  • Rhapsody in Blue was composed in 1924 by George Gershwin, who took jazz off the streets, dressed her up, and took her to the concert hall. :-)
Instrumentation: 2 trumpets, flugelhorn, trombone and tuba. In the video I'm playing the tuba part on my flugel, down 2 octaves.
Arranging credits to the brilliant Bob Driggs, and to Gordon Goodwin for his spectacular big band arrangement upon which this is based. musescore.com/...

George would be proud. The rest of us jealous.

The two people who gave this a thumbs down are curmudgeonly crosspatches who don't deserve that gorgeous glissando!

Excellent! Effortless register jumps, and good style as always.

23 May: not particularly a brass fan. 24 May: not particularly a brass fan. 25 May: not particularly a brass fan. 26 May: massive brass fan! (Coincidentally, 26 May was when I discovered Maeve Lander's CZcams channel)

Wow, Maeve. You totally owned this one - from the initial slide into the solo (0:28) to the swing groove established at (1:10) to the great technical riffs in the flugel and trombone parts (2:07 & 2:35). Some really great playing there. I especially like your improvised solo at 2:42 - it is WAY better than anything that I could have come up with, and added a nice bit of sparkle to the middle section. You pulled off the transition very well at 3:41 leading to some nice solo work on your trombone. A better arranger would have written in some rests here and there to give the chops a break, but you toughed out 6+ minutes of playing (X 5) to bring this to life. Thank you for this gift!

Perfect! I will have to watch this again (but not limited to) in two weeks time because I will be flying the "friendly skies" on my way to Ho Chi Minh City and Tokyo, for a two week holiday. The unmentioned airlines would do well using this interpretation of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.
Sit back and relax, and enjoy your flight!

Wow! Maeve, even though I'm a clarinetist (currently bass and contrabass) I have to say that that opening was magnificent! This performance gave me chills.
I haven't perused your whole book; I'm rationing myself; so please forgive me if I sound ignorant, but have you done any of the pieces that Glenn Miller made famous?
Lastly, I love your facial expressions and your smile.

Thanks for listening Andrew. Yes! I'm a Glenn Miller fan so you'll find quite a few of his tunes here. As a clarinetist you may also be able to hear I love Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw - often sneak in a few quotes into other things. Enjoy!
