- A fire broke out at a fire station in Huntington Park early Wednesday morning.
Crews responded to a second-alarm structure fire at Fire Station 164, at 6301 Santa Fe Avenue, around 4 a.m., according to Fred Fielding, spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Video captured by KTLA shows firefighters - some in street clothes - mopping up the mess in the aftermath of the fire; additional footage posted to the Citizen App shows crews on the roof of an adjacent building battling the blaze.
KTLA's Mary Beth McDade reports on May 1, 2024.

Fire dept.: always make sure to have fire alarms work
also Fire dept: Left the chat
The older stations don't have alarms in that area of the station! Hire the guy who saved them!
I am a fire alarm technician with over thirty years experience and I have yet to do testing at a fire station where the alarm panel hasn’t been neglected. One I did was completely down and had been for at least 6 months. When I asked if they had a fire watch the captain looked at me and said no we don’t have the time nor money to do that and yet they will red tag buildings for not having a working fire alarm
$15 dollar smoke alarm would have saved a million. Not to mention possibility of loss of life
MILLIONS. Probably like at least 5 million and if station is a write off, more like 15 million at least.
Only in LA would their fire stations not have fire alarms. Wow, can't even make this up.
That's worse than a police station getting broken into
I lived in Washington, and within about two weeks of each other, the Local PD had a patrol car stolen as an officer went inside a night club to respond to a fight, and a fire station had a small fire (due to ground power) that only damaged an electrical line and slight damage to a fire truck.
Well, isn’t THAT ironic.
This is the most bogus story EVER! What a whopper of a story.
That Fire Station 164 apparatuses will have to be replaced by this year, next year, or coming other years.
No fire alarms IN A FIREHOUSE of all places .. can hardly think of anything more ridiculous
There are smoke alarms in the living areas, not in app. Bay do to exhaust from rigs
@@user-bx8qk7dn3iheat detectors are designed to overcome that environment
They do not put them in the actual bays as exhaust fumes would set them off.
Nevermind the guys there, imagine youre at a different firehouse, passed out sleeping, hopefully for the night. All of a sudden you get woke up to the sound of a call, a fire with the address being the next fire house over. That would be wild. Glad noone was hurt
Ped 1: CALL 911!!! SOMEBODY CALL 911!!!!
Ped 2: THIS IS 911!!!
No fire sprinkler system?
As an European, I can't understand why the station wasn't updated with fire alarms downstairs... In Europe even older stations have to be "upgraded" - it's mandatory over here...
Imagine other fire stations get the call at 4 am. "Is this a prank call?!"
Gracias Señor 🙏
Who do you call when the fire station is on fire? 🤔
Mr. Humble Man!
Bob the builder
The Mayor!Time to get some funds for a new building!
A very similar fire happened at Orange County Fire Authority station 61 in Buena Park a few years back
Yep, almost identical situation.
R u freaking serious it's destroyed not heavily damaged!
You definitely right just look at the fire damage and smoke damage that entire station has to be torn down and built back up from scratch.
I get it, no smoke detectors as fumes from truck engines running inside the building as they are leaving or backing into the bay.
Then use InfraRed or UV Flame Detectors.
@@Neojhunagree. The technology exists for hostile environments like this.
I would have guessed the smoke detectors would have woke them up.
Same thing happened in Buena Park a few years back.
yep...and it happened many years ago at another LA county station in rowland heights....station 145..
When the trucks are parked there's a lot of chargers with lithium ion batteries recharging could be possible that the batteries went up and took everything else with them
Reminds me of king of the hill episode
How the hell does the fire department 🚒 burn 🔥
How the hell did that happen ? Arsonist?
...likely Fire Truck caused it from all appearances...Arson....no...but that make a Great Movie...
They did mention it being an old building - probably something faulty.
@@stuzworldzWell, we got ourselves an expert in the chat, how exciting. Thank you for clearing it up, case closed.
Thanks to passerby..❤
my guess is it started in a fire engine or truck.....it happened to me when I was a fireman, but we woke up and put the fire out before it spread...but, who knows until an investigation is completed.
That fire fire department me was built in the late 50’s or early 60’s.
Was it a battery fire on the new EV fire trucks?
No I live very close to my house like 23 steps and you see it what caused it is someone threw cocktail or a motolov my uncle said he heard glass shattering people said a bømb started it
It happens
@@anthonysaggio6551 this has never happened in hp
Look at the first shot. It was a Diesel engine. Look at the grill.
no fire alarms???
Look as a trained U.S. Navy Firefighter, those guys are NEVER GOING TO LIVE THIS ONE DOWN! Their own station burned down, ouch.😣😣😣
This is sad😔😢😭Almighty GOD Bless and protect firefighters 🚒
Prayers to my brother and sister firefighters
How does a fire department not have multiple fire/smoke alarms in the apparatus bay 🤦🏼♂️
It's an old building, older structures aren't equipped with fire protection systems in the apparatus area.
Don’t they require older civilian buildings to be up to code ?
@rd8370 nope, that all depends on where you live some cities require it but others don't and residential homes don't require anything besides a smoke alarm on each level of the house and many fire departments are older especially volunteer departments and they're not able to be upgraded due to funding and how old the structures are , in order to modernize a fire system the electrical wiring would need to be installed in all of the walls or ceilings which costs a lot of money which is difficult for many departments to get because they're not funded by their city government much of what many fire departments get in way of gear or other necessities is donated generously by residents that live in the community or businesses that help care for the people that keep them safe.
@@josephbennett3482 you don't need to have fire protection systems installed. It says they didn't even have smoke detectors in the Bays. They could have ordered them off Amazon and put them on the ceiling themselves. 🤷♂️
@eriksand9262 fire stations are classified as Type B buildings, which mean that they are public buildings in which the general public can be inside of and go to so they're required to have wired fire protection systems in which someone can activate the alarm by pull station or the alarm would activate on it's own and send a signal to the 911 dispatch center of an alarm activation , that station technically wasn't up to code since they didn't have alarms in a location where there's vehicles filled with flammable fuel and is a place where civilians would visit during daylight hours or if the bay doors would be open the alarm could be activated by a passers-by if there isn't anyone in sight.
It was dale gribble.
"L.A., Engine 51. We have a two-story fire station fully involved. Send me a second and third alarm."
The fire truck caught on fire
@CRIZG probably a lithium ion tool battery went into Thermo run away and caught the other equipment on fire and the truck too
Remember kids. Always have fire alarms! Don’t do what we do!
How it could be Fire Station is on Fire Holly Molly.? Thanks our heroes are safe.
This is crazy yo
Most likely one of the rigs started the fire , wiring issue
how did it happen?
WTF??? reminds me of the movie "ROXANNE" where this happens and the cheif played by Steve Martin says "Goddammit, were supposed to put them out!!!!"
Wow!
I'm surprised there aren't heat detectors in the engine bay.
Also rather curious what started it. Maybe there was a cheaper LiPo battery that failed somewhere, but typically nothing rated for heat has those batteries in it (radios, flashlights, pagers, etc.).
So glad these firefighters were safe.
No detector/alarms or sprinklers in the station - certainly not good stewardship of public resources.
The city government holds the purse strings. The fire department always gets the brown end of the stick.
Dispatch: so do i mark you on scene or...
I guess if you're the fire department who needs smoke alarms.......
I feel like it’s only possible for a fire station to burn down in SoCal
It's kinda funny how ironic that is. Who knew the name fire station would apply so well.
The irony.
DEF vehicle exhaust or electric short in the truck s
So a fire station does not have fire alarms where their vehicles are? Only in America....
I think that Fire Station 164 will have to replace the new Engine, Quint, Squad, and Battalion.
Tell us about the electric vehicle parked inside and charging.
Was it an Electric fire engine
There is a significant number of new fire trucks with digital controls and computers that are spontaneously combusting. It strikes me that more people should be concerned about that.
Put foam on it.
They are OK with spending money for a investigation but not installing smoke alarms and sprinklers? Checks out
Chet Elderson and his dang beer sign
DRAKE BELL: Procrastinator, the fire station’s on fire!
PROCRASTINATOR: That’s terrible! I’ll rescue them … EVENTUALLY!
Sorry, this reminded me of the Amanda Show.
CA: you don't need guns to protect yourself because we have police, just like you rely on the fire department to protect you from a house fire while you are asleep.
Also CA: our fire departments cannot protect themselves from a fire while they are asleep.
Moral of the story: don't rely on the government to protect you when they need a good Samaritan to protect themselves.
Good samaritan passing by....."WTF???????"
Their new EV fire engine??
LA county doesn’t have one. That is the City of LA that had one.
LAFD Engine 82, as I recall.
Squad 51 station from the show, Emergency?
No that County 127 in Carson
"The home of 'The Show'."
I thought it kind of looked like the fire station used in the pilot episode. It was two stories with three bays like this one. The opening scene everyone is upstairs asleep, the callout tones go off everyone jumps into their turnout gear, slide down the pole, and roar off to a paint factory fire.
@@richardhiskett5422 Naw, it was supposedly Station 10. This was 164's that was destroyed. A bunch of metropolitan stations are designed that way.
@@richardhiskett5422 no that one is station 8 West Hollywood (LACoFD)
How does the "apparatus Bay" not have smoke and fire alarms ? Aren't all buildings including homes (no matter the age) required by law to have smoke/ fire alarms ??? Something smells fishy here.
Cooking in the tub😂😂😂😂
No 😮smoke detectors
They just wanted to get their firehouse upgraded
King of the Hill (Season 3, Episode 10)
How the turns table.
I saw them washing the trucks the day before....
Dude meant to put his Hot Pocket in for 3 min but accidentally hit 3 hours?
That sucks ! to have a fire at your own station , hope the other stations don't run with jokes of this event
He said "ain't nobody got time for dat"
No housewatch detail out West?
no, that's not a thing at any dept. out here..
Not one person showed up at the rally point either.
This is what is goin to happen with the Electric Fire Apparatus
Care to tell us why? What is the issue with the EV fire apparatus currently on the market?
These issues won't be any more frequent with electric trucks; these fires happen all the time with liquid fuel apparatus as it is. Firetrucks are unfortunately susceptible to fires more than other vehicles because they already have increased electronics on board for various motors, emergency lighting, etc.
Tacoma FD episode lol
How many EV's were in there?
None. Only LAFD Engine 82 has the one EV rig. LACoFD doesn't run those.
One would think a couple of them would be up on duty, keeping everything right to go or to spot stuff like this. Especially with how prevalent lithium ion batteries are now and its nasty habit of sometimes just randomly combusting for no apparent reason.🤔
How you let your own fire department burn down😢
So bad it happened
They didnt have far to drive 😮
Come on guys, we get it, you wanted new apparatus…you didn’t have to go that far 😂
EV..
Just imagine the fire if they had one of the EV fire trucks with a huge battery in there.
😮
I think you should consider First Alert, plung in a damn smoke dector. I mean, you're a paid firehouse.
Was there any lithium-ion batteries left on charge in the station bay? Those things are popping all over the nation.
No, LA County FD doesn't have those types of rigs. Only LA City's Engine 82 does.
They needed new trucks!
No smoke derectors?
this is what heat detectors are for
but waddabout a sprinkler system.
really?
How could this happen in a staffed firehouse lol
My first question is whether they are running any EV apparatus? Or maybe - "were they running any EV apparatus?"
No. As stated above, LACoFD doesn't run those kinds of rigs. Only Los Angeles City FD runs one, Engine 82.
Strange, how that's always the first question on somebody's mind... anyone seriously interested in this matter could find out that ICEs are a lot more likely to burn.
I live half a block away from this fire station! It was around 5 in the morning and I heard a huge boom! I swear I thought someone dropped a bomb lol
😅
fahrenheit 451
Regen comlete.
So Damn Stupid buying Electric Fire Trucks just glad all the Fire Fighters are ok but now you are going to have to post a Fire Watch in your Own Stations
LA county doesn’t use EV fire trucks, not yet at least, yet you seem so sure it was an EV fire truck that caused this fire? 🤨🤔🤨🤔
😳 Wait….what?
Ok. Not click bait.
Police raid police station!!
Ight who was playing GTA
Well geeze that’s embarrassing
