CANON R7 Focus Bracketing REVIEW for MACRO: Hand-held vs Tripod Shots | Depth Composite Viability

  • This video is my in-depth, initial review of the Canon R7's in-built focus bracketing feature. I assess its viability whether it be used for hand-held or static shots while using a tripod. I also compare the effectiveness of the depth composite feature, which is the in-built algorithm that can align & stack individual layers in camera to Photoshop's stacking program, to Luminar Neo's Focus Stacking AI & to a specialised focus stacking software, called Zerene Stacker as well.

    Great video, Peter! Focus bracketing is one of my favorite features of my R7 and R6 Mark II. I've been concentrating mostly on birds for the last few weeks but it's almost macro season here in the US and I'm excited about it!

    Some great examples here mate. Fantastic to see that there is the internal composite feature on the R7, this was something I was slightly disappointed with in the R5 and R6 as that was not an option, great to see it in the R7 and seemed to do a decent job. BTW that jumping spider made for a cool piece of abstract art when it wasn't aligned. Great vid mate, enjoy your weekend.

    Great work Peter, not a feature I've tried out on the R7 , also very interesting to compare the different software and to note their strengths and weaknesses. I think for sanity tripod stacking is the way to go. 😀

    • @peterviragphoto

      Hey Chris, thanks for watching! It can be pretty brutal because the AF point is gonna move slightly, especially when the conditions are sub optimal and trying to stay still is virtually impossible. Add to that wind, crazy non-stop moving subjects and you’re definitely gonna go insane haha. Have a great weekend!😊

    Fantastic video Peter. Now that we are in spring, I am hoping to get back out for some macro. I did not even think about this feature in the R7 - like the new feature in the R5. Glad it is there and for someone shooting projducts or something of that nature, it will be awesome. I am a purest and like just one photo... plus I don't have the stacking skills that you do!!! 🙏🤗❤

    Thanks for this info. I don't see you using a flash. I want to stack images but for.better lighting i would like tonuse a flash an difusser. When in single shot the flash works but in bracketing it does not. Any idea why this is?

    • @peterviragphoto
      @peterviragphoto  Před rokem +1

      Hi there. When I’m in he field I always use a flash with a diffuser/reflector kit. This was a controlled test indoors while shooting on a tripod , thatswhy I used an LED light. The reason why your flash doesn’t work while bracketing is because the flash can’t recycle at that speed. Cheers

    Can I stack in the camera a dozen of star picture without AF bracketing ,in manual focus ? I didn't find focus stacking

    • @peterviragphoto
      @peterviragphoto  Před 6 měsíci

      When you focus on stars the focus remains the same and that is about exposure bracketing to minimise noise levels and maximise detail, so focus bracketing won’t work. Focus bracketing is only enabled for certain AF lenses that Canon supports. Cheers

    So annoying that you can't set a dedicated button for it. Most people in macro would like to turn it on or off since you can't use a flash, depending on your situation. Having to go through the menu each time is cumbersome in the field. Same as burst mode, which I use for wildlife. You CAN set a dedicated button for this, but when you press it, all it does is enter the menu where you still need to press 4 other buttons to set it up. And not being able to save any of these things on when registering to C1,2,3 is frustrating.

    • @peterviragphoto
      @peterviragphoto  Před rokem

      Hi there. The high fps burst mode can be registered & saved, not sure what you mean. Re the bracketing, haven’t tried to save it as a custom shooting mode as I prefer manual stacking when shooting hand-held. Cheers

    • @ArcanePath360
      @ArcanePath360 Před rokem +1

      @@peterviragphoto No, the "burst mode" which has a sub-section for halfway holding down the shutter where it has a pre-burst which records to the buffer and only saves to your card when you press the shutter fully. It's good for capturing something that you don't have the reactions to shoot, such as a bird taking off. When you shut the camera down and restart it, you have to go through 2 menu items again to enable it. One for burst mode, then the submenu pre-burst. Super annoying.

    • @peterviragphoto
      @peterviragphoto  Před rokem

      No worries, I got you, was thinking just the standard burst. I’ve never used that feature , might give it a go in the near future. How much does it affect battery life? Hopefully Canon will add these sometime via a firmware update. Thanks again for dropping by & have fun shooting!

    • @ArcanePath360
      @ArcanePath360 Před rokem +1

      @@peterviragphoto It doesn't affect battery life any more than shooting at 30fps in electronic mode, since that's basically what it is. It's more suited to wildlife than macro. I don't think adding it via firmware will happen since it specifically gives you a warning message that you can't save the features in your custom modes. I don't know what makes it unable to do it, maybe internal memory limits or something

    its so annoying you cant use the mechanical shutter with stacking and cant use a flash

    • @peterviragphoto
      @peterviragphoto  Před rokem +2

      Imo electronic shutter works better for stacking anyway as the mechanical shutter might introduce even more camera shake. Would be cool if the flash could recycle that fast.
