    Greetings from Thornton Colorado! Just subbed. Euro nymphing is the way to go many times. Those copper John’s and bead head pheasant tails can be deadly. If you take a moment to think, even when you spin fish jigs in a river you’re effectively doing euro nymphing. I use an indicator ( thinga ma bobber) on deep lakes with plain ole 4-6# PLine tippet nothing fancy and effective. I don’t carry a lot of gear, I wear a necklace with fingernail clippers, hemostat, fly patch and fly dry desiccant. In a hip pack lunch, water,sunscreen. I have collected a ton of gear over my 64 years to which most get dusty. When you go minimal you adapt and figure things out. The more you know the less you carry. Nice job Amani keeping it simple.

      If you watch my clips on my 'backcountry lakes and creeks' playlist where I am fishing alpine lakes, I fish fairly simply. 4lb Berkley vanish and a nymph. 2 knots, one on the fly and the other on the end of the fly line, no strike indicator. I sometimes fish the nymphs halfway like a streamer with the occasional short tug. In rivers with jigs, all of the clips on my 2 rivers playlist I simply tie the jig onto 6lb mono and I control the fast action. Glad to have you aboard. All of my content is organized on playlists to make navigating your way through it easier. I'm getting ready to head out and create more content as I type this! Good luck next time you hit the water.

    You must be maintaining both Cali and Nevada residences, Non- resident fees are horrendous. I don't know how I could do it and I'm retired 70+ who does not rock hop very efficiently anymore. There is plenty of Nevada water to explore as you have shown. Just above Verdi there is a nice stretch. Have you fished it? Thanks for the entertainment!

      I have a 21 clip Truckee River playlist where I fish the river up and down in both States and then I have a few others on my River playlist. The California nonresident license was rough. I function on a tight budget. With the second rod stamp it was almost $160. I am not a man of means by any stretch of the imagination but I get my money's worth with action and good fish to eat!

    I love this...don't get to see you fly fish with weightless flies often. When I was young, 60 years ago, this is how my dad started me. A fly rod from the bargain barrel, 1 or 2 bucks maybe, just one weight leader/tippet and of course back then no indicator. Good job, another great video!

    • @wildernesswithamani1027
      @wildernesswithamani1027  Před 3 lety

      Cool. I get the bargain barrel. My fly rod consists of a combination of components from two different inexpensive backpacking fly rods. The bottom of one and the top of another. That would explain why it's two different colors! Yeah, I've never used a strike indicator. A lot of what I do in fishing in general is self taught or simply just figuring it out. Thanks for sharing your story.

      Stay in shape and you can do it! There's a lot to explore out there in the wild. It's all waiting for you and it will take a lifetime to experience it! I started hitting the fishing hard as a kid growing up in NoCal but as soon as me and my friends could drive it was full Sierra Assault! Backpacking, hiking, or car camping it didn't matter. It all revolved around fishing. We'd drive hours from SoCal at least a couple times a month. One by one my hardcore fishing and camping friends got married and had kids which took them out of the regular trip game. I started going by myself coming from SoCal. I lived at the beach in Sand Diego for decades and never grew up! I'm not suggesting you never grow up. I'm just saying into the outdoors as often as possible. It nourishes the soul!

    • @wildernesswithamani1027
      @wildernesswithamani1027  Před 2 lety

      It's fine for me. The one in this clip was actually the components from two different backpacking rods combined, half black and half green, but the bottom was Maximumcatch! I have a bunch of clips on my 'backcountry lakes and creeks' playlist where I use this rod with good success and it was just as great as it was when it was 100% maximumcatch. I broke the rod in this clip and a viewer got me another maximumcatch rod to replace it and it is just fine. I never could afford expensive gear on top of taking frequent trips to the mountains to fish so I have always used rods in this lower price range. I figure, just get me to the water with something to fish with and I'll figure the rest out!

    Ok, let’s just say that you’re a good fisherman. I’ve watched so many of your vids, and wondered if you could do well with fly gear. You’re obviously very successful with your spinning rods! Here you are flyfishing, & hooking up while nymphing with NO INDICATOR! Hats off to you.
    FYI, They make indicator tippet. It is multi-colored, and you can put about a 2 foot section right about where the line breaks the surface. It helps to detect strikes while fishing without indicators.

    • @perfectmoment
      @perfectmoment Před 3 lety

      This is my favorite of all your videos. I’ve been flyfishing for over 25 years. Typically, nymphing for most of us involves 2 flies, an indicator, split shot, and who knows how many knots!!
      You have simplified it immensely. You just tied a nymph on. Period!!
      The rest was all skill.
      I’m not kidding, Dude. You rock.

      Most of what I do comes from years of just trying stuff. I first fished those 1/8Oz jigs in a river in my first Truckee River clip from last June. I saw them on the rack at Walmart and they looked interesting. I tried them in my Eagle Lake clip from desolation Wilderness and hit a few Browns. I then figured, I'll try them in a river. That first Truckee River clip started a streak where I caught fish on jigs for 19 day straight days of fishing on the river (Playlist for that). I never looked back! When the fishing gets tough, think outside of the box and figure out a way to make it happen! Thanks for tuning in. I have a lot more to come.

    • @flyguy2021
      @flyguy2021 Před 3 lety

      Most of the people I know do that. If you’re right handed it makes sense to cast right and also reel with your dominant hand. If you fish saltwater or else where where you need to reel in line fast, it’s the best way to go.

    • @randy71646
      @randy71646 Před rokem

      @@flyguy2021 I must be an oddball, I cast right handed and reel left handed. Why do I want to waist time switching rod hands (fumbling) around to play my fish off the reel by switching hands to reel in left handed? I got used to fishing that way after losing very large fish during the rod hand switch. I have to admire and praise Amani for not using a strike indicator. My fly line tip is a great indicator for me as well. Oh, he's fishing in my backyard in this video...I live in the area. Bigger fish are not that far away.

    • @flyguy2021
      @flyguy2021 Před rokem

      I’m not coordinated enough with my left hand to reel as fast as I need to when a bonefish takes out 100 yards of backing and then turns around and comes back at me. Also would rather palm the reel with my more sensitive right hand . Never really lost a fish changing hands, but I’m sure I would have lost some by reeling with my left. There’s no right way, but test yourself sometime and see which hand you can reel in 100 yards of backing quicker. I can make either way work and often fish with guides who have boat rods set up the “wrong” way.

    • @randy71646
      @randy71646 Před rokem

      @@flyguy2021 Amani, you said this "guides who have boat rods set up the “wrong” way. and then I also read "There’s no right way". If you tell me the wrong way, will I know the right way?
      If you have a bone fish with a 100 yards of backing out + the length of your line and leader, and that fish makes a run towards you, you be in a heap of trouble. Doubt that you could gain much control of your fish by stripping your slack line back in order to continue that battle let alone reel it in. I have a dominate eye for shooting, but not so much a numb palm. Sorry about that Amani. You remind me very much of my late father-in-law, he never went anywhere without his rods and gear. He was always checking any water any where for fish. He got excited over every fish he caught. Fish on Amani fish on.

      I let it get down there and then I give it short strips so it pops up and then sinks right back down. I mix in some longer stripping too at times. Other times I just let it drift as usual. It all depends on the specific situation. If you have watched some of my alpine lake content, you have seen that I fish nymphs very much like streamers at times with effectiveness. In my dick's lake clip, I think I was letting the nymph sink so much before stripping it in the floating line was sinking with it! If you haven't watched any of it and are interested. It's all on a playlist. Some alpine lake clips are just fly fishing while others are a mixture. What ever works right! Thanks for watching.
