Mulholland Drive is amazing.
I have some Kino and Criterion, but not very much.
My Kino collection consists of three Mel Brooks movies on Blu-ray: “The Producers”, “Spaceballs”, and “Life Stinks”. My Criterion collection consists of two Terry Gilliam movies: “Brazil” (DVD box set), and “Time Bandits” (laserdisc).
Fun fact: the Criterion Collection originally started out on laserdisc.
Kenny you haven’t seen Elephant Man yet, wow. Now that’s a classic in my opinion…
The Irishman is great. Uncut Gems is good as well.
Love Miller's Crossing! + On the Waterfront!
Here are some thoughts on titles you may want to consider in July or in subsequent Criterion sales.
- Inside Llewyn Davis. It's one of my favorite Coen Brothers' films. It's quite different from their best-known films but I think it really works.
- Tokyo Story and/or Late Spring. If you decide you like Good Morning, you should definitely follow up with Yasujiro Ozu's two classic films. I actually like Ozu more than Akira Kurosawa (although they're both great).
- House. Never mind Videodrome - if you want to see a horror film that's really wild, you should try the Japanese film, House. There's no way to describe it - you just have to see it. 😀
The Irish man is an amazing perfectly acted movie and hope you like it better on the re watch lol.
Okay, forget everything and just go watch Seven Samurai. Get your wife, get some snacks, put your feet up, take the intermission break, and then watch the other half. Don't put it off.
I think you'll like 'The Elephant Man', it's probable one of David Lynch's most linear films (along with 'The Straight Story'). Very moving, great prosthetic make-up, sets, costumes, acting and exceptional black & white cinematography. Trust me on this one Ken. Also, for Nicholas Cage month watch 'Adaptation, very witty and funny he plays twins very believably (should have won an Oscar for it), 'Matchstick Men' (another great character piece) and 'Lord of War' (especially with all this news about gun control). Those are my picks. Enjoy!
Alot of great movies. alot I haven't seen as well. I had to do a double take when you showed buried alive. happy watching! 😬😳😁
Since you liked Bringing Up Baby, I suggest The Philadelphia Story from Criterion. Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn paired again with James Stewart. The most Hitchcock film not Hitchcock is Charade from Criterion. Stars Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Walter Matthau, James Coburn. Classic Cary Grant Comedy from Criterion His Girl Friday. I am surprised by you movie tastes you don't have Repulsion. Psychological Thriller starring Catherine Deneuve and directed by Roman Polanski. I think you have said you have watched this, but in case you haven't, The Game is a must watch. Then there is cinema history Bruce Lee. The Criterion collection of his films should be part of any collection.
Now for Warner Archive. Since I am a Cary Grant fan, check out Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House. You have said in the past liking Michael J Fox movies. I suggest Doc Hollywood. Then there is Pump Up the Volume. A Christian Slater starring movie I think is underrated.
Kino, upgrade your DVD of Secret of My Success. Kim Bassinger and Val Kilmer starring in The Real McCoy. No Man’s Land starring Charlie Sheen. Billy Bathgate starring Dustin Hoffman and Nicole Kidman. Broken Flowers starring Bill Murray surprised me how much I enjoyed that.
Wait Until Dark is great too. The Train is one of my favorite War movies, got the Kino with slip
Heads up Best Buy has a pretty good sale going ATM. Quite a few 4ks for $9.99 and a bunch more in the $12 range
If you liked bringing up baby, I think you should get Mr blandings builds his dream house. Its the money pit with cary grant
Man I want the criterion of Rosemarys Baby even though I have the Blu ray of it. Wish it wasn’t out of print.
I am surprised you don't have Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Criterion one of my favorites also Inside Llewyn Davis I liked and The Game is one of my favorite Criterion s
I think you should have an ancient movies month do 1920s and 1930s together
I'd love both a 20s month and a Bava month
Bitter Moon & Black Moon Rising are 2 good ones i got from the sale as well
A 20s month would be great, I love me some 20s silent films
Hell yes to Night School & Innocent Blood! Saw IB in the theater back then (Don Rickles?!!LOL/awesome)
and NS on cable around 83 or so. Happy Birthday to Me is another great slasher, one of my favs.
WILD AT HEART is Lynch's best movie.
Keep going with Criterions I have 763 now but I’m a Criterion nut it’s the main focus for my channel. NOTLD is a great first choice.
Hi Ken, you have really good movies! Seven Samurai, 12 Angry Men, Come and See, Notorious, The Apartment, The Lady Vanishes, and so on. But you should really watch this great movies. I hope you will watch this movies soon. There all in every top list i know.
I laughed at "Hard Way," because I just came home with a vhs tape of that and I said to myself "i've never seen that on disc before." Also have a tape of Innocent Blood, thought it was a decent watch. The sean connery title was interesting - I try to collect actors associated with the james bond series - a good example is "Defiance" with Daniel craig.
Great collection. There's so much here I'll have to post more than one comment. 😁
Regarding films to watch, you should put The Apartment at the top of the list. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
I second the vote for the Elephant Man, which was directed by David Lynch but had three people involved in the screenplay. It's Lynch's most accessible movie and has a more straightforward story than Blue Velvet.
Regarding the Tarkovsky films, I love Mirror but it's not the film to start with. Your first Tarkovsky film should definitely be Solaris.
Ken, you should do another Hitchcock month.
The Hard Way was great , need to get The Good Son on blu
Still need to get Night School & From Beyond the Grave blu upgrades. The latter is a good anthology.
I have Innocent Blood blu & dvd. Used to have the VHS when tapes were all you had really, never got into Laserdisc
Sold 99% of my tapes to go to dvd
One final comment - about Videodrome. I'm old enough to remember the adult movies that ran locally in Toronto and were the basis for the tapes James Woods was pursuing in Videodrome.
Let's just say Cronenberg definitely took some creative liberties. From what I recall, the actual films were less explicit than that scene in Don't Look Now. 😁
Those are some really good classic horror films Ken very cool movies 🆒👍
got lucky and won a copy of the Apartment in a contest, it arrived last week.
I am not the biggest Criterion collector but the ones I have are incredible if not a little pricey.
you gotta flip that Spaced Invaders artwork.... the back looks more like the vhs rental cover art from back in the day
Some girls want the body of Megan Fox, some guys want the body of Arnold Schwarzenegger, I on the other hand just want a collection like Ken.
😂😂😂...#moviesbyKen
See ELEPHANT MAN..it is not a typical David Lynch film. produced by Mel Brooks. You will be surprised how great it is...and I am NOT a Lynch film who, it seems to me, is mostly weird just to be weird. He also made a film called THE STRAIGHT STORY. Quirky, but all a true story and really good..if you can find it. Aside from that, I agree about Lynch.
I like 20s month would be awesome. Actually I think you should just go with Silent Film month.
I would enjoy it!
You definitely need to do a video with your partner looking at all the blurays 4ks you haven't opened yet lol.
Peace Andy H
I found that Malignant 4k slipcover you got recently. How would you rate the quality of the actual slipcover not the artwork, about an average studio release or better like an Arrow or even Vinegar Syndrome release?
Charlton Heston was in another Last Man on Earth/I Am Legend remake called The Omega Man.
I see your not much of a David Lynch fan.
DO THE RIGHT THING was his third film, after SCHOOL DAZE.
Criterion The Bruce Lee Collection and Jackie Chan Police Story movies
Definitely need to snatch those for a Kung Fu month!
If you didn't like Lost Highway, Mulholland Dr. or Blue Velvet then you're just not into David Lynch and that's ok.
Finally someone else who doesn’t care for Mulholland Dr 😅 watched it years ago and could not get into it.
Fire birds is one of those so bad it's good movies
Can't wait!
100's of dollars of unwatched flics... I have the same problem.... we could start our own AA type group....
Instead of 20s, why not a silent film month, like WINGS, THE BIG PARADE, THE BLACK PIRATE, etc...although silent film watching is a totally different experience.
Maybe? I want to watch Nosfaratu and Metropolis though. Since I already have those in the collection
You're missing out on Lynch, but I guess he's not everyone's style.
I'll be watching and reviewing Wild At Heart soon, so we'll see if he grabs me.
Always found NOTLD to be boring and wayyyy overrated.
A little bit yeah. Lol
