My Exploding Boiler Delayed Ignition Flame Rollout Testing Gas Pressure

  • My boiler has an ignition issue which causes an occasional backfire/ exploding on start up. This was happening I noticed when I moved in the ignition problem. It would spark at times longer than it should. Yet always fire up and come on. Therefore I ignored this and continued getting the house ready to move in. One day I was by the boiler and witnessed a backfire and flames came out from under the boiler about 1-1/2 feet in front of the boiler. I couldn't replicate. It kept lighting up. The next day I decided I would test gas pressure. Then do a good boiler service which video will be published soon. I need to verify I have good gas pressure in and out of my gas valve to burners. I test the boilers had pressure with my Magnehelic gauge and digital fieldpiece odometer.

    I knew it wouldn't take long for you to start servicing that boiler. It's from the early 90's? About 25 years old? Ah, the joys of home ownership. Your doing a good job getting the new house ready for your family.

    Saw something similar from a unit where the heat exchanger coils were all full of soot. I know that this boiler was big enough that when it was first started it would literally rain inside of the boiler when it started to come up to temp. It's really weird when it happens though. My best guess is that when that would happen it would get some soot going and that ended up depositing on the coils plugging them up.
    I didn't own the building but helped with some of the stuff when there were issues. I had actually moved and got a call from the owner begging for help to try and figure it out. Drove an hour to help because the building was basically without heat at that point.

    Haha gotta love exploding gas appliances. Happened to me once on a reznor unit while I was 30ft up on a scissor lift. Scared the hell out of me 😂. Maintenance guy had replaced the gas valve, had the gas turned way to high, and had cracked the gas pipe just after the threads on the outlet of the GV. Neglected to tell me anything about any of that, just that it was having problems. I flipped it on and that thing managed to rollout far enough to light the gas on the cracked gas line. Learned some lessons that day. 🤣

    Gas pressure in the lines is still low at 4.6", I would adjust that outdoor regulator to about 7" wc. Gas pressure in the system should really be in the range of 6-8" wc at all times for gas valves to open, close, and regulate properly. Low input gas pressure can cause the gas valve to open too slowly and that might be the cause of your flame out because the gas velocity is too low in the venturi.

    • @dumboyoyo5245
      @dumboyoyo5245 Před 3 lety

      Half of your statement is true. According to the video, his input pressure is 5.6, and output 3 something or 4 something. If nothing else inside the house is on, he shouldn't have an issue (if his broiler is at the end of the line.) Usually most appliances use between 3-5 pressure. Of course, 5.6 before appliances thru out the whole house is low.

    Nothing beats a mechanical (analog) gauge to see rises and falls whether it’s pressure , temperature, voltage , current , etc. A digital meter simply cannot display fast enough to accurately show subtle changes.

      I learned that years ago troubleshooting a gas gun on an oil boiler converted to gas. pressure switch was 0.15"w.c. my digital missed the fluctuations. I condemn the pressure switch. replace the same thing. put Magehelic saw functions, open-air baffle, no more pressure switch problems. Digital is good when just checking pressure.

      I have that problem now, I replaced the bad igniter and put in the new one, and now the oven makes a loud bang and slightly opens the oven door. It only does that at the beginning of the preheat once the oven is up to temperature. It’s like the oven is turning to gas on too early before the igniter has a chance to get hot enough!

    • @dumboyoyo5245
      @dumboyoyo5245 Před 3 lety

      delayed ignition happen when the port of the burner near the ignitor or pilot is clogged, or just build up white ash that pushing gas away from the flame for a second. With that much of gas come out, a slight delay will cause flash back like that. Unless you upgrade the board with spark assist (which include flame sensor) Which cost money. A simple cleaning at the burner and pilot head its all required. Most tech out there trying to make small issue looks big to put in the sell that's all.
      In this case, he does his own work just to get experience I guess. Which perfectly fine. That's how we learn back in the old days. We play around with stuffs up to gain knowledge. Knowledge ain't cheap most of the time.

I've run across that a couple of times this past season where the pilot was delayed ignition because the guy before me used that little 1/8th line and it needed a bigger one, and another where they doped the fuck out of the ferrule and it ended up causing a partial blockage.

    Never adjust the gas pressure at the service regulator on the meter manifold,there could be another issue like a plugged or restricted regulator vent,or a problem internally.Call the utility company,they will change the regulator.We have had people turn up pressure on regulators and when an ice plugged vent melts you now have over pressure to the appliance regulators inside.

    • @dumboyoyo5245
      @dumboyoyo5245 Před 3 lety

      Wouldn't the ice plugged the vent regardless what the actual pressure? If you (know what you are doing, and how doing it) adjust the pressure, then the pressure just goes up to the right pressure (without damaging it). Sure, to be safe call the utility company out and fix the issue. But yes they come out and adjust it without replacing the new one. Nothing come out from manufacturer perfectly. Reason why there are tech whom know what they are doing to fix the issue.

    • @jamesdte91
      @jamesdte91 Před 3 lety +1

      I worked for a gas utility for 25 years,it was extremely rare to adjust a residential service regulator.The usual problem was low gas pressure from a variety of internal problems or the vent.By cranking the regulator down to get more pressure without knowing you don’t have something else going on is risky.Another issue was people turning the gas service valve (at the meter manifold) on too fast and damaging the diaphragm,especially in cold weather.There is usually a sticker on the meter warning of tampering with utility equipment,why risk it,come back after the gas co.gives you 7”WC from the reg.
