  • Most would expect to come across fish and crabs at Driftwood Beach in the Chesapeake Bay, but one Maryland man and his son caught a 7-foot-6-inch alligator, killed it, and they're now eating it for dinner.

      The Chesapeake bay is one of the largest shark pupping grounds in the world. They come in and have their babies and they grow to several feet before heading out to open ocean.
      The have even been caught within a few miles of DC in the Potomac River, look it up.

    Would it have been able to survive icy waters or 3 to 4 months of frigid winter, probably better to be shot than freezing to death. Cold blooded animals can thermo regulate and as they try to hibernate, their brain expands as ice builds up inside; then they slowly die. I read that in Reptile Magazine years ago, the story was about people putting reptiles in freezers as euthanasia instead of paying for a vet. This news story made me remember that story.

      Exactly. No coincidence that gator just happened to be released and only live and thrive possibly going on two decades lol. That happens to be the northernmost cypress swamp in US? Well somebody didnt tell the gator he is not supposed to survive there. No matter if was dumped years ago or migrated north. Obviously it can live there and at some point in relative recent historical timeline did. It does appear from just examining it from pic,that it likely wild born and mostly likely from Tidewater of area VA vicinity.With the much slower growth rate at that tip of northen range,its almost guaranteed it was around six feetish,with abundant forage and some mild winters mixed in going well over a decade about 2 ft of growth is on target to the northern range specimans. Its the typical size of gator that migrates a decent distance due to its " tweener" size in search of more forage and less competiton for it from other gators. Get 50-100 miles upriver past where any others live. Makes sense he had that area too himself and did well. Plus around 4ft is the length the most pets gets dumped. Most people realize,they better get him out now before he grows another foot or two and I got a f@#king problem here lol.So that makes odds of pet release more unlikely.That was a wild gator at no matter.Ole boy kind a got away with one. Lil sad,but I see the motivation and general opinion that seems to be very majority opinion in Va/MA area that most don not want them there.Seems like a solid guy,if he had good evidence it was preying on pets and other locals were aware of issues and the fact it was almost 8ft and again was moving up into another size range that was gonna likey on track to get close to 10ft bull gator size and become a legit threat to prey on humans. That area has option to keep itself gator free. Eventually a few more would move up and at some point possibly out of several attempts have a successful breeding one year.All things considered if it had one breed a decade as only pair in territory over decades that mean a couple of gators at most make to even juevinile status.The territory is limited to how much capacity for a population. Its the tip of spear.They dont have any option for even short range exspansion. North of Lusby night temps really take a nosedive. So if you choose when a new settler comes from VA you eliminate it and you can stay gator free

    • @riverpirate1022
      @riverpirate1022 Před rokem

      Gators have not and cannot live in Va in hundreds if not thousands of years.
      They also cannot live in salt water; it will eventually kill them.

    Yes Alligatordoes taste good it’s a white meat and doesn’t have much of a fishy or wild game taste I grew up inSouth Florida and lived for 25 years inMaryland people get Gators as pets when they are small but are surprised at how large and fast they grow then can not care for the Animal Unfortunately Alligators raised that way are a serious threat to people i their areas because they associate people with food instead of fearing them Florida has strict rules about Feeding them to prevent them from getting that way as they will become a Nuisance Alligator and begin planning attacks on children and Animals inthe area they live in The Chesapeake Bay isn’t a nviorment Alligators would be happy living in as they do like small animals to eat as well as fish but I don’t think the fish population is high enough for a Gator to keep themselves adequately fed That’s why Gators thrive inthe Florida Everglades because of the high amount of Fish,Snakes ,and Wild Boar and birds it als has lots of Marshy lands that allow Gators to hunt from the water and surprise attack it’s Prey on land the Bay has a Shoreline of course but a Gator would need to relearn his / her natural instincts of hunting in that enviorment the local man did the right thing and wound up with a decent amount of good food to eat for free
