Men's and women's snowboarding made their Olympic debuts at the Nagano Games in 1998 with giant slalom and halfpipe competitions. The discipline proved an instant success and returned to Salt Lake City four years later.
Gian Simmen from Switzerland won the first Olympic snowboarding Gold medal in the Men's Halfpipe event, with Daniel Franck from Norway and Ross Powers from the USA taking Silver and Bronze, respectively.

Respect to these pioneers.
They paved the way for others to follow.
Amazing to see how much the sport has progressed...go back and look at 2002, 2006...the tricks and pipes got bigger and bigger. Don't laugh at these early pioneers, that's like laughing at Arnold Palmer bc he used golf clubs with persimmon heads
The event can basically be split into "before Shaun White" and "after Shaun White". White elevated the sport to a new level. Chloe Kim is doing that on the ladies side.
This is amazing to me the stoke level is so high and they tried their best with the pipe and the athletes were sending it
11 ft or 22 ft I still can’t do what these guys do. Love watching them in the pipe no matter what year it is
I had started working at Santa Cruz Snowboards a little less than a year before this, and was obviously hyped to see Simmen win since he rode for them. It was a big boost for publicity, and on a personal level I had just started snowboarding and even got an autographed picture of Simmen when my mom met him at a trade show, so I was pretty hyped. It's a trip to see how far the sport has come since then.
look at how derpy that pipe looks to the modern ones. and how close they stay to the pipe compared to how high above shaun white gets. amazing to see how the sport has progressed.
I'd like to see the riders today compete on this pipe.
awesome!
amazing crowd
Ron Chiodi was a hero in my home town
we have come a long way
belle époque
It was a progression made by the Winter X-games. There is a video somewhere showing the progression in height during the Winter X-games since the start till the year the video was done. An early professional snow halfpipe is pretty amateur-ish nowadays
this is snowboarding...
Look how low the half pipes were back then at 14-16 feet, now they are 22
Snowboarding was introduced in 1998. It requires physical technique of gymnastics, springboard and tower diving. You just need to have a lot of snow though.
I don't know how about you, but I will watch it on ScreenVariety.
COLOR GLASS TELEVISION 5 AND RABBIT ANTENNA MONITOR 2048 X 1080 MICROSOFT 1998
I remember watching it in 98 live and being super disappointed with the judging.
How would you place them?
Daniel frank should winn this, "He doing much harder tricks anyone!!! "Haakon flip was very hard back days, but this "Jury was a joke!!!
DANIEL CANICA DE METEPEC ES CANADIENSE SE CASO CON 32 CHICAS EN CANADA BELLISIMAS EL OSTENTA EL RECORD MUNDIAL DE VIRGINIDAD 32 CICLOS LO LOGRO

you are not allowed to have an opinion on what is good or not because your avatar is lil' wayne
1998 hahahaha the pipe looks so small
They didn't wear helmets!?!
When did the half pipe get so much larger?
cj222100 it rose to 22 ft walls in 2010. Even now though some people don’t wear helmets
How did Daniel not win gold?
I´m still asking the same question. For me the best style of all time. It´s a pity he left snowboarding competitions
I remember being up at 2 am to watch the pipe finals. Daniel was killing it, but the judges proved a bunch of idiots. He did way more technical tricks than Gian Simmon, with way more style. Also, I remember he had an injured left shoulder, so he grabbed only with his right hand. And yet he pulled it off.
that was tricky! daniel should win!! siemmens was bad!
Sadly they used the FIS-scoring system where total score in both run counted. Daniel had a bad first run.
If best run counted Daniel had won easily with Ross Powers in second place.
Simmens runs was jittery and with no style.
Even with both runs scored, Ross Powers should have won.
To be fair though, the rest of the starting field dit pretty poorly outside these 3 riders.
They look so unstable...
Yeah. I guess it's because the pipe is very uneven. Looks like it's handmade.
@@snegelstenen He meant they look mentally unstable
forget this I can snowboard doing gangnam style
Wow no helmets!
i'm a good skier !!!
No helmets, awesome!
Lol is that sarcasm
No you are not
those are not cool moves
you understand that a sport progresses, right?
Not compared to riding today. But I hope you realize this was 1998 when snowboarding kind of was still in its cradle.
