      "Drunken Angel" and "Essence".
"Essence" was the first song by her that I ever heard. I was doing merch for a buddy of mine, and being just a general hang around, back in Texas circa 2002. We were driving back from Austin to Houston at 3 in the morning with his drummer, and I was sleeping in the back of the Durango with all of the equipment when I was woken up by that song. I immediately asked, "Who is this? This is amazing."
After that I jumped into her music feet first and was able to see her play 2 times. Both killer shows.
I also love "Drunken Angel". It's what introduced me to Blaze's music.

Always had great musicians with her-particularly guitarists. One of our icons. When you think of great American songwriters-she is in there with Townes VanZant, Dylan, Earle, Clark, Hank, Dolly, Loretta, Bacharach, Webb, Joni, Young, Lightfoot etc. A great gift to the World!

I grew up in Houston and used to see Lucinda in the 70s. I was 17 and she was 22. She wore a big floppy straw hat and a sundress. Didn’t hear from her for many years until she started putting out records.

I belong to a Townes Van Zandt Facebook page and this question came up about Townes' songs. When someone mentioned their favorite Townes song I'd agree, yep, me too. Then 10 minutes later someone would mention a different song. Again I'd agree, yep, me too. It's similar with Lucinda Williams. Someone mentions their favorite song from Lucinda and I'd be yep, me too. And the next... and the next. The first that came to mind was "Passionate Kisses", but all 13 on "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" are also my favorite.

Good interview... I figure all life is art. Most of us just don't know it. We get twisted and tangled by things that we forget our original authenticity. That's what artists like Lucinda remember and live... be yourself. It's sure is a hard lesson for something so easy. Thanks Otis and Tim. I get to remember this lesson for a little while.

Lucinda's self-titled album for Rough Trade was special to me. I was a new DJ at the time and it was my first time hearing her. The album seemed to be one great song after another and, weekly, it was hard to pick a single song to play. I can't tell you how many times I "accidentally" let it track into the next song. I'm gonna say "The Night's Too Long," because it was the one that pulled the most requests from the start, and as a rookie DJ I really appreciated getting the feedback.
(Side note: I did meet Lucinda at a songwriter showcase at Slim's, in the mid or late 90s. The show wound up going across the street to the Paradise Lounge after hours, where I wound up spending most of my time with Doug Sahm.)
Otis: "Big Whiskers," that was your song for me. Not only as a DJ, but as someone who came from a family that fished.

Hi, Otis. My favorite Lucinda song, by far is 'Essence'. The first time I played it for a girl I was seeing, she kept hitting the repeat button and It soon became 'Our' song. It kind of mirrored our relationship in ways. I first me her in 7th grade. I really liked her and thought she was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. Back then, I didn't know how to talk to girls at all, so here's what I did at school one day. She had a cheap lock on her locker, I broke it off and put my combination lock on it. I stood back and waited until she tried to open it. She just stood back, trying figure out if she had the right locker, that's when I walked up and opened it for her. She told me (when we were dating) she was so mad at me she wanted to hit me, but that I was so cute, lol We never did date until almost 50 years later. She still looked as beautiful as she did in her youth, now even more so. We told this story at a class reunion party and all the woman swooned and said how romantic it was. We dated for 7 or 8 months, but found we were just too different and parted ways. She still had the lock and I still remembered the combination. I've always used music to remember the timeline to my life. Yesterday it was 50 years exactly that I saw Led Zeppelin at Tampa stadium. (May 5th, 1973) I still remember that day as if it were only yesterday. Sorry this was so long. I'm kind of a recluse now and don't talk to too many people.

A Lucinda Williams song cost me 700 dollars one time when I left my girlfriend in the east and was out on the West coast hustling work as a musician. I was sitting in my room and listened too late at night and not too clear thinking to the songs the Nights too Long and Changed the Locks. I got upset and bought a plane ticket to fly back across country to surprise her. Turns out, she was not pleased to see me. My favorite stuff from Lucinda now is songs like Greenville and the songs all of them on Ghost of Highway 20 , I find her mature work deeper listening but always satisfying.

As I am wont to do when encountering my heroes, I nearly embarrassed myself the first time I met Lucinda Williams. It was the late 90's and I was volunteering at the Kerrville Folk Festival. I would do anything asked of me just to hang, and that day my task was sweeping up the stage before the evening show. It was still early when, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a woman wearing a worn-out straw hat pulled down over her eyes. Assuming she was a Festival attendee who had wandered backstage, I headed toward her to see if I could help her find her way. Thankfully, as I was walking by, Rod Kennedy grabbed me by the arm and asked me to show Ms. Williams to the Judge's Panel, as she was judging the NewFolk Competition that year! So, with that brief instruction, Rod transformed a potentially horrible embarrassment into one of the great honors of my life...to escort Lucinda Williams to her reserved seat and make sure she was welcomed and comfortable. What a night.

Best song writer in last 30 years in my opinion was Elliot smith. He could take a $300 Yamaha & mesmerize a room full of people.
