I have seen, I think, the majority of you tenkara fishing videos, and I have learned a lot. I've enjoyed every single minute of them all. Absolutely fabulous job. Keep em coming 😊

Mountain whitefish are part of the Coregoninae subfamily. They're closely related to the whitefish and ciscos of the genus Coregonus, but they belong to the genus Prosopium. Grayling instead belong to the Thymallinae subfamily, probably the most basal branch of all Salmonids. It is still uncertain if Coregoninae are evolutionarily more kindred to the true salmonid (subfamily Salmoninae such as salmon, trout and char) than to grayling. Anyway, they're beautiful. How could anyone consider them as "trash fish"? Native species aren't trash!!!

Great video Tristan! Whitefish are super important for our rivers and streams around the west. Catching that fish indicates that that river is healthy.

thats awesome to know considering how much that river is exposed after the fire killed off all the cover.

If you want to catch more white fish, I know of a spot full of large chunky ones. You can also catch rainbow and cutthroat there, too.

Definitely not looked down upon hardcore trout anglers. They’re a good indicator species of a healthy system.

Thanks for sharing the experience. What a beautiful section of river. That sound of running water is so soothing.
You probably haven't caught a whitefish before because they are more of a "bottom feeder" and are usually caught on deeper-running nymphs.

I think the attitude towards whitefish depends on the reason you’re fishing - if you’re fishing for food, the whitefish is a pain and a waste of time for most people. I was that way when I was younger. But when catch-and-release fly fishing for the pure joy of fishing, I came to really enjoy the occasional whitefish. They’re just as ecologically important, and as fun to catch, as their trout brethren. Great video Tristan; that’s a really pretty stream!

Nice! I like catching whitefish now and again! My PB is 21 inches! A beast of a whitefish from the Yellowstone river in Montana! Also took an 18 that day and plenty of 12” rainbows! Oh and my favorite of the day, an 18” brown! Tight lines and no reels!!

We catch dozens of these things in northern New England. We call them dase. They are trash and steal feed from trout. We throw them in the woods for wild animals to eat.

Long before I started into Tenkara I was fishing on the Selway river in Idaho and caught a sizeable whitefish with a spin casting rig and a Mepps spinner. I had no idea what it was and thought it might have been an invasive species. With some help from nearby anglers we identified it as a mountain whitefish. Haven't caught one since. Neat experience.

Mepps and Panther Martins take me back to a time of discovery. I eventually ditched the spin gear for dry flies. Now, I've figured out how to put single barbless hooks on lures with monofilament. Not the easiest all-around, but, spinners are fun, especially when back-casting is prohibited by thick vegetation.

What a coincidence! I just caught my first whitefish here in Washington 2 weeks ago. Probably 11" or so. It seemed to have a very subtle take and at first I thought I was snagged on the bottom of the creek (was using a rainbow warrior nymph with a tungsten bead and a little lead wire I tied into it just to help get it down extra fast).

Nick Adams arrives in the burnt-over district near Seney, MI, the scene of Hemingway's "Big Two-hearted River" story:
From the time he had gotten off the train and the baggage man had thrown his pack out of the open car door things had been different. Seney was burned, the country was burned over and changed, but it did not matter. It could not all be burned. He knew that. He hiked along the road, sweating in the sun, climbing to cross the range of hills that separated the railway from the pine plains.
The road ran on, dipping occasionally, but always climbing. Nick went on up. Finally the road, after going parallel to the burnt hillside, reached the top. Nick leaned back against a stump and slipped out of the pack harness. Ahead of him, as far as he could see, was the pine plain. The burn country stopped off at the left with a range of hills. On ahead islands of dark pine trees rose out of the plain. Far off to the left was the line of the river. Nick followed it with his eye and caught glints of the water in the sun.
In that story, fishing was good, too.
