Watching spongebob in english, no subtitles, as a 6 year old who only understood Mandarin was a fever dream.
I was on a camping trip watching the early seasons on the small mini van TV while my mom was cooking on the grill it was a fun trip
i have a weird memory of me watching spongebob’s house party
Theres alot, hard to know for sure

I’m pretty sure everyone who grew up with SpongeBob ended up being a better human being than they could’ve been without, that’s just how good it was
@briansme8589 how did those kids act?
That first bit he hit on abt how SpongeBob teaches kids about big people topics. That show taught me abt life before I even experienced it. I take lessons from the show all the time now.
I watched SpongeBob and was never good at cracking up jokes.

What's crazy is that this isn't even a US/Western phenomenon. Some countries that had good dubs for it, such as South Korea, also experienced this same cultural impact. I can't tell you how many times I've heard or seen a SpongeBob reference in Korean web-shows and from people who live in Korea. SpongeBob is universal.
In my country too, Indonesia. We still does SpongeBob meme time to time with the dub version. The VAs did their job perfectly
Same in Mexico the dub is very loved here!
The German one is a banger as well ❤
greetings from Ukraine haha
Here in the Philippines as well. The memes slaps fr
I kind of love that SpongeBob is a childlike adult. I have a full time job and go college every day, pay my bills and act adult, but really I don't feel like an adult. The comfort of look at this guy who is also just figuring it out :') really reconciles something for me
Dude same omg. I relate to this guy so hard lol
Well stated. I am 55 and I still like watching SpongeBob, with or without my nephew. Like SpongeBob, I enjoy my work, which is huge for elevating our quality of life.
Fun fact, Spongebob wasn't banned in my house, but Caillou was. My mom thought Caillou was an annoying, whiny brat and she didn't want us to act like him, but Spongebob was just a funny little show so she didn't care if we watched it
haha it was the same in my house. when i asked my mom why she said he was a whiny brat and she didnt want me to act like that.
dude me too- i think all parents hates Caillou
same!
thats literally much better
yeah my dad was the same but with barney, won’t explain the hatred but he wasn’t allowed in our house😭
I remember my dad walking past the tv as the memorable line "Seaweed. 50% sea, 50% weed" was being shown. He burst out laughing while my sister and I didn't have any idea why he laughed that hard lol
i think of 50% sea 50% weed every day lmao
My mom, a true hater of spongebob, laughed when spongebob yelled "pourquoi" during the lost nametag episode- and I will always remember that. Lol
British Columbia: 50% sea, 50% weed
1% evil 99% hot gas was my snap stories name for FOREVER 😂
Also my granpa loved spongebob and mr.krabs so much that he added their decals to most of the trucks in his company

I started tearing up when you talked about how they didn’t perform the SpongeBob band song at the Super Bowl. I’m not joking, that broke my heart, and to this day I still remind people of it and how we were robbed.
But yet they do the nickelodeon slime
I guess nickelodeon thinks slime is more important to their brand THAN THE FUCKING SWEET VICTORY SONG!! Jesus nickelodeon has truly been hot garbage for the last 10+ years and it doesn't look like that will change anytime soon..
As a consolidation they did the entire recording of the recent SuperBowl with Spongebob and Patrick doing the sportscast. If only I can find a place to WATCH IT
SpongeBob isn't just popular with our generation, it's cross-generational. I have nieces and nephews (12 and under) that quote the same lines from the classic episodes with the same enthusiasm as I did at their exact age and I can say the quotes in perfect tandem with them. It's so surreal
Early SpongeBob is quite literally, a timeless classic. I can’t believe we got to experience a show like SpongeBob growing up. Idk, a thing like SpongeBob feels like a one of a kind experience
Definetely THE most rewatchable show
Yeah watching it as a kid (on good cable tv) was a once in a lifetime thing because once you’re older you catch all the jokes and stuff you missed lol
lmao 🤣🤣🤣
SpongeBob has also had a significant impact on popular culture, with its characters, catchphrases, and memes becoming ubiquitous in mainstream media. The show has inspired merchandise, video games, movies, and even a Broadway musical.
SpongeBob and South Park are the best cartoons of all time no debate
My parents and I all loved SpongeBob. We still do. We all quote it to this day and it's a part of our lives
The same for me
Same. SpongeBob quotes are part of my vocab. If someone doesn’t get them, they won’t get me😂
Spongebob is so Awesome and funny and Wholesome
Same for me too!😂
All of my family, my grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins all love SpongeBob with an extreme passion and always watch a couple episodes when together.
my dad still quotes the swearing episode to this day, its one of the things that keeps my relationship with my dad going lmao.
I love SpongeBob so much, it truly raised a generation. I am Mexican so in my childhood I used to watch it in Spanish and dub was SO FREAKING GOOD, most of the joke were not lost in translation. This show it's great on every language.
stop why did i start tearing up at that early Internet sequence, my childhood flashed before my eyes 😭😭
But that one car scene... Gave me PTSD
Spongebob raised a generation that's for sure. Me and my friends still reference those earlier seasons to this day

When we were kids me and my brothers would go to my grandpas house to hang out. Every time we were there he always put SpongeBob on, because it gave him an excuse to watch it. I remember him dying of laughter from many of the episodes, especially “Band Geeks”. He once told my mom it was his favorite show. Just imagine an old widowed Vietnam Vet laughing his ass off watching a cartoon about a sponge. That’s why SpongeBob has always held a special place in my heart, because when I watch it I can still hear my grandfather’s laugh.
idk how this has no replies but this is such a beautiful memory. i love knowing that spongebob connects so many families everywhere just like it does for mine
My grandpa laughs so much during episodes, especially when Patrick has no pants on it always gets him, its so simple but amazing.
If i watch it without him i always hear him laugh and its 2x more funny that way
Don’t reply to many comments but that is just beautiful. Especially with the trauma’s that can come with war (or trauma in general), those things that can make you laugh your ass off without fail are just so special. Thanks for sharing this!
It's weird how shows like Spongebob are so well preserved in our memories that whenever I see a clip of a first season episode it feels like i watched it yesterday when it's probably been around 15 years
5:12 gave me instant ptsd

i hate the idea that parents thought spongebob was dumb because there are things i learned from it that i still use today. where else would i learn the word enigma? what 4 year old would know about oppression and wage theft off the top of their head. i even watch it in other languages to study

I don’t remember anyone complaining .
exactly
My cousin wasn't allowed to watch SpongeBob because his parents said it was inappropriate
And like…. They had the 3stooges and other “dumb comedy” depending on their ages. Are y’alllllll dumb too? Lmap
Btw, I strongly urge anyone who didn’t watch it as a kid to watch it now. It’s really good. My mom fell in love with it in her 20’s and I even know someone in their 40’s who is enjoying it right now. Never too old to enjoy good writing! :)
For real even as an adult honestly especially as an adult the first seasons hit different.
I'm sure I'll be enjoying it in my 80s. I'm not even 20 yet
Seasons 1-4
My buddy’s father in law only watched SpongeBob. No sports, sitcoms, no other TV.
SpongeBob is just plain hilarious. I bet people of all ages can enjoy it
Spongebob and Adventure Time both had such a huge impact on animation.
7:39 that was by far the most convincing “show’s over” gag I’ve ever seen, bravo
I have 2 degrees in STEM and arts and am working on a doctorate and my mom was OBSESSED with spongebob and it was mostly what we watched on TV. But we also weren't allowed to watch TV all day and even in summer she made us do workbooks (which we liked) and she never said no if we wanted a book. But also she really idolized intelligence and thought spongebob was a very clever show, which I now appreciate as an adult

THAT BREAK FROM CAILLOU TO PATRICK HAS ME CRYING
I was such a big Spongebob fan as a child, that I started memorizing the dialogue from the episodes (specifically seasons 1-3). I could recite entire episodes from memory. I still am a big fan as an adult and rewatching episodes is so comforting to me. It really brings me back to a happier time.
That moment of anxiety only for it to end in a Rick roll. Well played.
I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one 😂
Haven't finished the video. Thanks for the warning
Nevermind it was at the very beginning of the video, I got Rick rolled 😢
The pizza episode is my favorite.
I WAS FLINCHING AT MY TV
I am a horror fan, but still can't handle jumpscares because of prank videos like these from the 2010s :,)
Great video, I wasn't allowed to watch it growing up but I was surrounded by it, even one of my closest friends had a Spongebob themed birthday party and she would quote it all the time
That's crazy my family is Christian hardcore so we weren't allowed to watch anime Simpsons Ren and stimpy anyting magic related but we were always allowed to watch SpongeBob and my mom loves the show mostly because it's all relatable to her working experience as a young adult
That reminds me
I was allowed to watch sailor moon until the lesbian kiss after that anime was never watched inside the house again with the exception of cells at work
Because my mom likes cartoons where the characters have jobs
Aw man… no joke, my day to day life would be different if I wasn’t allowed to watch SpongeBob as a kid.
SpongeBob is the wildest thing to ban a kid from watching (well maybe not during seasons 4-6, it got a bit... fucked up at times during that era.)
@@IsaiahAmos017i am so sorry for you. It's sad most Christians don't realize how abusive they are.
Yeah same I wasn’t allowed to watch it either because my dad found it annoying. But I would just watch it whenever he wasn’t home 😂 watched nearly every episode
SpongeBob was my hero growing up as a kid. This was the main cartoon I would always watch. The newer seasons may not be as good as the ones before it, but at least newer generations can discover who SpongeBob is. It’s also the reason why I’m glad the show bluey is so popular, cause the kids watching bluey can have a different yet similar experience we all had when watching SpongeBob.
Not me crying at the shared human experience we all shared.
Being a daughter SpongeBob was actually one of the first ways me and my dad connected. It was the start of our rebellion against moms rules 😅 Ever since then, as I’ve grown, my father and I developed similar humor making it possible for us to bond in positive ways. Now as a 20yo we still find new shows to watch together- mainly adult cartoons such as family guy and Rick and Morty. There’s no one else to thank but SpongeBob for the bond I’ve always loved having with my father ❤
Me and my dad watched king of the hill together, I’m in my late 20s and it was amazing! It’s hard to believe it came out in the late 90s, the stories and issues and characters are so relevant even today
This is exactly my experience too. Me and my dad loved spongebob and bonded very early on because of the show. My mom never hated it, just wasn't her cup of tea. But yes my dad and I have similar senses of humor and I believe spongebob helped bridge that gap. Maybe the bond that grew between me and my dad is the reason i was obsessed with the show growing up. I had a bedroom fully decorated in spongebob apparel much like the west Virginia bedroom shown in the video lol. Either way, we are very close now and always discuss different TV shows with each other. I only associate spongebob as mine and my dad's show. And I will always happily bring up sponge Bob to him whenever I see him. Anyway spongebob holds a special place in my heart ♡ glad to know someone else had a similar experience
I'm 30 years old and I still drop Spongebob S1-3 references on my coworkers my age at a Hardware Store of all things, and the references land every time.
My dad watched SpongeBob with me and my older brother growing up and he loved the show just as much as we did. I’m almost 23 years old now and I still hear him quoting the show every now and then asking him how he even remembers. He always says that the show was just that good and I couldn’t agree more. I can’t wait to watch this show with my kids.
Another name that attests Spongebob's iconic status: Spongiforma squarepantsii; I remember hearing the news that there's a new sea sponge species named after the character.
I just looked it up! It's a real fungus species, but not sea sponge. And it's endangered :')
my mom hates spongebob because spongebob’s annoying, she does like squidward tho, and my dad likes spongebob
Both get it in different ways lol
She hates it bc she's probably squidward energy 😂☠️❤
Man, SpongeBob was how I was developed as a person, it shaped my sense of humor, and sure, my little 5 (I think) year old brain might have gotten tired but with my ADHD ass brain, my brain kept up (I think) somehow and because of it I'm nostalgic for it and other 90's cartoons without it, I wouldn't be interested in voice acting, art, or most of the things I'm into nowadays. R.I.P Stephen Hillenburg, if it weren't for you and your amazing mind I wouldn't be the man I am

This is by far the best video I have seen about my childhood favorite: Spongebob
I’m so impressed with the quality of this video. I know it took a long time to make this thank you really enjoyed it
The Super Bowl incident was (at least for me) rectified by the Dallas Stars hockey team doing a Sweet Victory themed halftime show. Not the same, but it was nice for what it was.
I remember seeing videos of that its awesome
Am i the only one that would ever say ,”This is like that episode of Spongebob” in a social situation before the memes?
This video won me over, I subscribed. I love the impact SpongeBob had on me. Even if he was a working adult he had whimsy and a childish spirit, something I aspire to have at my big age too :]
We’re all goofy goobers!
My eldest sister & brother-in-law were one of those parents who believed that whole "Spongebob makes your kids dumb!" shit going on at the time. So unfortunately their kids didn't get to enjoy the early seasons of the show. So many memorable quotes ❤💫🤗.
My whole family loves Spongebob, especially my dad. The "Graveyard Shift" episode was my favorite as a kid so now the hash slinging slasher is an in-joke in my family. I do remember some of my classmates in elementary school not being allowed to watch it, which I always thought was weird.
The best Spongebob memory I have was when I was about 7 or 8 years old, watching it in my room one evening. The episode ended, the credits started to roll, an eerie feeling crept in as it was getting late and the house was dark (the end credits can be kind of unsettling in the right atmosphere) and for a brief moment, the TV went black in between showing the studio logos and the next commercial. A moment so small and inconsequential but was also exhilarating and creepy.
My dad basically got me into Spongebob. Stephen Hillenburg had amazing ideas and most episodes from seasons 1 to 3 are genuinely super-well written comedy. Just rewatched the film yesterday and oh is it amazing. Genuinely good, not just funny.
11:11 Caillou wanted to swim and dive just like the other children.

19:00 My mom was the one to suggest “Sweet Victory” being played when the bengals won. She always loved spongebob and watched it with us.
I honesty can place back conversations that lead to me becoming who am to this show. Band geek opened a whole new world of loving the idea to play music and my mom telling me she played the tuba in the band, so I went to marching band. Did band camp, rode (road road road), those long bus rides, played for thousands I've never met. It was so impactful for me as a person all to Spongebob.
Being said my mom, my brother and I all still sing patricks song, and quote our favorite quotes to this day.
Its brought so much genuine happiness to our exhausting world. I always wanted and aimed to be as non bothered, friendly and genuine as spondgebob when it comes to day to day life. Its definitely helped me mentally with my work ethic.

I was 19 when SpongeBob came out but my brothers and sister were much younger. And therefore the memories of watching it together was great in 1999-2002. Also the jokes were really meant for teens anyways. Most 7 year olds wouldn’t get the jokes. And my female friend started calling me snail 🐌 (at that point I had not been introduced to SpongeBob yet).
I live in North Europe, Finland and I've always loved Spongebob. There was an American exchange student in my class in high school and due to the cultural differences there wasn't much to bond over until my friends and I asked him about Spongebob. It was crazy to learn how some of the most iconic moments and jokes in the American version of Spongebob were lost in the Finnish translation and the other way around. We really became friends after that because Spongebob helped us to get to know each others

Kind of disturbing tbh you didn’t miss out.
Parents in the early 2000s: "Watching SpongeBob is gonna make you stupid!"
Parents in 2023: "So what if my kids have unrestricted access to everything on the entire internet? They'll be fine."

Great video. The only thing I disagree on is saying that basically all of modern spongebob is bad, because even though the current seasons are nowhere near as good as the originals I think seasons 9,10, and 11 in particular have some pretty good episodes, not all of them are good dont get me wrong, but theres definitely a healthy amount that are worth at least one watch. I still cant believe Stephen is gone though, he'll always be my idol. Spongebob means so much more to me than just being a silly cartoon with memes.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh yeah, I rewatched more from those seasons since I uploaded, and I wish I took it easier on them. Found myself enjoying it more than I thought I would.
Exactly 👏
I feel like the pre-2014 seasons of SpongeBob weren’t all that bad if you ignore the grotesque closeups, the ones now just feel like brain melt with excessive references to grand moments from those older seasons
Yeah, am I the only one who watched SpongeBob in it's "golden era" and then seasons 4-present and always enjoyed it no matter which season it was?
I just love the show so much and every season has some really great episodes within it. ❤
@@NightCloudI similar for me actually, I think it's still a bit controversial to say this because the first three are just so so well written and hilarious, but for me, because I started watching the show on TV around the time that they were premiering seasons 7-9 with only reruns of season 1-4, it's 7-9 that are really nostalgic for me. I haven't watched the newer seasons 12-13 but I did quite enjoy season 10 and 11 so hopefully it will still be a good watch!

My fiancé and I watch the early seasons on the regular and quote it constantly

It's safe to say that there isn't a show that has universally defined a generation quite like SpongeBob. Be it the classic seasons or the more recent seasons from season 9 onwards, there is quite alot to love about the show, its characters and... well, everything! This video does a great job showcasing the impact of SpongeBob. Great work on this!
The editing on this was actually FIRE! Sick video
As someone in animation school, the whole “Caillou strains the brain less than spongebob” argument makes sense. Storyboard artists intentionally have to make sure they keep everything looking “neutral” and calm when working on shows for young children. Think the animation speed and style for fighting animes meant for older audiences vs. Baby shark.
Also, children shows often bring on child developmental specialists for insight on what to add to boards and what not to add
