Please guys. JJ Lin is Singaporean of Chinese ethnicity. Born, raised and grew up in Singapore and still is Singaporean. It exasperates me that many Americans still mistake Singapore as being part of China. It is not. Singapore is an independent multicultural city in SEA.

JJ is Singaporean but debuted in Taiwan. As a Singaporean who took Mandarin Chinese as a second language, English was actually his stronger first language. The Chinese taught in SG is Simplified Chinese, but when he started in Taiwan, everything was in Traditional Chinese. To improve his Traditional Chinese, he wrote daily journal entries in Traditional Chinese, wrote song lyrics and basically forced himself to immerse in the language and use it so that he was good enough to debut in Taiwan. Many people had caustic comments that disparaged him when he was younger. Not understanding some Taiwanese slang and the nuances of the local language there also made him get laughed at by some variety show hosts or people who called the shots in the local music scene. He kept working hard and used every setback as a setup to do better. People said he’s not handsome, so he groomed himself. Said he could not dance, he went to South Korea to learn how to dance and even hired SK dancers for his concert. Said he could not rap, he wrote and performed rap songs to diss those haters. Said he could not sing, he went to the US to learn from one of the best vocal coaches there. He really beat all the odds because being a singer and pursuing his dream was unheard of and no one ever thought he could succeed. It was sheer hard work, his genuine sincerity and grit that gave him his success today.

This show is called "Sound of My Dream". Amateur singers are given the chance to "challenge" a celebrity tutor (JJ is one of them) by singing one of the celebrity's songs. In exchange, the celebrity is assigned one of four randomly selected songs (not allowed to sing own songs and has three hours to come up with a cover performance of the song.

JJ Lin is a Singaporean singer, composer, songwriter, producer, and he's got many Mandarin songs, but can also sing in English, as many Singaporeans are at least bilingual in English and their mother tongue. In this case, since JJ Lin is ethnically Chinese, his mother tongue would be Mandarin. In the Mandopop world, he's one of the legends now. When Ed Sheeran had a concert in Singapore, he sang with JJ Lin, and the song was in Mandarin. There is a live video of that performance floating about somewhere in CZcams. Amazing how Ed picks up the Mandarin lyrics from JJ backstage so quickly, then performs the song with him onstage not long afterwards.

JJ Lin is an amazingly versatile singer. This song was from a competition program ‘Sound of my Dream’ which had 3 seasons and he was in all of them. He has collaborated with Anne-Marie, Steve Aoki, Luis Fonsi, and also did a Filipino song called ‘Hanggang’.
Great reaction LOVED it. I would also LOVE it if you could do more JJ Lin. He is one of, if not the top Singer-songwriters in the C-pop world. While he is doing a cover here, his writes his own songs that have won an untold number of award and accolades. By the way, his music production company rearranged the song in this show. He joined this music show in order to promote his production company which was relatively new then in order so show off their song production and arrangement skills as this show is about veteran singers rearranging classics and performing them in a completely new way. Thus, music analysis part of your reaction really hits the spot.

I'm glad you introduced another singer with amazing talent. I've listened to a few of his other songs, and I'm adding them to my playlist. His music reminds me a little of the Carpenters, and I was a big fan. JJ Lin definitely must be added to your reaction schedule. I did a little research on him and found that besides being a singer, he is a songwriter, music producer, businessman, and novelist. I need to check out his writing next.
Kindly review JJ Lin's tribute to 3 late great singers (David Bowie, Prince & George Michael). It was a live performance of their English songs organised by KKBox music platform back in 2016. I believe you will be vowed by his excellent singing even for English songs.
jj usually isn't a gritty singer, he's a lot more old school pop/r&b, but this is part of a singing competition where they were covering songs by other artists, and he's really good at putting his own spin on them. his own songs are a whole different flavour - it would be really cool if you covered one of his originals!
JJ Lin is a well-known singer-songwriter in Singapore. When Zhou Shen was a student and before his debut, he imitated JJ Lin when he was singing online without showing his face.

Thank you for doing the reaction of JJ. Greatly apperciated. As FYI, JJ Lin also had released English EP previously. Such as songs : Steady my Love, Like You Do, Head On, While I can, All In Your Mind, Not Tonight & The show with Steve Aoki, Bedroom with AnnMarie. He also had collab a song with Jason Marz (I’m Alive). Mandarin version of Despacito with Luis Fonsi etc etc. the teacher he had was the same teacher who taught Michael Jackson. Also, this song the name basically mean “it doesn’t matter if I win the world if I must lose you”

Zhou Shen did a special appearance at JJ’s concert. JJ is a well known singer songwriter. Glad to see him on your show. I really enjoy Chinese music scene. I especially enjoy that they have music based shows with famous singers. Wouldn’t that be something in US. Check out Zhou Shen’s OST song for Decoded and his performances of Silence of the Lamb and Not a Word I believe from his latest musical variety show. He is just so good.
