    Thank you, Thorsten! You are actually a true Leica Ambassador and honestly, you are one of the reasons why I bought a Leica camera. I hope to attend one of your workshops or masterclasses this year! Thank you very much for everything you do. You are a true inspiration to many! Wishing you a great day, good mood and smile on your face,
    T.

    I like the objective criticism of the design. It is difficult to find that when people have a dedication to the money that they have spent. I find it almost impossible to find objective criticism of Fujifilm for example.
    Although, I suppose if you would like to retain resale collectors value of the lens, then punching the lens hood off is not the optimum method. haha

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  Před 7 lety +5

      Ha ha, yes the hood had dents rom the first time, and now even more. So it's not a collectors item anymore :-)
      I generally never think in resale value, and I tend to keep 90% of my stuff anyways.

  • @weisserth
    @weisserth Před 2 lety

    This was very useful for me. I will aim for the regular version with the built-in hood, more modern design. As much as I love this old design, I will opt for the more practical hood, filter size, and focus tab. Form follows function.

    I have the "regular" 50/1.4 ASPH and love it so much. I find that it gives a vivid color rendition, kind of Zeiss-like warm look. At F/2.0 it's as sharp as a pre-APO summicron. Altogether a great lens and along with the 35/1.4 and 90/2.0 constitute a killer system that I like to carry with me most of the time.
    BTW, I wish you'd do a video on what is your take on the Tri-Elmer lenses?

  • @manuelodabashian

    Hi Thorsten, I've been following your website for a while. I'm a big fan of your work and it's great to see you starting making videos!
    I have a question. You recommended using Leica lenses wide open. What tips can you give for nailing the focus in a street shooting setting? I found it quite difficult to focus with a summicron 50 especially when I'm trying to move through a crowd with people walking towards me. I can't imagine how difficult it would be with a noctilux 50!

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  Před 7 lety

      Generally, I focus and wait for people to walk into it. Then I take 2-3 photos and usually one of them nail it.
      Trying to follow-focus on walking persons usually result that they are 1 feet closer when the shutter is released (because of the short delay). Very little change of getting follow-focus right.

    Thanks Thorston for the honest review, I'll check out your article. I use the non limited edition 50mm f1.4 summilux almost everyday (on a canon m5, don't laugh!). The modern design is very practical with the pull out lens hood, finger tab for focus and lighter weight. You may want to get that one for everyday use and save the limited edition for resale once its appreciated substantially.
    I'm curious if you could do an article regarding how differently you use the noctilux vs the summilux 50mm. Also what do you think of the new SL body for the noctilux. Thanks!

      I will get around comparing those two lenses more in some months.
      The Noctilux and SL works really well together, but wait some weeks till we see what else is coming. The Noctilux is made for Leica M, so that's where it usually sits the best in terms of balance and all :-)

      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  Před 7 lety +1

    I have the regular 50mm Summilux ASPH and it is my favorite lens and the best lens I've ever used. I can't imagine ever selling it. I'm curious if the 35mm Summilux ASPH FLE is also considered an APO?

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  Před 7 lety +2

      No, the 35mm is not considered an APO.
      APO is usually for tele lenses, so that's why the lens designer Peter Karbe didn't want to call it an APO lens. With the 50mm APO f/2.0 however they went full out and also added APO to the name. So who knows what will happen in the future; maybe wide angle APO lenses as well..?

    Hi Thorsten!
    I thoroughly enjoyed this video and have learnt some great tips from you to improve my photography.
    I would appreciate your advice on my current situation.
    I have had a Nikon DSLR camera for 3 years now and it has been my first expensive camera that I have used for some more serious photography than just taking casual shots with an iPhone for example. The camera is getting a little old now and I have my sights on something new. One of my relatives is a representative for Leica and solely shoots with Leica, recommending it to me. I consider myself inexperienced but keen to learn about photography and see Leica as a good option. Personally I prefer the feel and look of DSLR cameras. I can see that you prefer to shoot with Leica's "M" series, however the price tag might be way too much for me. I am looking for a full frame sensor camera. Do you have any suggestions? Your advice would be much appreciated.

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  Před 7 lety +1

      Depends on what you want to do. dSLR are big (huge compared to Leica M). I like the pro Nikons but can't walk around with them.
      The Leica M9 is a good intro full-frame that can be gotten for around $2,500 second-hand (plus a lens $500 and up). I'm putting my Leica M9 review up within the next week.
      Else, if you want small portable, there's quite a few mirrorless around from Fuji, Olympus and all now.
      Leica SL is a "dSLR without a mirror" but that's rather new and getting into that for less than 10,000 with just one zoom is not possible yet.
      Another option is to look at Leica R lenses that has been fitted for Nikon. Those exist, just as you can change Leica R lens to fit Nikon. Leica R was made for the Leica R system, Leica's SLR system that also featured a digital back. Great Leica lenses, and they make a Nikon camera sing :-)

      I love the Nocti 0.95 but the Summilux 1.4 is a perfect lens. I think it all comes down to what makes you hearth beat the fastest and not much else. Having both alongside usually - for most people - makes no sense as they are so close in performance and all.
