Seeing today’s prices and last year prices makes me sick to my stomach. That was such a crazy ride last summer. 😭
There were so many people calling it a pump and people just called them stupid. It was such a clear pump and dump and anyone who fell for it and fomo bought deserved to learn the lesson the hard way. Especially if they never bought Japanese cards ever before the hype was surrounding them. Every collector falls for this trick some way or another and its good to learn the lesson early into collecting. I was calling this whole movement for what it was day 1 as I fell for this during 2020 but luckily only fomo bought a few cards at that time before I came to my senses and treated the market as a true market. Parabolic movements will always come back down to reality.
Oh man what a trip - Japan is my number one holiday I've had, but never got the time to go card hunting. Nice to see this video. Got a few international trips on our channel coming up too

Visited Japan in April and loved the videos you made, they were a great reference point. Went to Nagoya (from Osaka) to have dinner with my best friend, but didn't get a chance to check out Toreca Camp. Kicking myself over that but there's always next time! i love the e series so much. when i started collecting in 2020, that was what i ended up focusing on. i was able to find most of my chase cards when they were much cheaper, and graded most in psa 10.

I couldn’t believe the price on PSA 9’s when I was there, agree with you that they were almost on clearance.
yep i went to tokyo last month and i think i saved my flight back to japan just by buying slabs/cards for 15-80% off. not every card and not every card shop is an amazing discount that's what's fun about card shopping/hunting in japan. contrary to this video, if i owned a pokemon shop i would definitely fly to japan and buy stuff to sell outside of japan. i think that's what pokemon steven does , it makes sense if you have a good eye for the pokemon card market
Yup if I was a card store owner or even a reseller online, I would fly to Japan enjoy some time off and buy a major amount of inventory to sell. Only down side is there seems to be less Japanese collectors in the states than what you would think so selling online is the best way to move product. I visit many card shops in my state and Japanese barely moves.

I was in Japan a few months ago and bought a ton of cards. Akihabara is the obvious place to shop but I actually bought a lot more at Denden Town in Osaka. The latter is smaller but more condensed so it was easy to pop in and out of stores more quickly.

I was in Japan back in January and there was such a plethora of singles, but no sealed product to pick up. But I experienced anytime I wanted to pick up Pikachu promos, they would only let me get no more than 2 of one card. Prices were a little high, especially on Akihabara area, but we got an insane exchange rate for US to Yen so it made up for it. Love watching Japanese card shop videos. Good stuff
Wish I had seen this before I went to Japan last year. Trying to buy product was actually quite difficult so many stores didn't have stock.

Hi Jluv! What store in Tokyo would you say has the biggest selection of graded cards at good prices?
What's the logistics of buying a bulk order of stuff in the store? Do you just have to "sumimasen" then point to every cabinet? Or is there a better way of getting everything?
I was in Japan summer 2023, found some great deals with yellow sticker of older foils. Some white edges and some slight scratches, didn't mind. Came back with a round 2 kilos of cards XD
I did however go through the bins, got some great foils for around 300-500 yen each. Had a blast. But like Jluv says, it's only worth if you have some time to spend.

Even though you can find true bangers in the bulk boxes, depending on whiwh store the cards are LP even when looking at modern. Therefore you should invest time into it if you are on very low budget and if you have enough time !

Where about in Japan (what city or town) would you recommend going to, to get the best deals as far as pricing goes? Im sure they price everything based on tourism, knowing that tourists come looking to purchase cards.
honestly though i paused at 2:22 and the booster box prices are higher than even the Japanese msrp price. so even the japanese stores are rising prices now

When I rejoined in 2020-1, I learned about Vending and found an ebay seller that sold most of those singles for $1-3. Now, those same cards are listing at $6-12. I still have 10 or so left on my list, but price memory has kept me from ordering them now. Seems rising tides have lifted all boats, indeed.

I got back from Japan 3 weeks ago. The card shopping was insane!!! I couldn’t believe how cheap some of the alt arts were etc. ended up buying way more cause who knows when ill go back. Maybe next year tbh… 😂 but one thing i loved is im a big fan of normal pokemon full arts, ex/gx/V and they r so cheap there. Like i got gengar minikyu gx full art mint no damage for £6!! I had an absolute blast

Oh man I just got back from Japan and I'm missing it sooooooooooooooooooooo much already. How much time would you normally spend in one store? For me, if it's a small one probably 30 mins but if it's a big one, anywhere between 2-3 hours. I like to be able to appreciate cards/products where I would either barely or never see in Australia and also do price scouting for what to buy and put in the binder. The other thing I'm gonna miss the most about Japan is opening a booster box a day at such an affordable price, literally never felt so privileged 😂

pokeca-chart.com gives you the best coverage across card-rush (online retailer) and mercari (free market) - though it can be tricky to navigate if you don't understand japanese. it's pretty straight forward though so you should be OK! thanks for watching!

@@okJLUV Thought I would bother you one more time for help. Have you found any good website that helps you track your Japanese collection? I know GetCollectr is one good one. But it doesn't help notify you of like ups and downs of a card, unless you manually monitor (unless I'm mistaken).

Graded a Japanese Moonbreon with a yellow sticker in Tokyo, sent it to PSA for grading and got a 10 :)

I had visited Japan this past November/October - not really a fan of Pokemon per say, though I spent a fair share of time in these stores when I had gone. Prices being cheaper in-stores for other TCG/CCG's hold true as well. I had bought a number of vintage MTG cards for my Old School 93/94 deck, overall saved roughly $12000 at Akihabara alone in comparison to buying through popular marketplaces online. I could've gone purely for the purpose of buying the cards and it'd have been cheaper for me, including flights/accommodation costs.

Damaged cards are better anyway in my opinion. That markdown in those Japanese stores had cards from like 1000 yen down to like 200 yen just because it was damaged. So not only are damaged cards cheaper, but they also hold a lot of history that's genuinely feels great to hold.

Pokemon TCG is literally the biggest scam of all TCGs, if you're a collector. There's no way around it.
They print way too much for the cards to have any real value. The IP is keeping the game afloat, but it is such a bad bet.
I recently changed from pokemon to another tcg and the difference is so big. In terms of stress, actual fulfilment on getting the cards, the state of the market, the ease of selling, etc etc.
The pokemon market is filled with bad actors already, and recent overly shiny, overpriced, overprinted cards, tingled my senses and I ran away.
Don't be fooled, the Japanese market will sink you lower than the english one, even if it sounds weird and completely wrong.
What’s bad about getting the cards you want. I don’t think a card game for kids should be gate keeping any card. Just because they are available doesn’t mean they are that easy to get either. I don’t see any problem with an easier access other than investors not getting money back and they are not the main narrators of the community.
What does IP stand for
@@User-zl9pj Intellectual Property, in this case meaning the name/brand "Pokemon". They are basically saying the game is only successful cause its Pokemon, not because the game or cards are good. Yet, we already saw decades in which this wasn't true.
