- This is why enemy combatants fear the A-10 Warthog like nothing else.
The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, nicknamed the Warthog, is one of the scariest planes in the sky. First introduced in the 1970s, the entire plane was made for one thing… blowing stuff up.
That’s because it was designed around one gigantic gun, the 30mm GAU-8 Avenger rotary cannon. This insane gun can fire its 30×173mm rounds at a mindblowing 4,200 rounds per minute. Once you’ve heard the trademark “brrt” noise, it’s already too late.
It also carries up to 16,000 pounds of other mixed ordnance that can include 2,000 pound Mark 84 bombs, incendiary cluster bombs, and even mine dispensing munitions.
It’s powered by two General Electric TF34-GE-100 turbofan engines that give it incredible maneuverability at low speeds, and it has a range of over 2,500 miles. The close air support plane is also equipped with Night Vision Imaging Systems meaning no matter where you are, no matter the time of day, the A-10 Warthog can, and will, find you. - Věda a technologie

The design of the A10 was to give advanced Infantry Support after an Ace convinced the designers that such an aircraft is needed… that man was one of the greatest Aces of all time, Luftwaffe pilot Erich Hartmann, who had been frustrated at his difficulty in helping infantrymen on the ground in the Soviet Union

@@KFLY007 it can't cause a stall but sustained fire does create a deceleration force on the plane. Even with both engines at 100% it still "slows down" but we are splitting hairs here and it certainly isn't enough to stop it. Those engines are FAT

They are massively armored and have three redundant flight systems and they can fly on one engine. They carry countermeasures as well.

But the brrrt doesn't work like that. The gun failed to destroy tanks in multiple trials and the A-10 relies on missiles for most of its kills.
These same missiles can be carried by the F-35 so the A-10 is basically redundant

The A10 can turn inside almost any fighter except those with thrust vectoring, so in close, the A10 doesn't care about your speed. It just means that eventually you will come around in front of the gun.
It also carries AA missiles. So running just means you are sent to adequate distance for those.

Yeah, they're called night vision goggles... FFS this plane is notoriously bad at finding targets, to the point it has the highest friendly fire rate of any other plane. Pilots had to rely on binoculars to identify targets for most of it's life, and the updates haven't changed all that much.
There's only one reason this plane scares people, and that's purely the terrifying sound and spectacle of the brrt cannon, despite the cannon's disappointing effectiveness.
Gotta love it, Warthog is more effective at propoganda than actually doing close air suport.

Its most effective weapon is the rocket/missle munitions it can fire, which almost every other aircraft can fire as well.
Its gun cant bust a modern tank, and it's the least soohisticated aircraft, that regularly targeted friendlies due to the inability to properly ID them.
The A10 truly is a menace to troops, but brrrrt so it gets a pass at being bad.

The A 10 was also called the talibans best propaganda tool because of how many civilians it killed. It has also killed an impresive amount of friendly soldiers.
This is mostly due to A 10 pilot being forced to use his own eyesight to spot enemies.
I love the A-10 warthog it saved my butt in 1980 and my son's in 2010 and I hope it keeps saving families for decades to come.

As a former crew cheif on A10s for 15 years, this comment section makes me smile.
Only issue is that the A10 has to keep a straight path when engaging a ground target, which leaves it s direction predictictable for ground AA and small arms fire when the aircraft starts its run.

Also, like its original namesake, the P-47 Thunderbolt, the Warthog carries a lot of ordnance, can loiter over the battlefield for quite a long time, and can take a huge amount of punishment, all features highly desired in a close air support platform.

As a forward observer in the US Army for 8 years I had the absolute pleasure of calling in Close Air Support many times and the A-10’s on station were always awesome. Although I was once credited with knocking one down in a Reforger exercise in Germany with my tracks M2. I saw it going across the field and opened up and kept firing leading ahead. The umpires came up to me and said that I actually scored a hit and it down! 😆 So I told my driver that we needed to go before his wing man came looking for us. We saw a tunnel under a bridge and hid there for about a half hour until we were cleared to move again. So we drove out and about 100 meters on the road the same umps came up and stopped us and said that we were dead. The enemy had dropped a land mine field on the road and we had rode right into it! 😂😂😂
