- In this video, we took a piece of wood destined for the fire pit and a handful of bottle tops and turned them into this awesome live edge coffee table with recycled plastic bowties. This combination of woodworking and recycled plastic is something we've been wanting to do for a long time now and we're so pleased we finally got round to it.
We chose to use recycled plastic instead of resin, as resin is not a sustainable material and creates so much waste that can't be reused. With all our recycled plastic projects, we collect every scrap of plastic that comes off our tools and machines in order to reuses it in other projects.

I have been binge watching your videos. The table looks great. The bowties are sweet. I made a comment in an old video that I wondered if you could make sticks of plastic that would fit in a hot glue gun. I don't know if that would work but if it did, squeezing plastic into the cracks of that table would be cool.

I think you missed a trick. You could have positioned the leg to span the crack and that way stabilise the underside of the slab. Failing that, an additional bowtie on the underside would also do the job.
One leg actually does span the crack underneath!

Another way to make these would be to use perspex sheet to make a mould for your injection machine keeping the metal top and bottom plate you already have and just change the middle metal sheet and because it's only perspex it's a lot quicker to cut on the CNC machine

Can you create a metal mold that people can buy that would allow them to make interlocking shapes at home that would eventually a (sewing) table top, or workbench
Great work boys as always. I recently did something similar for a cake stand but they both have failed as I don’t think they were dry enough. Now I have to break them apart & try & fix 🤦🏼♂️
Guys, great videos. I was thinking of a small router aka trim router and build a pattern for the router to move about within the pattern to keep the opening to the correct size without any errors. I do like the contrast. However, I think I will continue with another wood for the bow teis such as purple heart or teak. Keep on oushing boundaries.

Could definitely have done that. But we were keen to try cutting them with the router ourselves :)

You guys could just use the CNC to make a mold to press bow ties with if you think they will be commonly used items.
That’s true! But with the shrinkage, they wouldn’t come out identical every time
You can try to make controller skins out of plastic to make you some custom controllers skins
Cool work! I have been watching your videos and I am really inspired to recycle our plastic waste here. I am thinking of working on a recycled birdhouse, however, I don't know if it's safe for the birds to take shelter in. Can you give me some pointers on what to do? Thank you!
Not a critique but a real question: could the plastic have not been smooshed into the cutouts for the bowties in the wood instead of forming them and cutting them to fit?
We did consider this. The issue is shrinkage. HDPE shrinks about 3.3% when cooled so it would not fill the gap perfectly. We’re thinking of ways to combat this though.
Can recycle plastic bond perfectly to wood so as to make it water tight/waterproof?
have you guys heard of PlasTell? they make a small plastic identifier. What are your thoughts on these devices in general?

That looks cool. Now I'm wondering what it would look like if you forced marbled HDPE down into the cracks to highlight them. It wouldn't be a structural repair, I know, but might look nice.
We did think of this as well, but the shrinkage as it cools would be an issue we weren’t sure how to overcome.

We don’t love working with resin. Too wasteful and not recyclable

I have tons of HDPE fine cut in to 2mm squares with the intent on heating to a near resin state, so i can cast it in a silicone mould for cosplay means, anyone ever tried this?

It's a common wood-working technique to prevent large cracks in furniture from getting any larger. This is one of the more fun and interesting ways I've seen it done. (Perhaps "fun"iture... haha)

I don't want to be negative all the time but recycling HDPE is my passion and small things get me bent out of shape. Find it really annoying when you guys call it "your method" when you've never once mentioned that Atomic Shrimp developed this exact panini press method over 9 years ago. I just like to give credit where it's due.
Actually never seen atomic shrimp do it until a few years after we started. We took inspiration from Peter Brown and Art of Weapons channels. Saying that though, we have adapted the method a lot even from all 3 of these sources. I believe Atomic Shrimp used a very different clamping method. We aren’t using the term ‘our method’ to claim that we came up with it. More so that we adapted it and found ways to use it for a variety of uses. Hope that all makes sense!
Only part way through thus far. Why on earth do you use a chainsaw wearing SHORTS?!? You two make great things and generally have decent ppe, but seriously. Short pants + chainsaw = massive fail. You teach people how to do things. Please do not teach them to be foolish when using chainsaws.
Yes, when it goes right, it's all wonderful. But when it goes wrong, you can bleed out in mere minutes. Or literal seconds if you do it wrong in a spectacular fashion.
You have so much money invested in your equipment, but no chaps & I cannot tell if you have ear or eye pro on. Your life is worth more than any video. You said you were using your "questionable chainsaw skills" whilst it may be a joke on your part, aside from the obvious humour of it, sadly it also means you are teaching others how to be ill prepared for the reality of the danger involved with every use of a chainsaw.
While I generally love your videos and how you create/re-create things, this one has me a bit saddened at your lack of forethought. People take working with chainsaws far too lightly right up until the blood starts gushing and the screaming commences. (Not joking here). Am retired fire/ emergency rescue type. Please PLEASE don't help the untrained or just plain foolish people get any more confident about how easy and safe things are, when they aren't. While it looks far less stylish to wear the proper gear, it is much more likely to allow you to continue living to look back and laugh at how stylin you aren't while wearing the proper equipment.
It isn't only smart people watching you here. Make allowances for the young, the ones with absolutely no knowledge of the safe used of any tool and the just plain stupid people out there. Work smarter and safer to help others learn to do the same.

We get lots of comments telling us how much people love our music choice. One person asked for a Spotify playlist so they can listen more. We learnt a long time ago that you can’t please everyone so we use music what we like using and what we think fits the vibe of the video. If you don’t like it then that’s fine!
