Microlino: scooter inventor revives old microcar as electric

  • Zurich entrepreneur Wim Ouboter invented the microscooter in the 1990’s as a vehicle for “microdistances”. Now he’s hoping to once again alter urban mobility with an electrified version of the classic Isetta “bubble car” as a retro-stylish, all-weather alternative to a motorcycle. “Reduce to the max is our philosophy and I would say this has a fantastic place in the mobility chain as we call it.”
The Microlino is technically not a car (so is not subject to same crash tests), but an L7e motorized quadricycle. While it tops out at 100 kph, or 62 mph, it’s meant for all those short trips we make within town, what Ouboter argues make up 90% of our auto use.
The original Isetta debuted in the 1950s when BMW wanted to provide an affordable, highly fuel-conscious vehicle for post-war Europe. The original design was created by the Italian company Iso Rivolta who licensed it to six carmakers. BMW went on to produce 160,000 Isettas, some of which are still popular among collectors today.
Ouboter’s Micro Mobility Systems debuted their electric version of the Isetta, the Microlino, at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, where they racked up 500 reservations in less than 2 weeks. Touting it as an “ideal city vehicle” and a space-saver (“3 Microlinos fit in one parking space”), the company hopes to start production in 2018 with the first vehicles priced between 8,000 and 12,000 euros.

I used to have an Isetta in the 60s and I loved it, I would definitely buy one of theses if It goes into production, I think that its biggest problem will be cost, but if they can keep the cost down so that the average person can afford it, then I think that they have a winner here...👍🏻

OMG!!!OMG!!! Do you have ANY idea how wonderful this little car will be for folks like me? I have mobility and exhaustion issues, so I have such a hard time getting anything born. This little jewel would get me safely around to most of my errands, without causing me pain or exhaustion.
The fact that this vehicle will profoundly reduce the amount of smog in cities is a huge bonus. I very much look forward to this idea rolling out in big cities.

I'd bet on this if I had money.
He has all the right ideas.
As he said two or three times 'we are not over-engineering it with things it does not need.'
It's a minimalist's tool and follows the same way of thinking that leads to people like me using a 150cc scooter to get to work, which is about 45 kilometres from home.
The people who decry it as being dangerous, if they are sincere, should also decry all two-wheeled machines and the like.
Great idea. Great design. Coming from a 'normal' car, you'd likely find this to be extremely basic. Coming from a scooter, though, people like me would find this to be quite a luxury - as I do when I use my wife's car. I use a scooter or big bike all year round, and in winter this beats the shit out of any bike IF IT'S CHEAP ENOUGH. And there lies the point, as he also mentioned.
    I love it.

Love it but the plug needs a cover otherwise road salt would corrode it very quickly and there should be the option of also having a say a Tesla, Leaf or Volt plug so you could take advantage of available public charging stations. Maybe mold a phone holder / Qi charger and bluetooth speakers and microphone as an accessory. A small tow hook and cable connectors for a extended battery pack or generator trailer would be good for long trips.

Just my two cents on the design.. Loose those big bulbous headlights and have some small but bright streamlined mirrors/indicator units instead. The main headlights could be small inset LED affairs on the main door. The back end looks high, could it not be lowered to cover the rear wheels a little more, the old BMW seems to do that. Add in a few little flairs unique to the retro-esque nature to add even more to the dinky-cute factor and it's appeal would be heightened on its aesthetic appeal alone.

Very exciting. I wish you every success. I always admired the basic design of the Isetta even though it lacked a suitable power plant, even for the day. We raise children by taking the best from the past and the present and instilling it in them, or at least attempting to. Why wouldn't the same concept work with transportation?
