    My favourite train. The 323s have such a great sound.

  • @TheSearleFamily123
    @TheSearleFamily123 Před 2 lety +40

    The actual sound itself is caused by a byproduct of how the software for the VVVF drive (using GTO thyristors as the transistor technology) has been programmed. GTO thyristors have a limit on how fast they can pulse at, meaning we need to cut out some pulses upon reaching a certain speed so that the transistors don't get overloaded. The pulse-width modulation is what causes the sound, meaning that each time pulses are removed, the sound jumps back down.
    The overhead voltage AC/DC and third rail voltage DC usually makes no difference in the motor drive package; VVVF drives pulse out artificial AC waves, meaning your motor should be an AC motor in a 3-phase configuration, or a permanent magnet motor (only if your transistor technology is not GTO). If the overhead supply voltage is AC, which will almost certainly be just one phase, then it must be converted to DC first. This step is not required if your overhead supply voltage is already DC or if you have a third rail supply.

      Why is it so much louder than the Japanese 209 that uses the same technology?

    • @TheSearleFamily123
      @TheSearleFamily123 Před rokem +1

      @@ajgyt3347 originally, the Class 323 had HOLEC 2-level GTO-VVVF, then the VVVF was renewed to Alstom and the GTO thyristors were replaced with IGBT's, but the modulation pattern and inverter programming remained the same so the sound was mostly unchanged. The JR 209 series do not use the exact same electronics; they originally had Mitsubishi 3-level GTO-VVVF.

      Aston railway station has a speed restriction of 20mph, and the drivers of these trains can't apply too much power at once as to avoid wheelspin and concern to the passengers. Put that thing straight into notch 4 without considering that and yes, it will go like a rocket.
