Could you explain the toothpaste deal again? I don’t understand what went wrong.

What is the proper order to scan all the toothpaste scenario?
I thought it would be to scan the $3.99 Colgate toothpaste first thinking the $2 coupon would attach to it and then everything else would fall in place. I only have one account so that’s all I was able to try. I explained to the cashier the situation and he manually added the $4 for me
