For Doom’s new console ports, the devs switched to non-trademark infringing/Geneva Convention breaking green crosses. I’ll take those over the pills any day.

I cant believe that there are actual people whos legit job is to find red crosses in video games and sue them, all of this founded by tax payers money. and not even becouse of copyright infingements, but just becouse they "shouldnt" do it becouse of the law.
I mean, I get that you shouldnt use the emblem in real life for anything other than medical studd BUT how the hell this is a problem in a video game. this is so absurd

There has been a minor shitstorm over this, as fans hated the pill, as it isn't really easily readable (half of the pill is white on white). Instead, some modern versions of the Doom wads opt for simply a GREEN cross - exactly as recognizable and commonly used, but fine with Geneva convention.
I always assumed they "got away with it" because the red cross didn't care about a 12 megabyte game in 1993 and understandably didn't see the monumental impact it would have on pop culture.
But they are not violating anything. That *is* a medkit.
Great vid! Although like you said it is a "generic" topic to cover, I enjoyed the fact it had more to it citing the case with Prison Architect, very interesting and definitely worth the 5 minutes.

I think a red circle with a white cross would look better than the pills, and better than the green cross.
I agree, that way you can keep the more noticeable red color.
Not sure if it's covered by some different trademark, but my alternative would have been to change the + to an H, which can still be rendered just as easily at the same pixel resolution.

This is one of those things that always gives me mixed feelings. On the one hand I can appreciate an organization committed to providing politically neutral medical services being very particular about how their symbols are used. It's quite literally something that could be the difference between life and death. On the other hand, however, the fact that so many people associate that symbol with medical care in general is endemic to it being so universally recognizable in the first place.
I can absolutely understand why the Red Cross would take issue with things like playable combat medics in FPS's using the symbol, as it could unintentionally make real medics wearing the symbol seem like valid targets. When it comes to its use on in game health pickups, that strikes me as being entirely in keeping with the services they provide.
Besides, Doom's heath kits are really more of a red cross on a light gray background, not white.
the versions of doom and doom 2 that i have from steam have a green and white diamond on all the health packs.
The latest release of Nookem dookem tri-dee also put pills on the medkits if I'm not misremembering.

Getting rid of the filtering is a good start, now try 800x600 software rendered, while making sure the gamma setting of your screen is fairly low. Better yet, see what the game looks like on the Doomed Speed Demos Archive YT channel, it's quite incredible.

@@trafficconememes331 Mostly not, although one thing I will amend is that even the highest resolutions render just fine in the more recent versions of PrBoom+ and its offshoots. I stand by everything else however.

1) Saint George's flag predates the Geneva Convention, therefore it's grandfathered in. Besides, it's not the same shape;
2) Tonga agreed to change its flag's shape due to the Geneva Convention;
3) Johnson & Johnson holds a trademark right to the Red Cross, once again, because the company got the right before the Geneva Conventions were ratified. It even tried to (unsuccessfully) sue the American Red Cross for trademark infringement.
