- Today we will look at a sonnet by the 19th century poet, Christina Rossetti. It’s called ‘In an Artist’s Studio’, and has a connection with the visual arts and painting. I’ll go through the poem in detail, explaining the meaning and looking at some technical aspects such as rhyme, structure, form, and alliteration. I hope you find it interesting. I’ll also give you some background information on Christina Rossetti, her brother Dante Gabriel Rossetti and his wife Elizabeth Siddal. Hi teacher, I'm from Uruguay and I'm studying literature (in Spanish of course) but i also want to learn English literature, so that's my next career. I love sonnets... The form is perfect and it amazes me. Thanks for the video. Literature is magic and unique in all languages!
That's amazing, I also love sonnets so much that I even wrote some when I was at High School (in Spanish, since it's my native language). I hope I can read good poetry in English.
Poetry is my guilty pleasure!😊Thank you for the lecture, Gill!
No need to feel guilty about it ;-)
Poetry is awesome and can be really powerful!

Thanks Madam for Your lessons for all the year, we are looking forward for them in the new year too. Merry Christnas and happy new years ahead Dear Madam Gill. Greetings from Turkey.
Thanks a lot. The lesson is great. The best to you.
Hello, thank you so much for all that you do. Peace and blessings onto you. 😇🙏💌
Thank you so much 🙏🙏
You teach in very polite fully 🙏🙏
Gil, you give so much enlightment to us, I truly want to hug you, thank you very much ma'am. Here in Brazil, we have popular poets called 'cordelistas' ('cordelists', maybe in English, I guess) and they say that when the phrase ends with a not precise semi vowel that the poem has the 'broken foot' - that poem is made with a 'broken foot' rhym. That also occuors when the poem don't fallows exatally the sylabic metric. But, those poems have beauty and porpuse too in their own way. Ah, just a tiny contribution: a sestet is composed by two tercets. Sorry for any error in that writting.
Thank you so much for your passion and all the depth you go into with the topics.🙏
When I am dead, my dearest,
Sing no sad songs for me;
Plant thou no roses at my head,
Nor shady cypress tree:
Be the green grass above me
With showers and dewdrops wet;
And if thou wilt, remember,
And if thou wilt, forget.
I shall not see the shadows,
I shall not feel the rain;
I shall not hear the nightingale
Sing on, as if in pain:
And dreaming through the twilight
That doth not rise nor set,
Haply I may remember,
And haply may forget.
Very very amazing session . You are a great teacher. Many thanks
Although Pre-raphaelist paintings are my favorite, this is the first time that I listen to a poem.
Thank you teacher for your lessons with reflection, your patience, you are the best 🌸💕😙 Happy Holiday and Happy new year 🌞
Gill, you are such an inspiration to me! Thank you for your lovely work!
Thanks Gill for the incredible video.
The line: That mirror gave back all her loveliness
I think mirror here is a metaphor for canvas because mirrors never lie and reflect your image as you are. Only a canvas with the help of an artist can give back her long-lost beauty.
The model in the poem has left behind her youth and the artist has done his best to defy time and its pulverizing force.
Well probably there was a mirror just to enhance her body, multiply the image or give light to the canvas. We have to be aware that glass, mirror or metal was used throughout the history of painting in order to show the reflection of self portraits and painting. In one of the picture of the Dutch painter Vermeer (the anonimous art genius) we can see the reflection of the girl taken music lessons.
Hello Gill, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from me in India! It is not a wonder then, the very famous poet was also known for her Christmas carols - In the Bleak Midwinter , being one of them. Thank you for bringing uo Chrisyina Rosette. Very captivating indeed.

I am a French student studying English at college and I wanted to thank you for everything you do. It helps me a lot, either to improve my English skills or for my studies. We are currently studying Poetry in Literature, and I struggled with this topic. Thank you :)
My lovely teacher, I'm so grateful for this perfect lesson of English literature! Thank you!
Wonderful Gill .... May GOD bless you for all good English courses you gave to pubic.... I wish I can speak your accent fluently ....
My favourite English painters are John William Waterhouse and John William Godward. Their artworks depict scenes from the daily life and mythology of ancient Greece/ancient Rome. Arthurian legends are also a subject matter of Waterhouse's paintings.
I have been working in the education sector for a long time. I still come back to Gill's channel regularly. She is a great teacher not only for students but also for teachers.
Many thanks Gill, that was marvelous. 👍
Really I enjoyed a lot with the lesson and also the unique way you taught as always.
I'm interested in poems a lot, and I was really surprised when I found out that what a small world we have because we have similar rules in our poems in Persia.

Could the 'mirror' be the painting itself because her beauty is reflected in it.He didn't look at her as she is ,with flaws and all, but as a perfect damsel of his dreams.
I'm sitting for finals and this video has been very useful. I enjoyed it a lot. Thanks! 😄
Merry Christmas from Germany 🇩🇪 ❤
It's pretty interesting poem. Thanks.
Dear Ma'am Gill ,
Wish you and your family a Merry Christmas ! 🧑🎄
You are a wonderful English teacher !
God bless you !✋
😃
Ma'am Gill,
Here,in the poem 'ln An Artist's Studio' by Christina Rossetti, you have shown the ryhming scheme of a sonnet which is very useful to the students of English literature and i liked the explanation of the poem as well !
Ma'am,i feel, this poem has some resemblance with the poem 'My Last Duchess' by Robert Browning, though that is not a sonnet, but the subject of the poem is almost the same !
Thank you so much !😃
Lovely

Merry Christmas Gill! Steve from Rose Bruford xx
Hi Steve - wishing you the same :-)
“Quatrain” is probably from Italian (!) “quartina” (“quattro” =4).
Thanks so much madam
Love you
