Ultralight Fishing With POWER PRO BRAID

- I took out my paddle board for a simple ultralight fishing trip with a goal of catching whatever bites. In this video, I strictly used 5lb Power Pro braided fishing line. This is the braid that all started it for me when it comes to finesse bass fishing, and quite honestly, it is a pretty good option for ultralight anglers. I would be lying if I said it is the best, but it does a pretty good job. Biggest complaint is that it isn't quite as smooth as other higher end models such as Phenix Iron Feather, Spro Finesse Braid, Daiwa J Braid X8, etc. The rougher feeling of the line leads to lesser casting distance with true ultralight equipment. It would work just fine if you prefer to use larger lures though.

I’ve watched basically ALL of your videos in the last couple weeks along with finding aggressively average anglers and you guys have helped me so much! I’m 28 and it’s only my third season back out since I was 8-10 so the quality of the content and education and specs REALLY helps an angler like me so truly Thank you for 12/10 content always🎣
I would like to second that!! I’m 27 & just got back into fishing. Used to as a kid, so nice to revisit it as an adult. Love the content! And happy fishing everyone!
You are both awesome! Thanks so much for watching and supporting the channel. Holler if you ever have any specific questions - happy to DM on IG to help in any way.
I'm an old timer who sticks with Stren and Berkley XL. Usually 2 to 4 lb. I throw a lot of 1/32 and 1/64 with your baits. Which are excellent by the way. Thanks for the video my friend.
I really recommend power pro or fire line they last a long time also the new seagur fluorocarbon in 4 pound is really good I even use it as tippet on my fly rods
@@fishlife1013 Witch do you recommend for 2lb mono, lines, maxima, stren, or trilene? Also wood like to no witch do you tink i shood buy, dobyns 6'2 ultralight or the 6'7 size. Reely enjoy your videos and be safe out there
@moseskongi4746 I just ordered some stren 4lb colored mono to try instead of braid. Usually I use maxima chameleon or ultragreen for leader material, so I'd say maxima would make an excellent mono for ultralight. I've used chameleon in clear water for trout with no issues.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with going old school and just fishing the simple stuff. Berkley XL works great.
Hi Ethan, I just found your channel and have been enjoying your videos. Well done! I'm 74 and have fished baitcasting, spinning, ultralight, fly fishing, and tenkara. Lately, I have been fishing ultralight spinning for Bluegill and most of my summer pond fishing. So, your reviews on equipment are timely.
Thanks so much David! Tight lines :)
I've tried Berkley, Power Pro, and JBraid. All good lines, but my go-to braids now are FINN's and Suffix 832.
I am not having much luck with Finns crappie 8lb on my 7ft UL. I expected much longer casting distance with that set up. Even my reel is a Japanese shimano 2500 that actually looks like a 1500
Surprised you prefer 832 over J Braid. I have never used Finns - will have to check it out.
I have that same braid and I love it. I use it on my crappie/ bobber set up and it is Amazing. Liking the stash goose. Love your content and products God bless brother and tight lines!!
I lost two Bronco Blades to some monsters in Beaver Lake last weekend. Only way to replace the two that I lost was to buy fifteen more! LOL I out fished everyone in our cabin thanks to the Bronco Blade! Even managed a decent bass! Maybe 3 pounds or so. My neighbor that was there (hosting us) said “next time we come out, you are not allowed to bring your ultralight.” And also said “I know you’re having a great time, but I’m not!” As he pulls the trolling motor back onto the deck to move to a new spot LOL
Thank you! Mule Fishing FTW!
Haha I loved reading this. Thanks so much for the support, and thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the video Ethan! Like the bright yellow of power pro! Have mostly J Braid Grand though on spinning outfits! Glad you had fun and hope you got a coffee on way home!
Thanks David! The J Braid is better than the Power Pro in my opinion so I think you are good to go :)
I use the UNI knot for everything - except braid to leader. The Alberto is just as easy and fast to tie as a double uni, is definitely a slimmer knot, and I think is stronger. An Albright is even faster to tie but I have had one or two of those come apart (which was likely my fault).
I better learn this one - thanks Matt!
Thanks for sharing this info on braided line. I personally have found that the 8 strand braid has worked a whole lot better for me than the standard 4 strand. (I believe that's what the line you are using in this video is.) I also wanted to add that although I have been using the Daiwa 8 strand, high vis chartreuse J-Braid x-8, in 6 lb. test (1.5 lb. mono diameter), I recently purchased a Shimano Vanford reel. I got it as a birthday gift in May (3 months ago) and have experimented with two different lines on the reel. I wanted red line because of the red accents on the reel. Hard to see, especially as it gets darker or on overcast / rainy days. I tried 4 lb. mono, which just didn't work for me, and so I really wanted to get some braid. After looking at a few different options in red, I decided on trying 6 lb. Kastking Super Power Silky 8. For me, this has been an awesome line, comparable to the Daiwa J-Braid x-8 6 lb. braid. Again, the down side is it's hard to see in low light, but it does come in several colors! I have also only had it for about 2 months, which for me is about 20 - 25 fishing outings. So far so good! Blessings!
Always experimenting! Sounds like you found a good one - thank you for sharing. That Vanford would look awesome with red line, but I agree, it is a bit too hard to see.
I agree with everything you said about power pro. I have not had ANY good experience with power pro besides their Maxx Cuatro braid.
They are a good line, but there are other lines that are great. Nothing wrong with Power Pro, just not my top choice by any means.
Great video, Just bought some Donkey Tail Jr.'s and I cannot wait to use them!!!
Thank you so much for the support!
That golden reel looks 💰 🤑 💸
I like this reel. Daiwa Procyon LT 1000 sadly not made anymore
Great show and tell video. I've had similar experience with the 5lb power pro spooled on my 5'6 Lews Speed Lite. Tiny baits not so good. Definitely good info Ethan. Blessings brother
Thanks Brian! Tight lines :)
For the money Jbraid is the right combo of quality and price. Power pro always sucked for me in the surf and fresh water. With that said I still prefer mono line in fresh for ultra light fishing especially fishing hair jigs in a river for perch and smallies. Suffix siege or elite in green does great for me on 1000-2500 reels 4-6lb. I can pull my kayak towards a snag on 6lb line so strength is not an issue. Your donkey jrs caught me a lot of panfish this year on 4lb elite. Will buy more and my friends want them too now.
Yeah J Braid is a great bang for the buck. I have a spool of Sufix Elite I have been meaning to spool up for crappie fishing. Great line option.
Power Pro is always a solid choice; however, my favorite is the Suffix 832. Absolutely fantastic line!
I will probably do a video on this soon as well. I like it, but I find it is similar to Power Pro in that it is a rougher feeling so doesn't do quite as well with the MICRO stuff. Either way, definitely a solid option.
That's the line I have on all 3 of my ultralight reels and haven't had a problem with it
Yep, it works totally fine. Just a few others I like a bit more, but there is nothing wrong with the OG, Power Pro!
I love your content. You have gotten me into ultra light fishing!
Thanks David! Tight lines :)
One thing to remember is that power pro is a Dacron braid vs the phoenix polyester braid. 2 completely different fiber characteristics. Dacron has a much higher abrasion resistance. Also the number of strands in the braid will add considerable breaking strength. A 6 strand line has less abrasion resistance than a 12 strand braid.
Thanks for sharing! I believe the lower the strand count, the higher abrasion resistance they tend to have. Example 4 is more abrasion resistant than 8
Either way, I like the smoother lines with higher strand count for UL applications. If you need higher abrasion resistance, I think a copolymer is the way to go.
I don't have a strong preference for braid, but Power Pro V2 and Daiwa J Braid 8 are my favorites so far.
Still need to use the V2 - so much gear to test lol
They make sinking braid line . Sunline and d-fier . I use sinking braid lines in bfs fishing when I want my lures to get into the water column of moving water
Yeah sinking braid would be a good fit for ultralight applications, especially in deeper water.
Really liking the trim beard, long moustache. Keep it growing.
Thanks brotha!
I been using 4lb yozuri hybrid and love it
Good option!
@FishAnything Thanks.man
Awesome been watching getting me.hooked.on micro baits broooo!
Isn't it the best way to fish? :)
You need too try Varivas brands, I like the AREA”super trout “INFINITY PE X8. Not cheap but great braided line 🐟on oh comes in 75M only
Might have to check it out - thanks!
Varivas and ygk the best!
I just got a spool of Xbraid which I believe is YGK?
@@FishAnything yes one of the best braids for the money. some spool of varivas will bleed on the first use but after that no more
I unfortunately don’t do much UL fishing but for my regular bass fishing spinning or casting I like the rougher feel braid I just find myself have way less trouble I feel I cast just as far and idk what it is I feel safer with it just feels stronger then the slicker braid prolly just me lol
My opinions would likely be totally different for casting applications on heavier gear, such as frogging for bass. I am speaking specifically about spinning applications for ultralight or finesse bass fishing
You should try Sunline Almight, it says its 7lb but the rating is several pounds off because it's using some japanese pound scale( it's closer to 5 or 6 lbs). It's also a sinking braid. It only comes in 165 yard spools though so you need a shallow spool reel or backing line. It seems slightly better than J-braid Grand or in the same ballpark. Comes in a VERY bright pink, or Olive with orange markers. It's worth trying. Pairs well with Sunline Super FC Sniper Fluorocarbon in 8 or 10lb for the extra abrasion resistance, not so much the line strength. It will handle the random pike and rock rubbing though.
I'm still on my hord of Defier, but I've heard the Almight is similar. Should be great for UL.
sooooo many lines to try. this sounds like a good one - thanks for sharing!
🔥🔥🔥 The best video!
Ultralight life Style!
#Foconoultralight
UL for life!
You should try EuroTackle 4 lb braid
Smooth silk!
I will check it out - thanks!
You should for sure try Power Pro Super Slick..it's like Night and day VS regular power pro
I will check it out!
love the videos, ive really been enjoying ultralight myself. I did have a question for you, with all the JDM gear coming out, and some of it being smaller hooks. Have you thought to try a micro/ ultra light Carolina rig?
I use carolina rigs all the time on ultralight. Small sliding weights can be tough to find for some, I got mine off temu of all places, and my rolling swivels. Such a good rig on ultralight, but you do lose gear here and there getting wedged in the smallest of rocks.
I think it could work quite well, but I think it would be important to use a bit longer rod and strong enough line to set the hook hard and bury the hook. I use a micro drop shot all the time and that works well. I could see the C Rig working well too.
I wonder how strong of a correlation there is between the roughness of a braid and how much better it casts when wet. I’m assuming the water creates a film and acts as a lubricant of sorts. Would be an interesting study to undertake.
Honestly you are probably spot on. The rougher braids need more water to get speed off the spool. The smooth lines don't seem to matter as much.
thanks for the great video and realistic review! I've heard before that some of the famous braids are stiff and rough, like power pro. i use j braid grand, shimano kairiki 8x vt and rapala rapinova x. all are under 0.4 pe. I am satisfied with them.
but I want a little change. fc, mono, polyester lines are weak and have memory.. I found something new, for horse mackerel at sea.
Duel The One -PF (Polyethylene Fusion) LINE Patent P.
can you please take a look at this new line?
I'm afraid to paste the link because then my comment will be displayed.. it seems fantastic to me!
Ooooh this sounds interesting and unique. Thanks for sharing!!
I got some Eurotackle Micro Finesse "Ultimate Smoothness" Braid from Bait Finesse Empire and the 8lb version is super thin and smooth, thinner than most 4lb braids I've seen. Have you tried it?
Haven't tried it but I heard it is good. Will check it out!
Not sure if you or anyone else mentioned it, but I sometimes have problems with braid not wanting to sink like flouro does when fishing ultralight. Find it hard for anything under 1/16 to sink when throwing straight braid without a flouro leader
Braid floats so it will reduce the rate of fall of smaller baits. Good callout.
great video! why an inflatable SUP instead of an inflatable kayak? and do you feel like you need an anchor to stay in one place?
Maybe the day will come where I fish out of an inflatable yak. I like the SUP because it offers so much fun from a recreational perspective and I already have a normal kayak. I don't ever use an anchor but I also don't mind drifting. An anchor would be helpful to hold location.
Diawa j x 8 braid
Can't go wrong with this one.
Your videos are great. Do you use straight braid? Also do you own Mule fishing? I heard you did. Just placed an order for each color of bugs.
Thanks for the support! I do own Mule Fishing :) And I use braid with about 6 feet of copolymer leader.
@@FishAnything awesome. Thank you. I went out this past Sunday and caught some smallmouth in the creek on the burro bug. They work great.
Would love to hear your preference on BFS braid /line as well. I know you mostly focus on spinning but does it translate over to BFS? Or is it a totally different animal?
Because BFS is still light line focused, I think this will all still apply. You may want slightly higher diameter to pair best with the reels though.
@@FishAnything do you find a difference between 4 or 8 strand for bfs?
Have you ever used the kistler ultra light? I’ve been looking into it and wondering if you think it’s worth it.
Haven't tried it but maybe I will check it out!
I always enjoy your content, Ethan buddy! Dick's Sporting Goods brand braid is smooth. If you find it on sale on a deep discount, as I did, it's worth trying.
Do you think a braid can be too smooth? My one concern about the Dick's braid is more knot failure at the braid to leader connection, as compared to Stren braid and Sufix ProMiz braid. The biggest difference I see in the Dick's braid is it's much smoother than those other two braids.
Is the extra smoothness of Dick's braid causing more knot failure? Or, do I use Dick's braid on more reels, so there are more chances of knot failure. My scientist hat is on 🤠, I WILL GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS!
It very well could be line slippage. That smoother braid may potentially slip on the knot because it isn't grabbing as well. Just a theory. Never had an issue with it with my Phenix or other smooth braids, but maaaaaaybe.
Great video, are you still liking the Elixer?
It is a fun rod. Definitely still loving it.
this is my first time being this early
Thanks for the support!
What's the name of that green net you've got on the kayak? Thanks
Just a cheap net I got from Amazon. Link here: amzn.to/3X5vwAr
Do you think it would okay to use straight 4 pound braid with no leader for panfish in stained water? How bout clear water?
I definitely think it is fine. I personally have a bit more confidence with a leader in clear water but I bet you can still catch fish just fine with straight 4lb braid.
Power pro super slick v2 is 8 strand more your speed i think you will like it better buddy
I still need to try it. I haven't seen it in less than 8lb test though.
@@FishAnything yea 8 is as low as they make it's thin enough to work tho
Love your reviews just wanted to give a word of caution I know the board isn’t going to hurt those boats, but some boat owners might have a fit if they saw that
Fair enough - I obviously am not ramming into boats but if I bump one slightly because I am drifting, I am not going to stress it. Always try to avoid bumping anything, but the reality of fishing off of small watercraft is you are going to have some of those situations. If a boat owner has a fit, we will cross that bridge when we get there (respectfully).
Great video what type of copoylmer or you using and have you ever used the Trout Magnet S.O.S.
The copolymer I use is Trilene Sensation. I still have yet to try SOS but I have heard good things.
I use this line 😅
Nothing wrong with it! Just some other options I like a bit better.
@@FishAnything I agree! I just use it cause it was what the local bait shop had in five lb braid
I should’ve just bought another roll of J-Braid instead of this… I don’t like it at all, the white color attracted me since it matched my combo, but I should’ve watched some reviews first… 😢
It is a fine line, but the J Braid is better for UL fishing.
Bro, don't be spreading secrets like this. 😭
Power pro is getting harder and harder to find at local stores due to rejects making videos about it.
