MAM Operário 2043 Sheepsfoot Liner Lock Knife Review. Like an Opinel but from Portugal

  • If you’re into traditional simply designed pocket knife like your grandpa or an old guy used to carry, MAM knives from Portugal is a good choice. This review specifically reviews the 2043 with has a sheepsfoot style blade and liner lock made from German stainless steel. The handle is made from Beech, which is a type of wood from trees. MAM makes all sorts of knives, some similar to the Opinel and some not, and all are $9-$30. So they’re cheap, sharp, and a really good value if you need a two handed every day carry knife that doesn’t look tactical.
    You can buy all sorts of MAM knives on Amazon:amzn.to/2ECZl15
    The MAM 2043 with Liner Lock:amzn.to/2CbD8Wb
    The MAM 2042 (without liner lock):amzn.to/2lIeHbK

      Easier to use than Opinel lock, but maybe not as secure. Who is gonna do hard ish with this anyway? I am going to use it for a hiking knife. Mine is standard small drop point and weighs 22 grams.

    I've seen a lot of reviews, but this one is my favorite! You gave the specifics of the knife including the thickness. Most reviews and sites don't give this dimension. It's important when I'm trying to figure out if it will feel comfortable in my pocket. I like your sense of humor very much. It adds so much entertainment to what would be another dull review. I hope you were a good dad, and took all that cut up cardboard out to the trash after the vid! Let's see what else you've uploaded.

    @luisytacc Před 6 lety +3

    Awesome video, thanks!
    Also, yay, I can significantly contribute to the conversation!
    I've talked to people who work at MAM before, and I've some extra information on these knives.
    1st, the steel they use is a 400 series steel, likely 420, but they have a better hardening protocol than most companies, so you can see it has a decent enough performance with a good heat treatment.
    b) The locking liner isn't actually meant to be a liner lock, a knife has one of those when the lock interfaces on an angle with the blade to lock it without play, and it includes a detent. What you have there can be more accurately described as a liner block - it's meant to travel the whole way, and unlike a liner lock which disengages upon lock failure, this will resist until the liner itself bends or is pryed off. Back before he accidentally deleted his videos, Kyley Harris of cKc knives had a video on a similar concept, and it showed it was much stronger than traditional liner locks or frame locks. However, because this is screwed onto wood, I agree with you on avoiding abuse.
    III The reverse direction to disengage the lock isn't out of love for lefties, it also thought out as a safety feature to prevent accidental disengaging, or so I was told.
    4 As far as the QC goes, it is somewhat spottier, I've had a chance to hold a few different ones of the same model and sometimes you'll find one with no play, or a bit. It is definitely a point that needs improving.

    Thanks Bro.
    An interesting knife, that many of us might have never seen. Had you not presented it here.
    It sure is an International knife, isn't it. Importing wood from France, and steel from Germany. Into Portugal. To then build knives, to sell to the U.S.A., and the rest of the world.
    It's also interesting, that this company was founded in 1870. Which just happens to be the year, that the Franco-Prussian War started. Which resulted in the collapse of the Second French Empire, and in the formation of both the French Third Republic, and the German Empire.
    Have you seen the new 2018 Benchmade knives yet? Coming to stores, in the next couple of weeks. I spotted three or four right away, that I'm sure interested in. Which is nearly a miracle for me, considering Benchamde's recent offerings.
    The OKC RAT 2 in D2 steel, should be in stores this week. That's going to be quite buzz-worthy.

      "The OKC RAT 2 in D2 steel, should be in stores this week. That's going to be quite buzz-worthy."

    • @SteveKluver
      @SteveKluver Před 6 lety +1

      I've been following it pretty closely. From at the factory. Then to late shipping. Then to missing the Christmas shopping season. Then landing in Customs, in which it was held-up a little longer than usual. For an OKC shipment of this type.
      They are, in Country!!!
      I have three pre-ordered. The Dealer I ordered mine from. Says he is expecting them Thursday, Jan. 4th. I'm close enough to them, that mine should be here this coming Saturday! : - )
      They (OKC) pop into the Blade forums, from time to time as well. So some of this info., comes straight from the horses mouth. So to speak.

    • @Josh-mj9yp
      @Josh-mj9yp Před 6 lety +1

      @SteveKluver Před 6 lety

      I ordered mine, from Dean, here > www.deanosknives.com/apps/webstore/products/show/7685088
      No pictures yet. He'll shoot them, once they arrive. He only ordered one of each, to "see how they were going to sell". I laughed when he said that. I said: "I'll show you just how well they are going to sell. Give me one in Black/Satin, one in Brown/Satin, and another one in Tan/Satin. So, those are Pre-Sold out already : - )
      5 color options to start. Black, Brown, Tan, OD Green, and CF. All in either a Satin blade finish, or dark coated. So 10 new part numbers.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  Před 6 lety +1

      The opinel no.8 has a tad thinner blade spine... not by much though. This looks to be a flat grind, by the opinel has a very slight convex grind- I almost confused with a flat grind. This knif is just a bit lighter though... and I assume thats do to a bit less metal and smaller handle. To be honest though the weight difference is negligible.

My Vangedal and viper reviews from a year or so ago have few hits... but now that my channel is a little bigger I can branch out a bit more. Plus a lot of these knives are cheaper too. Thanks for the suggestions... I don't have a large budget right now but you've given me some places to start... and I also have some other Scandinavian stuff I'm interested in buying too. ever think maybe your videos are just to good for most people? And they just need shit table top reviews. People IRL (lol) don't use their knives. So with that logic they only want to see you "hypothetically" discuss their edge retention, durability and how many points this particular knife gets on your made up scale to answer that question of "yea you should totally buy this knife". Cause isn't that the real reason we all watch youtube vid's about knives? To justify buying another stupid f*ng knife that we dont need and most likely wont use. Im talking to you grimsmo norseman... I digress. #doworkson #twerk

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  Před 6 lety

      I have often thought if I'm making the wrong video for the wrong audience and I think that's a possibility. But I also have to assume there are people like me... who get interested in things, but don't take it too seriously- and maybe... some of those peoples need a source of entertainment. Not everyone gets/likes my jokes and that's fine.
      I pour a lot of time and money in the channel, and this year will be make or break for me. I make no more money than a did a year and a half ago from ad sense... and despite my channel have 19k subscribers as of this morning... the amount of videos I have made last year even surpassing 10k views is not a good percentage.
      But yeah... you're right on all points. People want to be bullshitted. People like a justifcation for their consumer habits... and also the occasional rant FAIL video, to help give the illusion the shit and all bullshit. Dig?

      I hear you and do much enjoy your sense of sarcasm and honestly find your videos more of a source of entertainment with comedy than I do for knife reviews. Its more so using knives as the medium for your jokes. We also find ourselves in an odd segment of a hobby. Its people like us who get jokes and dont take things to seriously. Then you have the other side of the table thats all "i need this for defense and the government's ganna take our guns!!" which they are :-). It would be sad to see your videos end but, I get it. happy to help out on IG if you want some reposts.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  Před 6 lety +1

      I'll be doing this for a while. I have too many things I bought that I need to review. Yeah some people take this shit too seriously. I work with a guy who said he's shown his blade to some people in shitty parts of town before, that were trailing him and they've backed off. That's never happened to me, but I can see how that might help (or also go horribly wrong). But as far as self defense, I've done half assed google research, and I keep coming to these:
      www.bladeforums.com/threads/have-you-ever-used-your-knife-for-self-defense.211553/
      And this one: www.defensivecarry.com/forum/defensive-knives-other-weapons/177438-curious-if-anyone-here-has-actually-used-knife-self-defense.html
      Now I personally don't know anyone who has ever used one in a fight either. But if you watch youtube... just look at all the videos for knife self defense. I have no interest in that. But it's funny! I'm not saying their isn't validity to self defense... but so many knives are marketed only or primarily as self defense weapons... and most people never ever ever use them as such. Unless youre in a field where you need stuff like a push dagger... they're stupid. But they sure as shit fill up my instagram feed!

    Super wobbly with ridiculous blade play but
    If you use the knife within the scope of duties with which the company prescribed to the knife you'll be ok. Just don't treat it like a swiss army, or an opinel, because its not

    I confess, I laughed out loud at "Molly Bend Um." Please forgive the chemistry snob in me. It's more like "Moh-LIB-Dih-Num". And more importantly, thanks for the review of a MAM knife. I've wondered about them, but there's not a lot of reviews available. Also, what's wrong with using real estate to launder money? The sitting (the "H" is silent) president does it, so it MUST be okay.

      Sometimes I think about cross referencing and checking pronunciations... but then I spend too much time tweaking colors and writing and editing... I phone it in and hope people laugh! All I have to say about 2018... it’s gonna be a bumpy ride!

    No way, I bought one of these in France. Fckn bargain. I think they're actually owned by Opinel. It is basically an Opinel knife. Never seen these on the tubes. I used mine to cut Sausicon-sec sausage and make sandwiches. So cheap I even left it in France rather than risk Ferry/Customs/border-police who get kinda touchy even about sheep's foot knives hardly more dangerous than a Gillette razor

    What did you do in the mini grip review to scare off benchmade? Demand a gold class? They're douches anyway. You like them? Well now you have the privilege of paying even more for liking them. Spyderco too. It's getting expensive to get bug symbols on your knives.

      Shit I don't know... I feel like it was very similar in tone to the Bugout review. We had been talking on Instagram DM over a few weeks... they sent it to me... said I got it... they said good... then I said I was done... here's the link, hope you like it. Then nothing. I left it at that though... I have had that happen so many times over the years- I don't press the issue. I can do this channel with or without Benchmade sending me a knife occasionally. I had already spent a good amount on their stuff anyway.
