Well the original story was written by Harlan Ellison in 1956, so pretty sophisticated for the 50s. Today, well...
i always thought the robot was a maintenance robot that was malfunctioning, which is why it was hurting itself.
I'm pretty sure the idea is that it's using a lidar sensor to see and since it's hunting movement it sees flashlight as movement.
Also it's malfunctioning
In the episode its clear the robots mind is corrupted and isn't working properly.
Mainly its friend or for and targeting is all messed up (The robot is part of the same faction as the man).
So not a huge leap to think its haywire targeting could be tricked

We can see in the WORDS of GOD that the HOLY SPIRIT that CALLS the LORD JESUS the BELOVED SON is the GOD that TESTIFIES of His INCARNATION from the VIEW of the SPIRIT.
It was not done by the Holy Spirit, no one can know the true identity of the Lord Jesus.
So this OPEN TESTIMONY ALLOWS PEOPLE to KNOW that the LORD JESUS is the INCARNATION of GOD. And the LORD JESUS CALLED GOD the FATHER in HEAVEN when He PRAYED because of the HUMAN FLESH, He was not SUPERNATURAL, but LIVED with NORMAL HUMANITY and He FEELS a REGULAR HUMAN BEING. ☀️

It kinda makes alot of sense for Robots to not know that they're damaging themselves. The robot doesn't feel pain but it does know when it's damaged. Due to it's programing it thinks that the light was the threat that's damaging it's leg and not itself.
Good to know that in the future our AI robot guards are stupid enough to be defeated with a beam of light on their own limbs.

This is a very realistic depiction of a non sentient ai malfunctioning. If you've ever written code before this seems very much like a fatal script error. Just a feedback loop of "find movement - approach movement - find movement approach " and so on. It's not thinking just reading its code wrong.
I can see how that would be a likely cause for its erratic behavior. Software is after all never fully safe from acting up.

This series confuses me so much sometimes: some episodes seem to explore semi-reasonable perspectives on space exploration and technology, then there are ones like this that are just "what if we made a killer robot with the brain and eyesight of a cat". It's a cool animation, but the concept comes off as sci-fi shower thoughts.
It can actually be explained by AI hallucinations, where mistakes are made.
Robots are unlikely to ever be perfect, as they're a result of human creativity.

This story was originally written in the 60s, so of course it's going to be "dumber" than our more modern understanding/takes on Sci-Fi.
Sci-Fi/Speculative fiction also covers a hugeeeeeeeeeee range between Frankenstein and Killer Clowns from Outer Space. It's okay.

Yeah if it was ai even todaya ai it would either already know or very very quickly pick up that humans play dead. And a fool proof defense of that is to just decapitate every body. Cant fake that...

It doesn't have a sense of hearing, the story makes clear that it's a malfunctioning (or possibly reprogrammed) maintenance robot. It falls for such easy tricks and attacks itself because it was not made to have the intelligence needed to see through easy deceptions, nor does it have the sensory range you would expect a machine specialized as a guard to have.
The original story was from the 1950s.
It's probably not even an AI, it's likely that it's no more intelligent than an autonomous drone - it's merely following a preprogrammed set of instructions, albeit ones that have now malfunctioned.
