    The worst example is someone had a regular art channel until they started selling their own products. Selling it as artists grade when it clearly wasn't. They couldn't take any criticism and became hostel taking it all personally. Then the fans attacked. Sadly this sweet seeming person showed who they really are. Glad you brought the subject up many won't.

      You are right. Not only the YT did not take criticism well. Their legion of fans went to other You Tube channels which reviewed their paints and left nasty comments after the review of said products was less than perfect. So disappointing!

      Lol, yes it's buyer beware!😂❤ it's easy to be influenced by fancy art! I love the budget art videos where the artist swears they're as good as the high-end supplies! ... but then they never use them again.😅

      @@windywednesday4166 I don't have enough $ to buy cheap (and bad) art supplies. 🤭 I would rather save up, buy good quality stuff, even if in smaller quantities, and fully enjoy the experience. Plus, with established brands you know where the item comes from, where and how it is made, what kind of safety standards they use. The "one product wonder" brands are so dubious and opaque in all those categories...Not for me, thanks!

    I am seeing so many youtube " artists " who purchase something, do no research as to what the product is supposed to do,and how to use it, then say how bad it is, because it doesnt perform to their expectations. If i can take the time to watch a video put out by the creator of the product i am interested in, and watch other youtuber's videos, before spending my money. surely, they can too, especially since they are supposed to be helping us make informed choices. These are the creators who ❤ positve comments, thanking them for putting them off purchasing something, they have not researched, they have incorrectly used them, but all they are interested in is clicks and likes. These are the youtubers i do not trust, and i immediately hit the dislike and do not recommend the channel button. I do not have time to waste on people i do not trust

      I understand your frustration. When I look at a product I always try to tell people how to use the product as best as I can. Sometimes it doesn't work for me with the way I create but I always try to give people an understanding of how it could work for them if they create differently. I'm just guessing though since I don't use the product that way. Sometimes it's hard to cover all the bases but you at least need to give it a fair try. 👍🏻

    Trends on channels I see beginning is the creator piecing out their own supplies and reselling them for their viewers to try. The second one is saying in their videos that they beg (my word) companies for product while also saying that the views, affiliate links and patreon are the whole reason they can afford to get new supplies to try.

    I don't really copy other artists. I watch them for entertainment value. Sometimes it's to light a fire under myself to create something. I go through artist's block a lot. I try to paint every day which leads up to a huge build up of work that I have nowhere to store. That's life.

    Happy World Watercolor Month!
    Speaking honestly…is there anything about the new Paul Reubens paint palette that would inspire experimenting or exploring new techniques or is it just another pretty palette?
    Are you doing any challenges, or challenging your subscribers to anything for World Watercolor month?

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  Před 5 dny +2

      Paul Rubens tries and they try real hard but in my opinion I would spend the money on Rosa Gallery rather than them. Some people like them, and some CZcamsrs "think they're great" but I'd probably even buy Cotman or Lukas Aquarelle over PR.
      No, no watercolor month challenges for my audience. They may be inspired to use markers today so I don't want to stifle any inspiration they may have. There's nothing wrong with it but we don't do specific challenges here. It's more like, find what inspires you in the moment and just create something. I love watercolor though so I'll be looking at everyone's art they create this month. I hope you create something you are truly satisfied with. 🙂

  • @selmag5819
    @selmag5819 Před 5 dny +2

    i thought this would be about those people who say "i bought it with my own money", but then they turn out to be "ambassadors" for this brand or they use advertising key words like "life-time-purchase" or "exciting" or "family business"/"small business" for that brand or they - without context - mention a specific product in a seemingly random fashion 3 times in a video ("my sendak") or you get gaslighted or silenced (deleted comments) when you ask everyone who's been advertising a product why they didn't mention one very specific characteristic of a product and first people answer by saying "no, i didn't feel that", next person will say "didn't feel that, but the product-company-people were ass rude in other respects" and after a month 2 people answer and act like it was an obvious trait, but that it would go away after a while (then why not mention it if you experienced it yourself?!).
    good and bad people. well in my experience, it is not that simple. despicable people and good people are not that easy to distinguish from each other anymore. the "good" start with authenticity and once they have enough followers and patreons they sell it to the highest bidder, it seems. and users feed on everything they are being served. there is no critical voice left on artTube. but still credibility is real and fragile. once it's gone, it's gone for good.

      You make a lot of good points here that didn't occur to me at the time. I only watch maybe 1 or 2 of the larger art CZcams channels so I haven't seen this as much or it just didn't affect me as much. The brand ambassador thing would piss me right off though. Gets my goat when the artist takes great pains to say they’re not sponsored… but they got the product free!
    Sponsorship doesn’t just mean being paid cash… receiving free product, goods and/or service is sponsorship too! Just be honest… we don’t care!
    Also they swatch the products and review it from that… how is swatching a “review”?

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  Před 4 dny +1

      I understand what you are saying and I used to say the same thing. In the business sense a free product is not a sponsorship unless money changes hands. Many products get sent without any obligation to even review the product. I have received several items I did not review because it doesn't fit my audience. It also isn't a sponsorship if you can say whatever you want and give your honest opinion without talking points. However, being honest about being sent the product for free should be stated outright so the viewer knows. As long as that is mentioned I'm good with it.

    Thanks for going over this aspect of art videos. The content creator has quite a dance to get around all the angles, there is so much to consider. People like to use what they see you using... exactly what you're using! I'm a bit of a wild card and I feel it! So, I can see why they want to avoid products that are no longer available. Diane Antone leans heavily on kuretake because of the way it shows up so bright in the videos... and it suits her work.
    When I decided to try watercolor, I watched videos and found reviews for inexpensive beginner sets. If I had to spend $200-$300 to get set up I never would have started! ... and it's good to try different things till you figure out what you like. I ❤️ love my Rosa Gallery, but my Meeden budget set help me realize that I like paint that doesn't have honey in it. Its a journey. ❤😊

We should all try to enjoy it and help each other along. 🙂

    Before I got "suspicous by default" I tended to believe the raving reviews of those "artists" and would've bought crap if I hadn't read the customer reviews - mainly at A. - thoroughly.
    The first comments are about a paint "scandal" and I'm pretty sure to know who is meant. It reminds me of a brush review Lindsay The Frugal Crafter did. She tried so hard not to be negative while having to be negative because the brushes weren't good. And the "brush designer" wasn't happy, it seems she hadn't thought about considering Lindsays honesty before asking her for a review. Instead of listening and acting accordingly, like Paul Rubens did with your remarks.
    This kind of people consider themselves deeply insulted as soon as they get criticized the slightest. This behaviour sadly becomes more and more common. Add to that the tendency to post every "slight" on social media to gather ones following against "the enemy" and it's getting ugly 😐I'm lucky to have channels to follow whose creators are sane and healthy in a sufficiently weird way - except for the channels for "political educations", there I often have my doubts 🤣

      @@IllustrationsByPete It's now obvious to me that I have a very selective memory because Lindsay's review startet with the paints, and I now think it's definitely the same video the first commenters talk about 🤣 At the time I watched I kind of guessed that it'll be a "bad review" because of the carefully chosen words in the first two minutes. If you go to her channel and search for "Do These Paints "Spark Joy?" you may enjoy the deconstruction of an overly confident "designer". Very interesting is the update she added to the infotext for the video.
      I have to admit the mean part of me enjoyed that review tremendously 😆 Sometimes I enjoy the negative product reviews more than the useful ones, one of my favourites is someone peeling off "the ugly wire and plastic stuff" of a Quill Brush and then giving one star because "the brush is defective" 🤣

    This makes no sense. If one like granulating and someone reviews the opposite then why are they watching? Ha. And what people mean when they say they’ve paid their own money for a product is that it isn’t a sponsorship. A review is just a review on their personal opinion of a product. It makes no difference whether it’s given to them or not. A sponsorship is under contract and cannot have an honest review. It is basically a commercial. You have to say what is contracted and you’re paid good money for it. But they’re commercials that companies are willing to pay good money for because these are people who are well loved by subscribers. You can’t trust these. No different than tv.Look. You don’t understand much of anything when it comes to CZcams. Your video sounds a bit like you’re bad mouthing other CZcamsrs out of jealousy. It sounds bad. I’ve always given truthful reviews, whether I’ve been given a product or I’ve paid for it. I’ve bought plenty of items I don’t end up caring much for and I will tell people why I like or don’t like a product but it comes down to this, it is my personal opinion. And trust me I’ve had people go off on me because they like something I don’t and I’ve said so. I learned in time to preface it with “this is my opinion on the product. But I give facts. So don’t throw everyone into this trash heap because you really don’t know what you’re talking about. And the next thing is, it is called plein air painting when someone paints outside from life! And we do clean our brushes.

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  Před dnem

      I wasn't trashing anyone. I was making a funny commentary on the opposite of what everyone says. Everyone says you can't trust CZcamsrs who get sent products because they want more products so they will always review them positively. I was turning that on its head and saying you can't trust CZcamsrs who pay their own money because they can have reasons they may justify their purchase. I review stuff all the time. This wasn't an angry rant or trying to say CZcamsrs don't do fair reviews. My audience knows that I never take what I am saying seriously. I just rant to rant. I hope you don't feel personally offended by the video. It was designed to be more entertaining than anything because every time I review a product I was sent I receive comments on how I review it. And I know people clean their brushes when they paint outside. 😂 I paint outside. I just said that if someone paints inside a studio they will have a different experience than people who are painting outside. Anyway, I'm sorry this video was so disturbing to you and please know if you ever decide to watch another video of mine that I am just having fun, often over exaggerating for entertainment sake, and just looking to encourage people to create art.

      Oh and, people mostly watch my reviews because they enjoy listening to me ramble. A lot of them do not use the products I'm reviewing and a good amount of them don't even use them the way that I do, which is ironic given the topic. They are an awesome group and I appreciate everyone for humoring me. 🙂
