    Ordering "Lady From Shanghai " today. Great companion piece to "Touch Of Evil", my 2d favorite noir.

      Another great one. If someone's looking for an Orson Welles noir triple feature, I'd say add The Stranger! Interestingly, all three are on Blu from Kino Lorber.

    Yes, talk like we're at the video store. I worked at one back in the day, actually I worked at three different stores over the years, Blockbuster being the worst. Finding out what the customer likes, so you can recommend another title the next time they come in was great.
    Thank you again for showing us the titles.

    Check your Kino discs. I bought 7 4ks recently from them and 5 were scratched up brand new. Same for SF.

    I saw Death Wish 2 a bunch of times on cable as I was growing up. It's so over the top, and very CANNON. I didn't see the original Death Wish until I was in my twenties. I was so surprised at how different it was. It's under the top? It's a much more serious film, and I'm glad we have both. It's sort of like Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2. They are essentially the same story, only one is batshit, and the other is super-batshit.
    On another note, a while back you talked about Stanley Kubrick's THE KILLING. Based on your review (And the Kubrick factor) I ordered it. Last weekend I finally watched it, and thought it was amazing. I had never heard of it before, and wouldn't shut up about it for the rest of the weekend. Thanks for the heads up on that release.

      Nice, I'm glad you enjoyed The Killing. Death Wish is such a potent, realistic look at that subject matter. Some movies capture their time so perfectly that they can practically define their eras, and I think Death Wish does that.

    The Aphyx is about capturing the spirit of the dead. It could be the precursor to Ghostbusters. It's more suspense/thriller than horror but I like it. I have the Venezuelan VHS as El Espiritu De La Muerte. The movie has always been sort of obscure and hard to find. Neat haul good showing and cool video Heath!👉😃👈

    Once again I love your videos. I do have a question though. How do you find the time for commentary’s? I mean if a disc has 3 commentary’s, do you listen to them all? I still work full time, so wanting to see and listen to all the special features a disc might have requires a lot of time management. Just curious how you manage it. Once again thanks for all you do.

      I'll never be able to check it all out, so I just do my best. Most of the time, it depends on the movie and my level of interest, but also how much time I have, which admittedly isn't much.

  • @samuelstephens6163
    @samuelstephens6163 Před rokem +1

    At this point Noir means: black and white movies, gangster and crime films of the classic eras, classic melodramas, spy films, postwar films, caper and heist films, gothic thrillers and gothic westerns, psychological thrillers. What's happened to Noir as a genre is the same thing that's happened to the proper Adventure genre film---the meaning has been stretched and broken up until you need just a very little flavor to invoke it. I'm not necessarily saying there's a definite boxed-in definition, like sonata form, but part of the origins in pulp novels (The Testament of Dr. Mabuse, e.g.) show a more definite genre, and I think it's worth standing back and looking the beginnings of a genre so influential. And maybe don't make fun of French critics? They gave us the name of the genre and loved American cinema as much as we do.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  Před rokem

      This is exactly the kind of comment I'm talking about in the video.

      @@CerealAtMidnight No snark here--but what is it exactly that you have an issue with? Genuinely curious to have your comprehensive thoughts. Because it seems like you're annoyed at gatekeeping, and although you love Noir you're simultaneously annoyed by the French angle that not only created the term, but influenced later 50s filmmakers in the genre who then used it more self-consciously. For my part, I'm happy to include many fillms under a genre, but there comes a point when the term loses its punch if used to describe almost anything.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  Před rokem

      I'm not annoyed. It's simply a pattern that continues to repeat itself over and over again. If I say "noir" on my channel, someone is going to show up and pontificate about what noir is and what it isn't. Nobody does this for horror, action movies, or drama. They don't do it for comedy or westerns. It's unique to noir. These people often quote books, academics, and esoteric film critics and say things like "if you really want to know the truth of noir, you must read such and such. Only then can you understand." Well, I've read the books. I've taken courses on the subject and film history is probably the single most important thing to me...and after it all, I think film is meant to be shared and enjoyed. I love film. I study it, and I've dedicated years of my life to it (I'm not just a CZcams channel). But film is meant to bring us together, not drive us apart. Almost all of the time, noir conversation in the comments of my videos isn't about coming together, it's about guarding the genre.

      @samuelstephens6163 Před rokem +1

      @@CerealAtMidnight Either they're really vicious (in which case I'm happy to take your word for it), or you're missing an opportunity for a Film Noir Club? It's the internet and people like flexing their film knowledge. But again, maybe they're just really beyond the pale.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  Před rokem

      Maybe all three! I think film noir intimidates people because there's so much academia surrounding it, so when people find themselves connecting with the movies, they want to seem like they belong and are part of the group. Tribalism, in a way. Like when someone likes a band but feels the need to question the credibility of everyone they see wearing a t-shirt of that band (I'm embarrassed to say I've done this).

    I have an earlier Blu of LADY FROM SHANGHAI, but, if this one has extras, I have a feeling that an upgrade is in order.
    Sandahl Bergman ... my original memories of her are as a dancer; she was in A CHORUS LINE on Broadway, and I first saw her, in the movies, as a featured dancer in Bob Fosse's ALL THAT JAZZ. PROGRAMMED TO KILL looks like one of her post-CONAN movies; I seem to recall seeing it in video rentals, back in Days of Yore, prior to Blockbuster video. Didn't know that Robert Ginty was in it, though I know he did a lot of movies of this type, at the time; one of them showed up on Mystery Science Theatre 3000 (they referred to his character as "The Paper Chase guy").

  • @brads2362
    @brads2362 Před rokem

    I too can't wait for Lady from Shanghai! And I would definitely consider it a film noir. It's kind of an insane (in a great way) one, so I wonder if Welles was doing a bit of a parody on the crime films of the day that later became known as noirs.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  Před rokem +1

      The more I dig into Welles as a personality, the more I think he brought an element of subversion to everything he did. I'd say it's very possible that he was doing a bit of parody.

    Heath, thanks for the tidbit regarding Maigret. S1 was on my want list but, as you mentioned with The Avengers early seasons, these are only available as kinoscopes (not OCNs) and are disappointing visually. I'm presently enjoying The Avengers S4 that are from 35mm B&W OCNs and they look fabulous. Takes me right back to my childhood in the UK. Cheers!

    Apologies because I imagine this question may have been answered before but why doesn't Kino Lorber include digital copies with their 4K releases? Is it a licensing thing?

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  Před rokem +1

      Yes, it's licensing. Kino Lorber is able to license films from their parent companies, but streaming rights for those same studio movies almost always resides with those parent companies. If they could, they would. I can't think of a single boutique label that is also granted digital rights.

    I like Kino, but they have such a massive catalog its almost impossible to find anything unless you're looking for specific titles. Their sales are just endless scrolls. I think they need to think about curating their content a little better.

    • @BigBossSquirtle
      @BigBossSquirtle Před rokem

      That's kinda the point of a boutique label. To curate to the lesser known films that otherwise wouldn't get released.
      And besides, they're already kinda doing that with their 4K releases since they'll mostly do those for films that will most likely sell well.

  • @willnoiles2001

    That 'No Mercy' release is just a tiny step above Mill Creek's bare bones release. An interview with a supporting actor isn't exactly adding a lot to this release. Could they not get an interview with one of the leads or director, for example. Heck, even a commentary with a film expert would have been added something slightly substantial to this release. Collectors are probably better off sticking with the Mill Creek version, if they already have it...

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  Před rokem +1

      If they could have gotten interviews with others involved, they certainly would have. This release will also have better encoding than the Mill Creek release.
