    Organic Chemistry on Khan Academy: Carbon can form covalent bonds with itself and other elements to create a mind-boggling array of structures. In organic chemistry, we will learn about the reactions chemists use to synthesize crazy carbon based structures, as well as the analytical methods to characterize them. We will also think about how those reactions are occurring on a molecular level with reaction mechanisms. Simply put, organic chemistry is like building with molecular Legos. Let's make some beautiful organic molecules!
    About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

    There is a methyl group attached the the benzene ring, that's why its called toluene.. :)

    Why is the first compound 4-phenylheptane when the substituent is benzene??

    • @kialuvsyoo
      @kialuvsyoo Před 4 lety

      Because when benzene acts as a substituent, it's called phenyl. This is why people hate chemistry. "Heres a compound. It's called X. In this context, it's called Y. In this other context, it's called Z. And then in this other other context, it's called itchybutt. None of these names have anything to do with each other. Good luck!"

    what is the iupac name of styrene and acetophenone ?

  • @mamamiaherewegoagain6959

    3:04 what if there only 4 carbons (butyl) connected to the benzene ring. And it's connected in one of the middle carbons.

  • @samcha1718
    @samcha1718 Před 8 lety

    Hmmm so benzoin acid is just OOH? Not COOH? Help I'm sooo confused

    • @prestonstanley3140
      @prestonstanley3140 Před 8 lety

      it is COOH but the C atom isn't drawn because it is assumed to be generally known to be double-bonded to O and single-bonded to H. You could draw C bonded to O and H if you want. Either way, it's correct.

    • @prestonstanley3140
      @prestonstanley3140 Před 8 lety

      besides, the C in dot structures (much like in skeletal structures) of benzene derivatives are represented by the vertices of the hexagon or lines. Refer the first video on benzene for more info.
