One of the worst kept secrets in recent history is finally on my desk, with nVidia launching the RTX 4070 Super this week. At $599, it features 20% More CUDA cores than the RTX 4070, and according to nVidia, is faster than an RTX 3090.
But, boisterous claims aside, I wanted to find out if we finally have the perfect candidate to upgrade your high end GTX 1080 or RTX 2080 GPU. There hasn't been a GPU under $1000 to get excited about since before 2020, and owners of high end 10 and 20 series cards have been searching for an upgrade path. Is the 4070 Super the GPU you've been looking for, or should you just move along?
But first... What am I drinking???

go to gamers nexus.. they compare the 2080ti in almost all of their charts and they have the most solid testing methodology in mine and many opinions.. its what they pride themselves on.. they also even put in 1080ti comparisons on some charts and ARC series gpus just for good measure.. But I think its going to be the 3070 Ti Super that is of real interest.. the 3080 super bassically is just a reaction too terrible sales because why would you pay for the 3080 which is the same size and had a ridiculous price of 1200 dollars, sadly they the 4080 super is hardly an upgrade.. basically running a full 103 dye, with gains around 5 percent.. they don't want to produce a 3080ti like card, which they did last go round, a card that in gaming was within 1-4 percent of the 3090, the only downfall was the lower vram which should have been at least 16 gigs, but i own a 3080ti and it still shreds through everything.. got one of the last EVGA premium cards.. sad to see that company go.. one of the last great customer service companies, unlike amazon Prime which is becoming an absolute joke and actually stealing from people for returning Prime items that are unopened if they deem them to be of high value... which they dont explicitly set a price at.. there are 800 dollar items that aren't considered high value.. and i've heard of people not being able to return HV Items that cost less then 200 dollars.. do yourself a favor and unless its absolutely necessary, buy off of walmart.com they have just as wide of an inventory honestly, or newegg.. or go out and buy your components from a local store some small places have incredible deals because they are struggling because of amazon.. trust me i worked their.. the way they deliver your items is a travesty.. they just smash everything into about 9-18 totes... into vans with no shelves, and then all these heavy ass totes are ment to stack on each other but they are foldable and cpus and gpus are getting crushed at the bottom most likely and not being able to be returned because its up to the driver to decide weather or not the box is damaged.. and if you don't deliver every package on your route you loose money and routes.. hence the fact of all the amazon lawsuits for workers rights violations and why its just easier to go out and buy something in a store like REI;.. you have 1 year to return an item.. doenst even have to be defective.. and then there are the 3rd party sellers on amazon that put the "prime" logo on their store, and in recent months people have been creating stores and selling high value items... that didn't exist, and got away with it because Prime used to be free fast shipping and returns with no questions.. now your at a huge risk of just being robbed if you buy something expensive.. or having it come crushed because they outsource all of their delivery's to DSPs which are 3rd party delivery companies that report too amazon and are under insanely strict and unrealistic guidelines that force their employees to lie about safety protocols to their dsp provider so that they can keep trucks on the road and my poor bosses would have to bassically lie and force us to do this with every truck every morning so they would get paid.. Amazon is quite litterally evil.. buy direct from people.. ive worked for UPS and my god, most people work their untill they retire because the job is so good and they are treated so well.. and in turn they treat your packages well.. and your on the same route ever day which you arnt for "amazon" oh and god forbid if you got hurt.. you have to lie and say in the app that the truck is up to 100 percent safe or they ground it.. even though they dont have basic safety features, which lead me to herniate two discs in my back.... my older brother who deals with large malpractice suites and things of that nature bassically said that amazon is untouchable after looking into a claim for workers comp.. the only way it happens is if you get massive class action suites, and they are brushing those off like its no one buisness. Sorry for the long message.. i just needed to vent and maybe stop one person from buying parts from amazon that you can buy locally or from B&H, best buy.. New egg.. anywhere really. we all need to change the paradigm and our dependence on their platform.

The XFX 6900xt Limited Black XTXH equipped card is the best gpu I have ever owned. Bought it for $900 new two years (ish) ago after selling off my previous 6800xt for $1000 and its replacement the 3080ftw3 for $1200 (wasn't scalping BTW!). I made the mistake of moving up to 4k and bought the M32U the night it released at $800 which is why I bought the 3080ftw3 since it slightly beat out the 6800xt in most games, once I realized I'd have to buy every flagship to keep up with games at that resolution I sold it off for $550 and got a new Dell s2721dgf for$300 and scored a LG 32gp83b(best buys $500 32gp850 clone) for $100...

It is extremely cool, quiet and efficient, even though I have the very cheapest Asus model. I've never had a GPU run at 38°C idle lol, let alone fanless. (and no, the temp doesn't rise). Under load it does get up to max 64°C with the default, inaudible fan speeds.

Knowing where it stands against current gen parts makes me feel a lot better about my used purchase, even if I love the look of the 4070 Super and the much lower power draw. I only recently bought a 3090 for its 24GB and memory performance. The 3090 will always beat the 4070/Super/Ti in anything if more than 12GB is needed. Probably not relevant to gaming tasks specifically now, but it would matter in the future.

reminds me of when the 3070 launched at 175-225w stock and competed with the 2080ti at 1440p...4k is where the extra vram won. Otherwise the thermals and TDP comparison was also a huge QOL upgrade in system thermals. 4070S for a card that competes with 3080ti and 3090 depending on the game or api/engine and res is pretty price competitive on a generational standpoint from pure frame yield to TDP aspect. ESP from an itx/sff standpoint for those users.

I'm planning to sell it to a friend for 350, and I have the disposable income to spend on a 4080 super. Do you feel like that is just overkill for 1440p 180 hz? I plan to upgrade to a 1440p 360hz oled when they become a little more reasonably priced and more developed. I realize that future proofing for an upgrade that could be years off is dumb but I just was curious what you or others think about that. IMO, both the OG 40-series and the 40XX Super cards are/will be good to great products - it's the pricing that's the problem. I'm currently on a Gigabyte 4070 Gaming OC and I'm very happy with the card in most scenarios (I only use a 1440p monitor), but I would like a bit more performance for flight-sims in VR. For that, I was looking at the 4070 Super, but I fear it just won't be worth the trouble of selling the "old" card and getting that new card, seeing its performance uplift over the 4070. I fear that if I do upgrade to another 40xx card it would have to be the 4070 Ti Super (although I still hate that name).
It's not that I truly need more than 12GB of VRAM for what I do on my PC, but having 16 certainly wouldn't hurt. Thing is: Seeing the prices vendors in my country demand for the 4070 Super, I fear that the Ti Super will be in near ludicrous territory WRT price. And it's not like they've slashed prices on the outgoing cards like the 4070 Ti, either. Whose level of performance would be enough for my needs, I think - but with the Ti Super nearly here, I would only buy that one at a healthy discount.

I disagree. In 2010 was the GTX580 for $599, in 2016 we got the GTX1080 (over 4x perf)
Its 2024 and we get a 4070S for $599 (less than 2x perf)
Its terrible value, not bad value would be $999 for a 4090

The whole stack needs a price shuffle, but with the trade restrictions in China and the jump in cost of the 4090, this just feels like throwing a bone to the poor slobs that aren't making Nvidia's bank through AI sales. It seems as if Nvidia is pricing the 40 series on opportunity cost, as though each Geforce GPU's price is based on what Nvidia would prefer to use those dies for--H100s.

I liked the video, but did want to say that the 3090 didn't debut at $1,600, it was $1500, only the 4090 was $1,600 at launch. Just a small correction, albeit a minor one. Enjoyed the video regardless. Cheers

i got my GTX 1080 maybe a year after they were released, and its been a great card since then but its really showing its age in some newer games. Been thinking of going with a used 3080 12gb, as some games i play could use more VRAM and having the overhead would be nice. Was really trying to stay $500 USD or less but the 4070S is really appealing. What cards would anyone recommend for around $500 new or used? Open to AMD as well.

    • @Dexion845

i'd just pony up to the newer card, that's just raster performance, there's better DLSS, RT, and like half the power consumption.

just as i told my best friend, the 4070 S wouldnt be a good upgrade path if you have a 3090. you might as well go 4090, for any real gains. which is why ive stay with mine despite wanting to try the new rt settings.

If you get a new card, it's gotta be one that gives you a substantial leap in performance. "Upgrading" to a card that delivers about the same performance is quite pointless. Unless you're made of money, it's best to skip a generation if you have a flagship GPU. Considering that the 4070 Super is even a thought that crosses your mind, though, I doubt that you are made of money, though. Otherwise you'd already probably have a 4090 already.

Im honeslty happy with my upgrade went from 2x GTX 1080's in SLI to RTX 3070.runing the same games i played with 2x1080's the fps is better and a bit more. (Snow runner just used 1 card and got 70~ while with 3070 got 90+)
My cpu maybe a bottleneck but most of the time my gpu is still at 100% usage and vram also all 8gb used up. I play at 1080p 144hz
My cpu is a overclocked E5-2697v3 runing 12c/24t active at 3.7ghz (with 14c i got max of 3.5ghz)

Jeff, thank you for doing videos / opinion pieces that actuality matter. It gets really frustrating sometimes to sit here and listen to other reviewers complain or be sarcastic throughout the whole video. I really miss this format where the reviewer is speaking directly to the audience, genuinely reviews the card (good or bad), and gives a very honest conclusion. 👍 👍
P.s. Might I also request that you throw a 1080 ti in the mix going forward? You'd be surprised how many people still run them due to them being a steal on the 2nd hand market & people still considering them good value. Thanks

    • @CraftComputing
      @CraftComputing  Před 4 měsíci

Thanks! These are the styles of reviews I always appreciated, and so that's what I sought out to create here.
With the Titan X (Pascal) that I have, performance is virtually identical between it and a 1080 Ti. They have the same CUDA core counts, similar boost clock performance. The Titan has a slightly larger BUS (384-bit vs 352-bit), and an additional 1GB of GDDR5X. The results would be within 1-2% of each other, so not really worth spending the $200 to pick one up today just to have it.

I think you inadvertently had frame gen on in your portal benchmark, it would explain a lot. There's no way those cards can hit those frames with full path tracing on.
Also these benchmarks go to show that 4k is a pretty dumb resolution, absolutely nothing wrong with 1440p or 1800p, and DLSS is really great if you want to upscale to 4k from 1440p
