They Are Preserving Appalachian Traditions on YouTube (True Grit: Appalachian Ways)

  • Meagan and Andy have deep roots in the Appalachian mountains. They started sharing their farming to CZcams and have found a new drive for what they do and why they are doing it. They want to keep traditions alive, ones that would completely disappear if only one generation decided to do something else. They eat 80% of their food from their own homestead and share any extras with their neighbors, friends, and family. But they are building a new community through their CZcams channel where they can treat strangers like neighbors and share what they can. ‪@TrueGritAppalachianWays‬

Y'all have to know y'all are my favorite channel (my favorite you tube family). You are so honest and real. I so appreciate that you don't put the fear of this world on your videos, and that you leave out the politics. I've actually stopped watching some channels that I have watched for years for going down the "gloom and doom" road, and it breaks my heart, because I come to you tube to get away from that. I've had gardens, pigs, chickens, bees and rabbits for years, and watching channels like yours teaches me knew things with each video you post. Thank you so much for that, and I adore you guys!

I just recently found Megan & Andy. I have binge watched their past videos since finding them. I grew up doing the life they are living. I do what I can now. We only have 3 1/2 acres and not all of it is usable. We are getting chickens this spring and I always garden. But, the soil here is poor and I have had to do it in raised beds. But seeing how they have improved their soil using the chickens gives me hope. I have to do it all on my own because my husband is not able to because of his health conditions. He will be 61 in July and I will turn 56 in June. I love this couple because they are so genuine and down to earth.

    • @BreakingNewRoots

We are fans of theirs as well! They are just very real which seems like an odd thing to say, but we know not everyone on the internet can keep to their true selves. Chickens will improve the soil drastically! When we farmed for 6 years, chickens was the biggest factor to improving our soil! We appreciate you watching and hope your garden and chickens all do well this year!

They are able to live the lifestyle that I would love to live, but I can't so I watch them and they encourage me to do what I can, as much as can on my little (big) half acre.
Yall remind me of my Maw and Paw. I'm 62 this year, and yall bring me so much joy to watch. ❤
I would love to come help you dress your chickens out so I can learn how to do it...maybe some day. I live in North Georgia, a little town called Chickamauga. You might have heard about it from the Civil War times.
Yall keep on , keeping on and enjoying your little family and farm and I'll keep watching and being blessed by yall!❤❤❤❤

I found Megan and Andy about a year ago, by accident, and they are now my favorite channel. I watched 7 or 8 of their videos yesterday-some I had previously viewed. I live in NC and grew up with my daddy growing a huge garden and giving away food to friends. We always had chickens (and eggs, of course). We didn’t can much but we stored enough potatoes for the whole winter and froze about 300 ears of corn every year. We even had a few hogs when I was a teen. I always helped harvest but wish I had paid more attention to planting and caring for the food. I learn from Megan & Andy. Thanks for featuring them. (One note: they seldom , if ever, ask for a like & subscribe. And still, their channel is growing. They deserve it!) I just subscribed to your channel. Keep finding the good ones!

The reason I like your videos is because it reminds me of the old times. The hog killings and people looked forward to em. I remember pressing the cooking the cracklings making lard. Just how much better the food was back then. We took it for granted. I asked my Grandma one time why did she can and put up when she didn’t have to any more. She was very religious and she told me the first year her and my Granddaddy got married they had a bad crop and it was during the depression and she told me she almost starved that winter and she made deal with the good lord if he would give her the strength she would never be hungry again. That really touched me. She told me her Daddy lost two farms during the depression and had the money to pay the taxes but the bank wouldn’t give it to them and he never got over it. He was a bitter man the rest of his life.

Love your videos & the pig butchering one! I've been wanting to raise piglets for butchering & want to butcher my own. After watching your hog butcher, I actually went on FB Marketplace & found a scalding vat in KY, they said they would even haul it 300 miles to me, in MO! I don't know that I'll be able to get it, I may go another route and do a barrel type for scalding, but it was cool finding it. I love the old ways, and keeping those old traditions alive. We were homesteaders in the 70's, raised all our own food, pretty much, like y'all do. It wasn't the cool thing to do back then, like it is now, lol. It was hard but I've realized that I learned so much from all that, and it's helped to start my own little homestead a couple years ago. Thank y'all & God bless!

I grew up country in the Pacific Northwest. We did have electricity most of the time but in addition to the wood stove for heat in the living room we also had a small trash urner in the kitchen for cooking when there was a power outage. When the power went out it was short if it lasted less than 24 hours with a 2-3 week long outage happening a couple times per year.
We had water in the house but were one of the few in our area that still had to depend on an outhouse.
I grew up eating things like kidney stew, head cheese and tongue sandwiches, beef cheeks, liver fried in bacon grease with onion and wild mushroom gravy, green beans cooked up with tomatoes, onions, garlic with a chunk of bacon end, dandelion greens sprinkled with vinegar and on and on. Was in third grade when i first tasted store bought bread and i was in middle school when tasted a store bought marshmallow for the first time.
Had lye soap, a wringer washing machine and a clothesline for a dryer. We grew/raised or foraged almost all of the food we ate. We did buy a gallon of mustard a year but grandma made ketchup, mayonnaise and butter and mom did all the canning. In addition to tradditional farm meats the brothers hunted so we had venison and an occassional bear as well as some squirrel and frog legs from them sneaking down to Schmidt's pond at night.
I married a city boy and at first marveled on the instant life city provided. But when i had kids they had no understanding of that lifestyle and with encouragement from their father made fun of the backwards life i came from. They have never tasted mist of the foods i grew up with and when i did make lye soap they referred to it as "mom's" soap and would only use the store bought version. By the time i realized what they were missing out on they had bought into the belief that that lifestyle was too backwards for them. Lost to a generation.

I keep our pantry stocked full and our freezers too. HOWEVER, we are moving over 700 miles away so we decided to eat through our stock and not garden this year cause we had so much going on and house showings and such. With that being said, we are just now having to start buying things from the grocery store. It floored me that it costed me over $15 to buy butter, bottle of oil, and small bag of flour. Then this week we had to buy 2 wks worth of meat to get us buy till we close on the house and head on to Tennessee....flabbergasted at the cost! Cant wait to get our new place up and running as we will be adding livestock too. Plus will have farmers to buy from too.

I feel you on that!! We are getting ready to settle down and find a farm of our own and some of that decision is the price of groceries! We just cannot afford to pay these prices much longer!!

I enjoyed getting to know ya’ll a little bit because our life styles are so much alike. I understand wanting to live away from the worldly world. I don’t want the outside coming into our little world. By the way we live in Smithville Oklahoma in the mountains. But not far from here is a place that tourism has taken over and it saddens my heart because it was so beautiful but is nothing but a tourist area now and is slowly creeping into our area. We always lived so far behind everyone else and we love it that way especially in such a fast paced world that we live in. Thank you for sharing.

He left me his cabin and my brother lives there. The power went out for two weeks and my brother was crying because he couldn’t cook and make coffee. I asked him how we were raised in the same house, I’m like you have a cast iron skillet, Dutch oven, you got chili, chicken and dumplings, cherry pie, peach cobbler, and so much more. ,

In my corner of Missouri I can put money down on a hog or cow and that animal becomes MY animal in a sense. They are raising it for me. I was born in Silva . We moved to Washington when I was 3 . The area i grew up until I was 12 was 5 miles the way the crow flies to mt st helens before it erupted. It took my dad 1 1/2 hours to drive to work . We got electricity when I was 9 . Before that , we hauled our water in buckets . As a kid , I was in heaven .
I have lived all over the usa thru the years . I decided to settle in Idaho in 2013 because property was fairy cheap . And also the hunting , fishing and trapping was still good .
Last time I went to n.c. to visit family was 1988. It has been awhile . Seems like I am related to half the state . Brooms, Kirkpatricks, Owens, Harris, Galloways and more .
