EASY C6 Corvette clutch fluid replacement - The Ranger Method

  • This is commonly known as the "Ranger Method" for replacing/cleaning the clutch fluid in Corvettes. It should apply to C5/C6's.
    The car is a 2005 Corvette Z51 - LS2/M6 (T56)
    Below is the link to "Rangers" website that I read about before performing the job. Highly recommended considering the alternative is a major PITA, and this procedure worked perfectly.

    At the time of filming, the Corvette had the following mods:

    I just did this on my car but surprisingly I only had to do it once, considering how low and dark the fluid was before I changed it lol

    I just bought a C6 and the fluid is brown not black. But good to know this is an easy method

    gonna have to do this to my c6 tmrw reservoir is almost empty who knows where the fluid went, suffering from sticky pedal where its developed a dead zone after it bites and wont depress the rest of the way, also magically cant go into reverse ill update after im done (i will absolutely forget about this comment)

    Hey i did it with my C6 ZO6 until the clutch fluid is clean but after one normal and short drive it comes black again , is that normal or i should consider other problem ?

      If it comes back that quickly, I would try flushing it again. This procedure isn't a "fix", but should probably be considered normal maintenance.
      If your car has a lot of miles on it with this never being done, it might take quite a few fluid changes to get things clear for a while.

    Is this C5/C6 only? It sounds like this should work with almost any m/t at least the concept of filling and cycling as you presented.

      Hexotic Ace Funny you asked that. I was thinking the same thing last night when I was doing it.
      I realize it's not the "correct" way to do it, but it definitely worked. I don't see why it wouldn't work on any other hydraulic clutch system.

    I did this today on my C6 ZO6, and it wasn't very dirty to begin with.....It only took about two or three cycles to get fully clean. I decided to try it because my clutch pedal was getting stuck after high RPM shifts, but sadly when I went to try it again it only shifted well once on a high rpm shift. After that it started sticking on high rpm shift. What would your advice for the next troubleshooting step be??

      Man, I would think you could bleed it again after driving it for awhile. How's the fluid look? Changing the fluid helps, but isn't a cure all to the woes of the manual c6 haha.
      Some people remove the clutch pedal assist spring to aid in clutch pedal feel and action. Maybe that would be a good "free" step to take next.

      @@Greenlightfilming I have off work tomorrow so I'll probably do that just to see if it helps, worth a shot lol! Did the ranger method again the other day, and fluid looked clear and gold colored already but I went ahead and did 2 more "cycles" until it was absolutely brand new. Still having same issue though

      @@nickadkins7765 man that sucks. At least you can rule out the fluid being dirty. That is a solid place to start.
      I'd wonder if you could remove the clutch assist spring under the dash as a good next step. I never did it on my c6 but read a lot of people doing it and it improving the numb pedal feeling and allegedly helping the pedal not stick to the floor.

      @@Greenlightfilming doesn't stick to the floor, it just gets hung up near the top on a high rpm shift

      @@nickadkins7765 hmm, that's strange. I wonder if you have a real mechanical issue then (obviously) haha. I would have to think on that one.

    mine had some nasty chunky crap at the bottom which I wasn't thrilled about, but wasn't quite as dark as yours.

      Oh ish. Mine might have had some sediment and small bits in it but it wasn't "chunky" haha

    I only had a few hundred miles on my new 2010 GS and my fluid was black...the Ranger Method did the trick. GM refuses to deal with this issue because they SUCK !

    So how did this turn out for you? I did it on my C6 Z06 and ran into more issues. probably not common but I did.

    Wait, what exactly did you do after taking out the black fluid? Did you pour in the new fluid and then pump the clutch 30 times and then take out the fluid again? Lol

      Yes, you dispose of the old fluid that was removed. Add new brake fluid, cycle the fluid through the system by pumping the clutch pedal, remove the diluted fluid and repeat. It will eventually become clear.

      🤔 I was thinking the same thing! He did a lot of camera cuts and skipped the steps of actually showing what was being done in order.
