful Spector. Why play anything else. I LOVE how all these artists are coming out and giving us inside stories and playing tips in this time. God bless you Sir!
Brilliant! Great bassline! Ta very much for putting these clips together.
Guy, this is truly wonderful to see. When I hear a big/famous musician say, 'Yeah I can't read music', it's one of the most satisfying things a musician could perhaps hear. This is not me saying being able to read is a bad thing. It is a positive thing. But a lot of people can read and they never take it anywhere. They learn an instrument when they are young and they get sick of it by the time they get out of their teens and just give up. For me that says, they didn't have the basic drive and fire to have what it actually takes to take music on and were just doing it because they felt they had to to please parents and that it was 'academically acceptable'. This is my gripe with reading music. I've been a musician for over 20 years now but I've learnt there's a lot more to it. You've got to have something else to drag you along and keep you within the musician world. I think I've always felt a sense of arrogance with musicians who can read and because you can't, they do look down on you. I studied music at uni and it was there, even some of the tutors had it. But I can guarantee, that out of all those people I went to uni with, I am one of the few still doing music stuff. That's the difference. It's a fun journey to discover! Those bass fills man! Just out of curiosity but what time signature is Oh Father played in Guy? It seems confusing and deceiving as the chorus seems to be differentfrom the verses?
I believe Oh Father is 6/8 throughout - it’s just played with a different feel in the chorus.
Such a joy!! You're an absolute hero for me since you've been playing on Delicate Sound Of Thunder. You express so much fun whilst playing there (also visually), exactly as you do here! I have to admit that I never realized that it's been you on Like A Prayer and Earth Song. Not because of your playing or sound, that IS your unique style of course, but because I never "matched" the idea because of the differences in genres ... and artists. and that it even though I've always been actively listening to these bass lines. Feels like a crazy aha moment now.
Highlight of my day, great insight and love the little anecdotes. Keep them coming Guy.
Not big on leaving comments, but I had to break the habit and post. Mate, you have made me very happy watching you having fun. You're a joy and thanks for letting us share in your serious skills.
It's great at 12:19 where the low down vibes vibrate what seems to be a highlighter pen off the table behind him...
Thx Man for such legendary music and performances. Pulse my favorite of all time ❤❤❤
I would follow this blog just for sense of humour alone. I would study this just for the excellent bass playing and guides to many of the songs of my life. I would follow this just for the great anecdotes. All three combined and more to make a truly great experience. Legendary. Thanks for your candour, your humility and generosity. 10/10
From a drummer in Cleveland....Thank you.thank you and thank you..Your playing is what makes me love drumming. And you played with Porcaro, which jettisoned you into the stratosphere of bad assery....Peace love and groove.....Denny
"The Ronnie Corbett of bass players" LOL
Guy, I have the identical Spector. Same color and everything. Got it in 1988. Absolutely love it. I put many miles on it.
Guy Im a recent convert to bass from guitar of 45 years and Im loving and learning soooo much from these videos thank you sooooo much sir you absolute legend!!
I love this dude. I wish I had gone to see “Saucer Full of Secrets” because you are fantastic! Love 💕from Boston 😎
Ok - I need to go and watch this now. Guy you are a legend, thank you for doing this.
Thats great - I had been playing it higher up so its good to hear how you get the articulation out of the low end - really enjoy all the fills and happy to say I had nailed at least 3 of the buggers! Love the Madonna impression. Was taken by wife to see her in London at the start of Feb (pre corona I hope) and was hoping you would have come on for an impromtu Like a Prayer bass riff - sort of flying Mark King type appearance.
That little fill is a perfect example of why I fell in love with bass playing. Peak bass playing is when you get someone like Guy who can hold a groove but then just 'feels' where there's a place in the song for a little fill like this. Beautiful.
Hey Guy, I'm really enjoying this series.
Also "my bass and other animals" is a great read 👏👏👏
Even with an Octave pedal inline you can still hear that's a Spector😎
I don't listen to much Madonna but when I heard the band on this track it really was a standout moment.
If I threw a party he would be a must have guest. Guy exudes a fun wit and likeability that is gold. Love listening to his stories and bass playing is beyond extraordinary. Keep these videos coming they are a joy in these times.
Awesome! Thanks again for this Guy!
Your work alone with the late great Gilbert makes you a "house god" in my book!
Keep up the good work.
Loving it Guy. You're a natural at this CZcams malarkey.
Don’t stop playing bass professionally of course, but also don’t stop doing these videos when you are freed into the open world. Good stuff, and I am not even a bass player!
Always a pleasure to see you sir! On the subject of octave pedals, my '87 Black Label OC-2 is my pride and joy.
what a great song. One of the best singles ever and the bassline delivers too!
You’re just brilliant. Count me as a fan. So there.
Well I didn’t no you played on like a prayer wow. Have watched and listened to for many yrs with floyd and David Gilmore and always admired your bass playing. As a semi professional drummer for over 30 yrs I have played with some good bass players over the yrs none in your class I may add but always thought what a great rhythm section you make along with nick and Steve. Really enjoying the videos. Cheers
That's just outstanding isn't it? What a laid-back, charismatic dude too. As good a bass line as you're likely to hear. One of the best.
So entertaining. You have such an easy engaging way. What a delight to watch. Thanks for keeping our spirits up Mr P! Working through this pandemic so just catching up now but your posts are so easy to watch and just fantastic!
Plays bass for one of the most iconic songs of the 20th century. Can’t remember doing it… Legend.
