He Scaled His Farm Back and Doubled Profits (Wild Harmony Farm)
Ben has found the sweet spot for regenerative farming. When he was told to diversify to make profits, he became burnt out and ready to throw in then towel. But he didn't want to quit so he found what wasn't working and cut it out. He made his way down from 12 species to 2. Focusing on only pigs and cattle has allowed him to find revolutionary ways of raising these animals for more profit with less work.

The late Alan Nation, editor of Stockman Grass Farmer, intro'd the idea at one of their grazing classes to have ONE core centerpiece business and then a couple fewer temporary/seasonal/short term enterprises. If the enterprises can mutually benefit the other all the better. Ex. Cattle graze down a field partially (& leave manure) then poultry (seasonal turkey?) follow several days later and scratch through the manure pats just as the fly larvae develop. Turkey manure, enhanced by store bought feed, provide high quality fertilizer for the grass Cattle are permanent centerpiece while turkeys are a "put & take" enterprise. Buy them in late spring/process for thanksgiving. 5-6 months and then they're off the property. You dont even need to have turkeys every year ...switch to feeder pigs occasionally. Back & forth

The reason I like your videos is because it reminds me of the old times. The hog killings and people looked forward to em. I remember pressing the cooking the cracklings making lard. Just how much better the food was back then. We took it for granted. I asked my Grandma one time why did she can and put up when she didn’t have to any more. She was very religious and she told me the first year her and my Granddaddy got married they had a bad crop and it was during the depression and she told me she almost starved that winter and she made deal with the good lord if he would give her the strength she would never be hungry again. That really touched me. She told me her Daddy lost two farms during the depression and had the money to pay the taxes but the bank wouldn’t give it to them and he never got over it. He was a bitter man the rest of his life.

Thank you so much for the interview with Joel and hearing all about his success. My dream was always to have a small farm/ homestead. My husband wanted nothing to do with that. He was a fireman and his interest was always rebuilding vintage cars. When his parents bought some property in Oregon upon their retirement, they had more land then they could handle and eventually started selling off some of it. His dad asked my husband if he wanted to purchase the remaining portion connected to their home. I saw that farm and my husband saw a place to build his barn/workshop for his toys. My father in-law saw someone to care for them in old age. We said yes, because the plan worked out for all of us. Prior to this we’d spent our summer vacations camping on their property and getting to know all the neighbors. So we built his barn/workshop first then the year my husband retired from the fire dept we put our house in California on the market and built our new home on the property. We moved to Oregon, the following Autumn. Twenty years latter I’ve planted an eighteen fruit tree orchard, have a flock of chickens and two gardens. My husband has a collection of cars to tinker with, my mother in-law is still living and we are all happy.

As usual, well done! A very informative discussion that addresses all the "things" about doing this type of business. I like that he was able to convince the local farmers to grow his grain for him - not a small undertaking whatsoever. It is noteworthy though that this is an element of scale too - for the volume he is buying, it is certainly worth the farmer's time to do it. But still, impressive. The silvo pasture was extremely interesting from a personal perspective - it gave me some great food for thought. Good job Paul - one might think you had done that before...lol. Good job folks.

Well, compared to working in an office, which l did once for a week, yes. edit: Some people really like being outdoors, using their body to work. If that isn’t true for you, l wouldn’t start a farm. Crazy story! One of our young employees who has been accepted into the Polyface internship this year sent me a text stating "You are featured in this video". It was one of the hardest decisions to sell our farm. I was so connected to that land. Jon, just wait until year 4. That's when the pastures really changed. As the tears of joy roll down my cheeks instead of sweat. I am so proud of this couple for their accomplishment. I may need a hard day of labor soon.

I just wanted to say Thank You! You are doing such a Service. I've so enjoyed your shows as I recently just found you. You are really shining a light on different gardening aspects and techniques. There are so many variables and ways of doing things in the gardening world. I don't understand why your channel doesn't have more viewers, but I'm so hoping your channel gains momentum and gets the recognition it should!❤❤
