  • Stronger hamstrings are key to kicking well in martial arts.
    As well as improving the active range of motion, stronger hamstrings are more injury resistant and can allow higher forces to be produced.

    Applicable not only to martial arts. Karate training is ideal for any sport requiring power, explosive force, fast reactions and flexibility.

    How long do you practice daily and do you have a routine?

      My training is split into separate things, Karate, weight training and cardio. The frequency of each changes depending on what kind of phase I’m in. But I train 6 days per week plus teaching karate.

    I have an idea for a video: it would be good to post one for people who want to improve their jumps (be it in Kata or for Yoko-Tobi-Geri).
    Research suggests Explosive Quarter Squats are best for these (better than deep squats), and can easily be done in the dojo by just substituing the barbell with a partner.

      Good idea, yes you’re right quarter squats are good for this and exercises that take advantage of the stretch reflex/ plyometric movements.
      I’ll see what I can do 👍🏼

    I have done these in the past and, on occasion gotten nasty mucle cramps that evening! No big deal,no advise needed just though you all might get chuckle if you've ever felt my pain! On a more serious note: I appreciate your input on performing a non- telegraphicing front thrust kick. Ae: foot move before the knee and the hip fully engages as the leg reaches full extension, reaching further forward than typical front kicks like you've demonstrated so well? Mae geri kekomi?

    I always feel these in my lower back more than my glutes and hamstrings

    • @jkgardiner
      @jkgardiner  Před 19 dny +1

      Try tilting your pelvis up to the ceiling and keeping it there while doing the movement, there should be no movement in the back

    John Sensei...Are knuckle push ups good or bad...? I heard from someone that they are bad and don't do it because it damages the nerve passing through the knuckles...is it true? If so what else can be done to condition our knuckles?

    • @jkgardiner
      @jkgardiner  Před 19 dny +3

      I’ve done them a lot and also done a lot of impact work without gloves, I think there is a risk of injury to the knuckles but I’ve not experienced it in 24 years of karate so far. It is, in my opinion, very important that we do condition the knuckles to some extent in order to properly understand how to punch correctly.
