Weekly Writing Vlog | Feeling good, but also really insecure?

- I’m still making slow (but GOOD) progress on this round of revisions, and I’m trying to keep the reading flow going too. I feel more creative when I’m reading, though I also feel more insecure? Does anyone know any tips on how to NOT compare yourself to your favorite authors? How do you make yourself feel more confident in your writing?

I am in a weird spot with my writing as well at the moment. I just finished a big novel, and I am very happy with what I did there, I feel I have made a lot of progress as a writer. Now I am working on something new, which is just a background story for one of my main characters. I am writing it just for myself, because I want to get more in touch with her and her voice, and I like the basic idea of this kinda novella, but my writing is. Just. So. Bad, LOL! I tell myself that is because I have only been working on it for a short amount of time, and the story of that finished novel and the characters have been on my mind literally for years, so I cannot compare these two pieces of writing. But still I have this idiotic idea in my head of "I will never again be able to write anything as awesome as ASW!" It's ridiculous, and I know it, but still. I try to ignore it and give myself permission to suck.
I have a collection of quotes that hang on a binder clip over my desk, and I always pick the one that best fits the current state I am in. That can be "Done is better than perfect" or "No excuses!", depending on the day. ;-) At the moment, it reads "Do it imperfectly. Give yourself grace. Trust the process." I try my very best to follow these wise words, and seeing them every time I look up, really helps me.

Ugh thank you so much! 💖 I really appreciate that and it’s so reassuring. I would love to be one of those vloggers who travels and has fun B-roll footage and cool writing spaces, but the most traveling I do is to my office lol.
Firstly, congrats on finishing a big project!! I know what you mean about comparing new work to older work omg. You feel like you lost the spark or something, it’s the worst, so I’m so sorry you’re dealing with that! Allowing yourself permission to suck is honestly the only way to do it, because even when you end up with something you think is crappy, at least you have something to edit and fix. I used to never finish anything because I was so obsessed with perfection. 😅
Putting up quotes around your workspace is SUCH a good idea!! I’ll definitely have to do that, those little reminders are so simple but so good to have.

Your vlogs are not boring they show the reality of writing. Also you 100% write more then me so I'm always proud and excited for you. I have tried to stream fallen order but youtube doesn't like when I do it so thouse streams are kinds scuffed but I have watched others play it and I like the story. Have not seen the new one yet. I think it's call Chapter three podcast they are doing a read a long and talking about each Dark Olympus book. I'll send you the link to the channel.

I'm sure you've probably already stated, but what are check boxes for in your chapter editing? I'm curious about other people's processes as I'm going to soon be starting edits on my first proper novel!
Each block is a page! So I’m going through page-by-page with a fine-toothed comb, and I just cross ‘em off as I go. It’s just an excuse to have a tracker, because I’m a really visual person and it makes me feel like I’m accomplishing something haha! That’s exciting though!! Good luck! 💖
@@aprilkayauthor I thought it might be! That's a great way to do it. I'm very visual as well and I plot / outline on paper because of that. Can't have too many notebooks am I right? I can't wait to see/hear more about your books. I'm very much interested in reading them!
