EDF Iron Rain | a Good Sequel to the Best/Worst Game [SSFF]

- Earth Defense Force is one of the best worst video game series of all time. While EDF’s managed to get a sizable cult following, this bug shooter is ready to show that it’s more than just dumb cheesy fun with its newest entry: EDF Iron Rain.

Everyone who said "I'll wait until it's on Steam" well both Earth Defense Force 5 AND Iron Rain are now BOTH available on Steam! Were yall all talk?? Or are you actually going to help save humanity from the evil insect invaders??
From vicious giant insects who have once again come back
We'll unleash all our forces
We won't cut them any slack
The E.D.F deploys!
EDF! EDF! EDF!
For anyone interested, they are both 50% off right now on Steam for the holidays, just bought EDF 5 and can't wait to finally play it!
This is why the ravagers won…
Just got EDF5 on Steam I'm waiting to get a Xbox controller before installing it. Mostly because I'm better with a controller then mouse and keyboard.

EDF is Anthem done right lol
Yeah... what could have been. I really hope EDF never goes down the fee-to-pay route, though. It's too pure.
@@greenhowie What does free to play have to do with this?
@@tigerfestivals5137 Ah, my bad. Memes. Fee-to-pay means you pay full price for a live service that still charges you for cosmetic items and lootboxes etc.
Warframe is Anthem done right. Warframe has NINJAS.
Derek is your Aladdin deck enhancer okay???
@singular on1 Considering Derek's inspiration from the AVGN in starting out, it was probably a big thing for him to get an official cameo in an AVGN video after so many years and making his own path.
We wil mourn the deck enhancers for years to come.
Does this game work on the Aladdin Deck Enhancer?
Since all copies of the Aladdin Decker have been destroyed... no. 😋
Did youtube reccomend you AVGN's Aladdin's deck enhancer video?
@@sagishi1245 No I've been watching AVGN and HVGN for over 10 years.
@@Spanishdog17 me too, he's on another level. What I meant is that I got avgn's video about Aladdin DE recommended while watching this and I thought the same happened to you, thus you mentioned it.

Proceed to not make physical copies of EDF 5 nor this
Yeah, that was really disappointing. But seems like there is suddenly a physical copy of EDF 5 coming out in Europe on April 30th. Some stores have it listed at least.
Edit: Damn, just went checking out the shops again to be sure, and one of them removed the date, and the other removed the product completely. It was all still there a few days ago. Seems like I prepare for getting disappointed again.
I can kind of see why tbh, they might see it as too much of a risk
EDF5 did shockingly well but its still arguably pretty niche. I wish they still had a limited edition made to preorder numbers to at least test the waters...???
Who cares? You can live without a plastic box that is essentially useless.
@@hollywood21639 Many people care, for various reasons.
@@OneStepToDeath420 I don't understand why anymore. You have to install them on the HD anyway and a lot of them now need a download to even make the disc content playable. I don't need the box on my shelf to make me feel better about myself.
It's the Starship Troopers of the gaming culture.
I love EDF 4.1 on Steam. Still hoping we'll get both EDF 5 and Iron Rain on Steam as well.
Hopefully we get a patched and revamped 5.1 for our troubles.
This, sooo much.@@greenhowie
Yes, let hope so and better hope it is not on the EGS. All my friend are in Steam
I doubt Iron Rain will come to PC.
ARE YOU FUCKING READY
The one thing I want from EDF is drop-in/drop out online coop. Waiting for someone to finish the level isn’t very fun at all.
That's very true, although there is a reason behind it. The strength of enemies in 4.1 changes depending on how many players are present when the mission loads. Of course, games have been allowing for dynamic difficulty tweaks on the fly with drop-in gameplay for years, so it isn't like it would be impossible to design and balance such a system. Sandlot isn't a very big developer, however, so I wouldn't get my hopes up.
@@Sir_Duckyweather It would be nice if the new player could at least watch the game being played currently. Sure, they can't jump in, but it beats just staring at the lobby screen until the host is done with the current level.
"Heavy regulation from the hardware maker" is totally a thing. Sony frequently nixed PlayStation games for the NA market if they don't fit the console's marketing image. In the PS1 era this meant losing out on great games such as Vib-Ribbon, simply because they didn't show off the console's polygon-pushing capabilities. Doubtless, EDF didn't fit SCEA's stringent requirements by being too cheesy for Sony's brand image.
EDF is slowly creeping into the mainstream. Damn I can only hit the thumbs up button once !!!
I love the splitscreen multiplayer on EDF 4.1, the EDF5 or Iron Rain still have splitscreen? :(
Yea Iron Rain has it!!!
Yeah, the games have split screen.
Just got EDF 5 a few hours ago, it's my 1st EDF game and I'm loving it. For about a year or so I've been contemplating on whether to get EDF 4.1 or 5 but never ended up choosing to get it until a few hours ago. I should've gotten the game sooner 'cuz I'm enjoying the game so much. The Air Raider is the one I decided as my 1st class to play and I'm totally enjoying it. I've only gotten to mission 22 so far as of right now.
Insect Armageddon was my first EDF game
Same here
Great video. Lots of passion and very well edited. I’ll have to check out this series for sure now.
Great video. Love all of the content you create. Keep up the good work.
Great summary of the EDF series and where Iron Rain fits in. I love it for the same reasons you do, So I'm pumped to play this new take on it!
Been on a heck of an EDF kick lately, working on getting the platinum trophy on EDF 5 and also working through Iron Rain with some friends in co-op.
I've been enjoying Iron Rain, as it's different enough to keep it's identity but it still feels enough like EDF to me. Heck, I'd say Iron Rain does some things better than 5. I fell in love with EDF 2017 partly because the game was so straightforward, you load in a level, it starts, you shoot the baddies, boom, you're done. 5 has several levels where characters chat back and forth for what seems like forever (looking at you Turning Point) before the level proper actually starts, and don't get me started about the tutorial mission I've had to play over and over again in pursuit of the platinum trophy. Iron Rain on the other hand? Yeah, it's got storyline cutscenes, which you'd think I'd be all up in arms about, but the important thing is they are SKIPPABLE. Oh how I wish I could skip the opening chatter on Encounters on Return...
To save our mother earth from any alien attack!

"Oh my God it's raining men!"
That part made me laugh pretty hard.
I usually have lazypurple flashbacks when I hear that line. ;P
I got in to this game when I got into what I like to call "B-games", like B-movies, or movies that are so bad that is sooo good.
For a while, I was only playing wither triple A or indie games with an 80 average score or above. As strange as it sounds, playing top scoring games all the time can actually get boring or repetitive.
I think it was Deadly Premonition that really got me into b-games, and that made me seek out this series, along with Disaster-Day of Crisis. I never looked back since, and I've been giving games a chance based on if I think I'll enjoy it personally, just like how you used to buy games in the 90s.
Dude! I saw you in AVGN, what a neat surprise!
Link plz
It is too bad EDF 5 doesn't have Dr. O'Hara.
Your facial expression in the AVGN alone killed me 😂. Oh and your channel is awesome
4:20 "its worth skipping this one for the HD remaster"
*cries in xbox*
Edf 4.1, 5, iron rain and 6 should return to xbox
So going all Attack on Titan on space aliens and giant ants, a streamlined system, and design that works as a sister game to the main EDF titles. Interesting stuff, i've been considering getting into the series but never really knew where to begin before this video. Just gotta hope for Steam releases for 5 and Iron Rain in the future.
I love how you casually mention *AUTO SAVING* as a new great new feature! 😂 😂
Want to give a PSA to all EDF fans and SSFF. There is a physical PS4 version of EDF5 in ENGLISH released in Asia. Hope that helps some fellow collectors and great video as always keep up the awesome work!
Yes! Got the Asian version last month, it even has a reversible cover with the english title and english text.
Cool, but for dlc, you likely need a SEN PSN account. No thanks, just release a physical PS4 copy in stores and I'll buy it.
I love when edf sprinkles in a spinoff its such a nice breath of fresh air and there really good
"Heavy regulation from the hardware maker" likely refers to SCEA in specific who typically had much more stringent ideas about what games were allowed on the platform than their Japanese and European counterparts, issues with SCEA is why Yakuza 2 took years to reach America, Sega didn't want to pay to dub it but at that point in the PS2's lifespan you couldn't release a game with only a Japanese voice track. This attitude would continue on PSP where SCEA kept things like Suikoden 1 + 2 collection out of America because of a requirement of "at least 20% new content" whatever that means in such a context. In EDF's case SCEA likely had a vague guideline about games not reflecting badly on the platform in a technical sense. These kinds of guidelines are why European PS2 owners got a lot of simple 2000 games, but also why they got bottom of the barrel barely functional licensed trainwrecks like PS2 Garfield and Home Alone
When the producer made this comment, I asked him about Katamari Damashii. When Katamari was first in released '04 it was a $20 budget title and had almost no promotion, probably because Sony and Namco thought Americans wouldn't like it. But it became a hit. He didn't attribute it directly to Katamari but he did say that somewhere between Earth Defense Force releases, Sony got more lax with their restrictions.
@@StopSkeletonsFromFighting That's a very interesting angle I hadn't considered, I appreciate the additional context.
OMG, is this also why we didnt get EDF2p, the PSP port of EDF2, but eventually got it when it was remastered on the vita?
I remember my friend showed me EDF 2017 he is like "dude check out this goofy stupid fun game" and the rest is history.
Been playing since the 360. Absolutely love this series and pleasantly surprised to keep seeing new entries!
Your wish for EDF 5 has happened; it's on Steam! Currently a *global top seller.*
Amazing vid dude 👍
Always have to thank you for getting me into this series! It is my favorite dumb fun game.
vicious cycle also made robotech battlecry and im pretty shure they retextured a battle pod "foot" for the intro at 8:08...
Unrelated, but I popped big time when I saw you in the AVGN video!
NICE! A new show. I’ve been re-watching a bunch of the old shows for the past week. I’m so pumped for something on the newer side! ;)
You know, you should do a special one-off Happy Video Game Nerd episode one of these days as a nostalgic throwback for your long time fans. You could do the video as if you were continuing from where you left off, and you could use your original theme song from the first few episodes for added nostalgic effect. People would go nuts!
He did one a year ago, kinda: czcams.com/video/ZvDizvt95Yo/video.html
Im getting a PS4 next month and I was lookin for a video with a recommendation, for which game to start with. Thanks bro^^
Also,I liked your Castlevania and Parasite Eve videos from years back! Greetings from Germany #GetTheVibez
Great video, you nailed it. EDF!
I'm hoping EDF5 and/or Iron Rain come to Steam sometime soon
Yeah, also hope for a PC release or at least an Xbox release, since the last gen xbox got all games and those are even upwards compatible. Also maybe a switch edf classics edition?
Wish granted efd 5 is on steam. Iron rain will release tomorrow on steam.
haha mark from cgr! "EDF EDF"
thats how i know of it also
Congrats on getting your face in the new AVGN video. Glad you survived the explosion.
They finally added a Godzilla
@SSFF - There *is* a physical copy for EDF 5 that you can order from Play-Asia. The Multi-language release comes with English and Korean language options!
Ugh, you've convinced me, I'm gonna put my Mega Sg aside for a while and play some EDF 2017 tonight. One of these days I'm gonna get those last two achievements. (Probably not.)
Also, you've just reminded me I've got a copy of 4.1 still in the shrink wrap. I should crack into that at some stage, too, I guess. :D
I need to actually play Earth Defense Force. It seems right up my alley.
so in the end Iron Rain is another Insect Armageddon only in the areas of scale of level and amount of enemies. cuz IA had small friggin levels and not many baddies, but they had too much health.
Hell yeahh!! I knew this video was in the making.
Why didn't they release either of these EDF games physically for PS4? I'll wait for deep sale.
I'm not a big multiplayer-guy, but I've spent 300hours with EDF5's Co-op so far. The EDF community is the nicest online bunch I've ever met. Some dude really helped me get to the cruicial 70% mark, asking which missions I need, another guy showed me how to farm high level weapons. And just when you think triggering that "EDF"-shoutout or the singing via the com-system gets boring, someone else does it and you can't help but join the yelling and shouting. This series deserves a 100m$ budget and a 5 million player-base, because it's positive, innocent fun.
Hello, SSFF! This is Annedak the Dragon from northern Wyoming. Being an "Earth Defense Force" fan myself, I would like to give this video the biggest Thumbs Up there is, especially considering this video has begun with looking at the now cult-classic "EDF 2017" for the Xbox 360. The EDF Deploys, brother!
Man this just makes me want to boot up 4.1 again on Steam lol by the way nice cameo in AVGNs latest video!
I really hope more EDF games come to PC... Love the series!
Man I played like 150 hours of 2017. I miss these games. Gotta play these new ones.
I think I am finally going to check one of these out!
I’ve played them all except the very first two that you can’t get in Canada. Love it!
@ 2:00 The music is godlike!!!
I'd buy EDF 5 on steam.
Noah Tekulve did u buy it
8:07 i still have that game till this day and i love it
People: why did you buy iron rain
Me: *prowler grapple intensifies*
"Oh my god! It's raining men!"
not to argue, but how in the hell does EDF2017 not have a hero or a villain? Storm1 is the hero this space war needed, which is who you are. the most important evidence to this is the final level, the hardest of the fights. if it drags out long enough the commanding officer on the radio and his assistant make mention of how everybody fight there is basically dead, then they realize that Storm1 is still out there fighting *ALONE* and kicking as much ass as he can.
and the villain is the big death star Mothership, it even does the main villain thing of showing up throughout the game to taunt you after having just dropped off more stuff to keep you at bay until you make it stay in one place and fight you with everything it has.
and in EDF4 (2025) the story makes mention of Storm1 actually being among your ranks in the last mission, fighting another threat you dont have time to deal with during that mission. if i am remembering correctly.
Been playing Iron Rain on the PS catalog lately and lovin it ❤ haven’t played an edf in years and it brought me right back. Awesome series
I just loved edf 5s ending where you have to kill a god
Picked up EDF 5 when It was on sale and did not regret it!
EDF! EDF!! EDF!!!
I wonder if the classic game room videos has something to do with this
I think that's how I first found out about the series. Thanks CGR!
The 5th one is awesome please make more. This game is way too much fun to play!
One of my favourite youtubers that i have a bad habit of forgetting about...
Earth Deck-Enhancer Force
Both are on sale on psn right now. Debating on if I should get EDF 5 or Iron Rain. Leaning towards iron rain as my first EDF game
This is pretty much a game I know I would enjoy playing, then I look at one picture of a swarm of giant spiders jumping and I remember why it's a hands off affair and my admiration can and should be a distant one sided affair.
Don't know if you can answer this. I played EDF 4.1 and loved it, I want to buy a new edf game but don't which one. Between EDF 5 and Iron Rain, which is the one you recommend the most? I'll buy world brothers for sure but not yet.
EDF 5 is more of the same kinda experience EDF 4.1 offers, but on a bigger scale with nice quality of life changes. I think between the 2 that's the one to go for.
There is a physical copy of English version EDF 5 for the PS4 but it is rare and I only saw it once only
so guys drop your choice which one is the best? EDF5 or Iron Rain?
I'll wait for the Aladdin Deck Enchancer port
They no longer uploading streams on the streaming chanel?
I still need to play one of these games. Probably gonna be 4.1.
I usually finish these games in like a day or 2 they were just addicting
Honestly, this series sounds like the dumb fun that i would just love!
it seems that either 4.1 or 5 are the ones to start with, but which one would people advise for a newcomer to the series like me?
The crazier/sillier and most over the top the better for me. Does any of them have splitscreen support?
Thanks in advance!
4.1 all the way. 5 if you have a console. They're kind of like Dynasty Warriors games (er, apart from 9) - the first one is a basic concept, then they just added stuff with each new game. The voice overs in the main games are worth it all on their own, though - avoid Insect Armageddon and Iron Rain until you know you're a fan, they have a more serious tone.
If you have a PS4, go with 5. It's the best third person arcade shooter out there and you will start to hate slow cover shooters like Gears or Uncharted when playing this. Nothing beats dual-wielding gattling guns while doing bunny hops or dashing into a crowd of insects with two hammers.
@@mark-o-man6603 , @greenhowie thank you for the replies, ended up going with 5 although i have yet to find the time to play it, looking foward to trying this bad boy!
This kinda reminds me of guilty pleasure games like, "musou", like Dynasty warriors, Senran Kagura, Onechanbara. Maybe do a little series on them? Stupid fun games? Hehe
The Super Best Friends got me into this series. If you like (or in the mood for) dumb, sort of repetitive fun along the lines of an Omega-Force Warriors game, definitely check this series out.
That Tee, yo!
Yeah I think consoles are not ready to really support a narrative version of EDF that will appeal to the casual crowd.
Might have been better if Iron Rain was a next gen launch.
Now I have to play EDF4.1! Is the PC version any good?
yes
The Happy Video Game Nerd
2:14 I think he's referring to Sony's old policy that if a game comes out in the West it MUST have an English dub, but at the time Sandlot didn't really have the funds for it, and why the eventual localizations removed all troop chatter and rebranded to kind of circumvent that. (Plus Sony laxxed on that in later years, but it's also why we ended up getting the goofy English Yakuza dub).
1:08 - you got to check out the new earth defense force AND get laid? damn son
If I want to get a start in this series should I do 4, 5 or iron rain?
the fourth one , then the fifth one
Wilshine McShadow Thank you!! I got the 4th one for about 12 bucks! Thanks for the recommendation
I know this comment is old, and most people will always say EDF 4 and 5 but to me. I'd say Iron Rain. Because it's meant for both new comers and veterans of the series. You can play that game easier, while EDF 4 and 5, you gotta take you time to really understand everything. If you play Iron Rain, and if you like it enough, then move on to 4 and 5. :)
Assassin199410 thanks for the info! I grabbed 4 cuz I found it cheep. I’ll grab iron rain when I can
I got through EDF 4.1 and 5 last year and last month with my roommate, respectively. They're the best and worst experience you can have in gaming, simultaneously, and I wouldn't trade my time with them for the world.
I thought that picking up same weapon in 4.1 upgrade it too
The return of storm team
EDF 5 has way more world building than you give credit. Especially when it comes to certain characters and military units, and then the progression of things getting worse and worse. The Grim Reapers, the Blue Jackets, the Exterminators and then there's Sarge and his squad. They're all recognizable. Also the massive set pieces in EDF 5s missions more than make up for the lack of map variety, and the options you have in how you approach some of the missions makes up for it as well. And the AI can be extremely helpful and in some missions are almost a necessity, and can be a major bonus in later waves if you keep them alive. Both mechanized and ones on foot. And the fact that you can amass yourself a small army and go crazy really makes you feel like you are fighting alongside the EDF and only where it is appropriate does it make you feel like it's you against the entire alien army. There is a distinctive, "without your help, they die and without their help, you die" dynamic in a good number of the missions. It makes it feel like a more complete EDF experience than Iron Rain by quite a margin. Plus... I mean... You can sing along with your entire squad. That right there is a big thing in itself. Can't do that in Iron Rain. I guess what I am getting at is that Iron Rain lacks that feeling of being part of an entire army. It feels pretty lonely. Even though it comes down to you towards the end, it doesn't feel that way up until that point where it's supposed to.
For those who are put off due to there being no physical release for this or EDF 5 you can always get the Asia release for both games that include English on disc!
The Closer is called that cause he always be closing.
I could never play these games. I felt things crawling all over me just watching this video
I recently played through this entire campaign on a ps5 and.. I'd say of the games in the series I have played it was the least "fun". it was shorter than most campaigns, had the smaller maps you mentioned, had a lot of "night" missions that were aweful to do, the weapns lacked FUN in variety, some of the objective big baddies took a ton of damage to kill with little feedback if what you did was at all effective, and they heavily put emphasis on "high damage = ridiculous reload/recharge times" so it went from run and gun goodness to gun and run like hell badness(reminds me of adding gun overheat meters to contra lol). Plus the story lacked any kind of "epic" over-the-top feel like prior ones had. I'd say I actually enjoyed the old insect armageddon more overall, which... is saying something. I hope Iron Rain isn't most folk's first foray. 4.1 or 5 are far more "dumb fun".
Guess they could later add a ping system for teamwork.
