  • Here's my 5 tips for singing in a covers band. These are little helpful hints that i've gathered during my years singing with various cover bands.
    Hopefully they will be a tad helpful and maybe make a difference for anybody who experiences these problems we talk about in the vid.
    Feel free to comment and add any tips you may have your self, or any feedback you may have.

    Ya honestly man, thank you. Very happy to have come across this. I've been singing my entire life and as a kid fucked up my voice trying to compensate for an underwhelming male section and lost a lot of my capabilities but having taken a break from it for the past 7 years or so, I believe I'm ready now to join a band and get back on the horse. My cousin is Russel Allen so I'm sure I'll have some good guidance moving forward once I start tugging that hear but until then, I will be relying on videos like this.
    A large reason musicians think vocals don't really have much input or don't value their input is because they're not as knowledgable about music theory and such so they seem like they're talking to a child to them about things. I certainly understand and agree with what you're saying though. It certainly will be a battle moving forward to make sure the band respects my input about what I can and can't do that night or at that time. Good luck to you man.

      Is that russell allen symphony x? Now there’s a chap with a talent and knows how to do it right 👍🏼
      If a band doesnt respect you you can always leave, bands always need singers so you’ll have the chance to shop around a bit. Just set some ground rules from day one and you can always approach with the “you try singing the set and see how it feels”. If they counter with “i’m not a singer” then theres your cue to say “exactly, so therefore me being a singer, i know whats best for my voice” etc.
      Let me know how you get on dude and good luck :)

      I was going to reply to your long message but it no longer seems to appear on here? Not all singers have an easy run of it and are born great singers. A lot of us, me included had to work and continue to work to try and maintain what we have and improve. I sounded drastically different in my early days and there was no way i would have been good enough to front a band. There will always be those who put you down, so as a singer you will have to harden your skin a bit to deal with nasty people. But i really recommend finding a good singer teacher and having some lessons if you can afford it, it makes a massive difference and they can help you in all the right ways. Also if you have the facilities, record yourself as much as possible, get used to hearing your own voice on recording as soon as possible and then you can learn to craft it and shape it. I don't know if you felt your long message was too much and that's why you removed it? But don't ever feel embarrassed about your experiences and how it all makes you feel. Its all important and part of your growth as a person and a singer :)

    Absolutely sound advice...another awesome video Mike! We have a relatively new band, however, I have experienced most of these things already and I am currently working on tip #4 Being in charge of your own monitoring. A Sound Engineer friend of mine gifted me his Shure PSM300 | Wireless Transmitter (G20 Band), which was very helpful since not only can I adjust the volume level from the bodypack, but the MixMode knob on the bodypack lets me blend between two separate mixes; an instrument mix (like the guitar you spoke of) and my vocal mix. I am excited to use it! May I ask what type of 'little mixing desk' you use? I was wondering if the In-ear transmitter and the TC-HELICON Voicelive 3 would be enough, or is there another mixer you speak of? Cheers, Sue

      I used a Behringer xenyx 802. Couple of channels and cheap to buy. But then I bought one of the behringer x-air range so I could mix by wifi on my iPad, made life so much easier!

      @@Vonbeardingham Wow, that little Behringer IS inexpensive...cool. I have a Yamaha MG10XU 10 Channel Mixer with Effects, but because you can only set one effect at a time I have to buy the Voicelive 3 unit. If you bring your Voicelive 3, and your Behringer units to gigs, do you leave them both on the floor, or put them up on a music stand for easier access? I'm trying to picture how you set up all your devices since you are such a seasoned gig master, lol.

    • @Vonbeardingham
      @Vonbeardingham  Před 5 lety

      LEDFOOTE BAND lol, I put the voicelive on the floor, and just a little stand for your mixer. You are only running into your mixer one of the outputs from your pedal and maybe a line from a mic’d up guitar. Just make it easy a possible for you :)

    Great video mate thanks! A question for you, my band sings a variety of hard rock, when it comes to my vocals, should i try and emulate the voice of the original singer, or should i sing only in my natural voice?its hard for me to tell what sounds better, as i fell i sound crap no matter what😅 many thanks!

    • @Vonbeardingham
      @Vonbeardingham  Před rokem

      Great question!
      I started mimicking for that exact same reason. i never liked how i sounded and found that copying people gave my voice much more character and texture. But, ive found it has its pitfalls and issues.
      Chopping and changing your voice to suit different styles and sounds can take its toll. Ive heard several singers say this and it can be fatiguing during a gig, especially if our techniques arent quite right. Remember, a lot of the big guns from the rock scene suffered major voice damage because of bad technique so we want to try and avoid that as much as possible. I find the happy medium is to add a bit of flavour of the style, not copy completely. Use some of the nuances, pronunciations and textures without going full mimick.
      That way, its still your voice coming through, but with that familiar twang of the artist they love.
      Ive had people come up to me after shows and say “you sounded just like him”, when in fact if you were to compare myself and the recorded version there would be quite a difference. If you can capture the essence, but still be you and just use other techniques like vocal fry, different emotions and pronunciations, thats the winner for me.
      If you have a golden voice that everyone loves, great, just be you. For people like you and me, a little bit of vocal thievery can go a long way 😁

If you are good and they don't want to lose you, you have some sway and can use that to your advantage to be treated fairly and be heard. Its a sad state of affairs and we shouldn't all have to stand our ground against people with the wrong attitudes, but thats the world we live in a we dont get anything unless we know our worth x

    Hello Mike! It is me again. 😀😂
    I have a question related to this video...
    My band members picked some songs on their own - and they expect me to sing them. I told them to piss off. 😀
    I can sing some of them...but the songs that they want are relatively unknown - so I do not think that people would enjoy them so much.
    Now we have anarchy in the band. I told them if they like it that they can sing it themselves. 😄
    What to do now? Should I make compromise and try to sing those unknown songs? What is your opinion? 🤔

    • @Vonbeardingham
      @Vonbeardingham  Před 5 lety +5

      Vu Le hello mate. I had this problem quite a few years ago with a band I was in. Wanted to play songs nobody had heard and stuff that was too high or extreme for me...long story short, not in that band anymore lol.
      A lot of musicians want to play songs that THEY like rather than playing for the audience. If they want to do that, that’s their choice, but if they want to appeal to greater audiences they are kinda shooting themselves in the foot. In a covers band I ’ve always been of the school of “I’m here to entertain the audience”, so therefore I want to play whatever songs will get the most enjoyment and reaction from the crowd.
      Every musician has to know their limits and each band member respect that each member will have a skill limit. Pushing members to do things they aren’t comfortable with or can’t handle will just end up with a poor performance and sound like shit. When band members try and force a singer to sing something his voice can’t handle, give them an example of a musician that they can’t match the skill of and say “right I want to play this!”, then if they say “I can’t play that, it’s too difficult” then you can bring up the hypocrisy of them expecting you to sing things beyond your means when they bail when asked the same.
      A lot of this comes from a lack of understanding on what being a singer is. But being naive doesn’t give them a right to push you around.
      Finding decent musicians without too much ego who are willing to work together for the greater audience entertaining good is hard, but not impossible.
      If you honestly think they are too pretentious and self serving to think past their own wants in the band I’d go look for another band. That’s what I’d do personally...otherwise you’ll just be a doormat for them to wipe their musical shoes on :(

      God i share you pain with that 😖 say to them ok i want to start covering dream theater or some horrendously difficult prog and see their reaction to that! Band members need to respect each others limits. Our drummer has flare ups of pain in this hands, so if he’s suffering we’ll play some easier stuff. A band should all help each other, not demand this that and the other outside your abilities.
      Say you are more than happy for them to sing it, if they say they cant, then ask so why is that ok for them to say no, but not for you?
