Why do you place your right arm around the uke's back and not hold onto to upper lapel? The traditional way is to hold onto the lapel and use it to help pull uke up and over the back.
    Curious...

Actually the arm in the back IS the traditional way. It is part of Nage No Kata, and if you hold the lapel in kata competition you will be heavily penalized. However in shiai, one often keeps the hand on the lapel since going to the back requires a grip change. The advantage of the hand between the shoulder blades is that you can utilize your lat and bicep to pull your opponent onto your back much more ergonomically than if you just hold on to the collar. You actually have more power that way than simply pulling with your arm because of the body dynamics with the angle of your rotator cuff.

More of a hip throw or back throw?

Hip. There really is no such thing as a back throw. Hips support all the weight. To support weight on your back without hips is to invite severe injury.
