Porosity and Permeability

  • This video briefly introduces the concept of groundwater before explaining how two properties - porosity and permeability - combine to determine the availability of groundwater and the ease with which it travels through rocks and sediment. We show simple bench-top demonstrations to illustrate each property and we calculate what a reasonable porosity value would be for common sediments such as sand and gravel. Finally, we discuss which rocks would best serve as sources of groundwater and which are likely to be barriers to groundwater flow. This is an excellently prepared video. I would like to point out however that porosity is inversely proportional to grain size in a well-sorted sediment. I'm curious if in your porosity experiment you were perhaps not achieving full saturation in the sand.

    Permeability: Gravel(water flow easily) > Sand > Clay (water cannot flow through)

    Very good, but how is permeability calculated with this experiment? Which equation allows to obtain data with this experiment?

    Thanks so much.. Only have one question.. have you ever see negative porosity .. in any mode 🤔

  • @arianacao2525
    @arianacao2525 Před rokem +1

    Porosity = amount of pore space
    Permeability = how easily water flows through
    Different materials
    Igneous rocks have high porosity but low no permeability
    Sand and gravel have high porosity and permeability = good groundwater sources
    Fractured igneous rocks, limestone, granite high porosity and high permeability = Good groundwater reservoirs
