  • Weather forecast decent so decided to get out for the day. Spent a bit of time wandering the woods - the wild garlic was out early so that was a bonus treat for my sarnie! Had a chance to put up my new 3 season shelter - Six Moon Designs Gatewood Cape (nicely packed in a David Friars' modular pouch with room to spare!). A bit like a Lavvu but way better. Superlight, more functionality, more water resistant, and with an inner mozzy net. Can't wait to try it out overnight soon... was nice to be back in the woods, watching the buzzards, crows and squirrels and seeing what resources were available. Collected a ton of birch bark for firelighting and brought a load of wild garlic back too. Bonus urban cormorants on the walk back...!

    Hi Andy, glad you prompted me to come on over. Digging the graf but digging that gatewood cape more. I like six moons and have used on for years. That should serve you well. Could do with an extra tie out right at the rear center. Wow, them Cormorants are serious birds. I love em but fisherman don't. Well, take good care. All the best. Mark

      Hi Mark, thanks for watching and commenting! You are right about an extra tie out point - would give a bit of extra head space. I've seen people use magnets to attach guylines where there are no tie out points. Might have to give it a go! Yeah - I love seeing cormorants down the river (and heron) but I can see they are serious competition for the fishermen lol. Take care and all the best, Andy

      @@WoodyAndy A pleasure Andy. Yes, mate I have thought that and I haven't seen a video. I was looking for a solution. You and me both then. Give it a go eh? Yeah, Herons are serious to. Great birds - long may they be competition for the fisherman.

    Lovely video mate, awesome tent/shelter, bit out of my price range unfortunately, could do with something like that. I'm actually laying in my hammock as I type, no video this time, not in the right frame of mind. Good to see you out and about dude x

      Hi Ray - glad you managed to get out. Yeah it's pricey. I bought the Outer first and the inner a few months later to spread the cost... I'm pretty sure you could knock up something similar on a smaller budget - I used to use a German army surplus poncho when I was younger and skinter (cost me a tenner) - definitely a handy setup to have.. Enjoy your hammock time mate, hope all's well and thanks for watching as ever, all the best, Andy

    Cool video I can't belied how for on the Ramsons are at your neck of the woods. I was out Saturday and the are just starting to come through. Lords and ladies too and what a stunning plant, I believe it was used to starch fabrics in years gone by. Nuns habits is what I read. Just subbed I should be your 100th. Take care buddy atb, Garry

      Thanks Garry! Yeah really suprised to see that many this early - although there'll be a heck of a lot more to come, it really proliferates in that area. I never knew that about Nun's habits - just learning more about this plant on one of Paul Kirtley's online courses - it's definitely and interesting one! Many thanks for watching commenting and subscribing, all the best, Andy

      @@WoodyAndy It really is a beautiful plant one of my favourites although a deadly one. That sounds interesting with the online courses, nature's larder is a bit of a passion of mine. It's such an interesting topic, one where we continue to learn regardless of experience. Before covid I was running the odd small foraging workshop up in Weardale. It really is such an amazing hobby. There might be a few videos on my back catalogue that you might find interesting. We show a range of different plants there uses and occasionally cooking with them. Thake care buddy atb, Garry

    This was fascinating Andy and throws up so many question! Firstly, is that the Clifton Bridge? Secondly, is this last year, or was it this year and you've put the wrong date on the title? If it is this year, I'm even more amazed at how early the wild garlic is kicking in - it has been a very mild winter eh? And I've seen a few cormorants down at my Mum's in Devon but I don't think I've seen them perched atop trees like that - brilliant! I'm going to check out that Six Moons kit as it looks the biz. Is it a Tyvek bathtub on the inner? And I've been lucky enough to get hold of some of Mr Friars work with the bag for my new fire anchor - it's top quality. Lots of interest here, thanks so much for posting. Cheers. Rich 👍

      @WoodyAndy  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Rich! Firstly, thanks for taking the time to watch and comment - it means a lot to me having a small channel! So, some answers...! Yes, that is the Clifton suspension bridge from underneath - I walked along the cyclepath that follows the Avon gorge below Leigh Woods. Yes it is this year (friday just gone) - I didn't have space in the title to fit the whole 2022 lol! I was also very suprised to see so much garlic already out mate - I expected a few shoots. This is an area where it absolutely proliferates though so I guess that wasn't a huge amount considering! I've never seen cormorants on that section of the river before although I have seen them hang out in trees further down the Avon towards Bath and in Eastville park near the Frome. As regards the shelter, the inner is a Six Moon designs Serenity mesh tent which has a bathtub floor and a no-see-um bug net. The floor is 30D silicone coated nylon according to their website. You can set it up on it's own in fair weather if you just need midgie protection. You could very easily switch it out for a Tyvek groundsheet making it a crazily light setup. The Gatewood Cape obviously doubles as... a rain cape too although the material is so fine you'd have to be carefull strolling through woodland wearing it mind! And yes, I'm loving the Friars' pouches for organising my kit - really decent quality and materials. Thanks again for your time, all the best, Andy

      @@jhscofield7977 I've only had it for about 6 months so it'll be the latest version I guess. It has been upgraded according to the Ultralight Outdoor Gear website but no mention of the rear zipper. A mystery!
