eddie saninocencio I was a Marine from 1967 to 71, when ROK Marines served in Vietnam. My drill instructor at Parris Island, had stories that would give you nightmares. Let’s just say that they did not abide by the Geneva Convention when they swept through a village. I later took Tae Kwon Do after hearing that they were all black belts and practiced while in the field. I never got that good at it though.

Mostly because the Republic of Korea was underdeveloped at the time. We had outdated IJA doctrines, outdated equipment and training, as well as little to no good commanders, so it's not that hard to guess how horribly we've done in the first third of the war. It was only after the US 'Koreanized' the ROK troops in which we performed much better in the later stages of the war, that was the start of our boost to becoming one of the better armies throughout the world.

In 1969 I was in a US Army helicopter unit at the Nha Trang Airbase. We had no regular US Army to defend our support military units in the Nha Trang area (about 12,000 men). But we felt very safe because the ROK White Horse Division was assigned to provide ground defensive units in and around the Nha Trang area. In the Tet Offensive of 1968 (an invasion by the NVA and Viet Cong) rushed into the City of Nha Trang to capture the train station, radio station, and a few other key points. Within 3 days the ROK recaptured all those key points and killed over 300 bad guys as well. The ROK is one of the best-trained group of soldiers in the world.

As an incentive to urge the reluctant US to sign the US-ROK Defense Treaty in the aftermath of the Korean War, Syngman Rhee offered John Foster Dulles to put in "mutual" clause, saying "We Koreans are not free-riders; we will help you, the US, every way we could in your effort to bring peace to greater Asia." Dulles did not think much of the offer coming from the head of a war-torn nation. However, ironically, it was the US, not the ROK, who became the first beneficiary of the "mutual" clause of the treaty: Vietnam War.

When he was young, Captain Seok Hae-gyun served in the Navy for a long time. When the ship was kidnapped, he deliberately broke the ship and took time to prevent pirates from moving the ship to the coast of Somalia. In addition, the number of pirates and armed status was notified to the ROK Navy through a messenger. When the operation started, the pirates found out that they had been deceived by him and shot him an AK-47. However, he survived despite being shot by five bullets. He was very brave and clever.
There were 13 pirates, of which 8 were killed by special forces of the ROK Navy. The rest were arrested and tried in Korean court, and they were sentenced to life imprisonment.

A few years ago I had the honor of meeting a ROK SEAL's commander (retd.) here in Hawaii. It's quite possible he was in command during the Gulf of Aden action. On vacation with his wife, he was wearing a Trident on his baseball cap. At first I thought it was another case of "stolen valor" which is particularly prevalent overseas. But we had exchanged contact info. & 1 week later I received an email thanking me for inviting them to ride along to the summit of Mauna Kea. They only had a rental car & the trip requires 4x4. Attached was a photo of him reviewing one of his teams. The fact I was initially skeptical makes me all the more angry at real Stolen Valor asshats.

It's an extremely hard op to pull off as the target structure is in the middle of sea, adding extra layers of complexities and uncertainties compared to a building, airplane, and bus hostage situation that are on the ground and static when rushed (not to say these are easy in anyway). This could've gone wrong or bad in so many ways. It's remarkable what they pulled off.

Only civie kids "rate" special forces. Nobody in the international special forces community gives a damn about ratings or tiers. There are alot of capable special forces out there and you won´t know much about their capability as many of them follow a "no publicity" policy. Its paradox but the better they do their job the less you usually will notice them. Its always the SFs that get rated up by the internet kids that - wanted or unwanted - gained media attention.

@@mgt5126 Yeah. It is kind of pointless. More or less all western (jn a wide sense, including Japan, SK, Australia, Israel etc) militaries/national police forces have excellent special forces. It dosen't matter if it's Delta Force, FBI HRT, GIGN, GSG9, SAS, Norways FSK, Swedens SOG, Sayeret Matkal, Japan's SFG and so on. They vary in scope and resources (US special forces will have far more available support than say Norwegian) but most of them are more or less modelled after each other (military SF often have a wider scope of capabilites than police SF tough) and train with each other. They attract the same kind of people and have similar training programs. Every single one of them would make short work of untrained somali pirates.

They can literally beat you to death with those martial arts. Guns or fists, these South Koreans could have killed these pirates nine ways to Sunday. Then hopped on a helicopter for a ride back to their main ship. And tossed back a bottle or two of Soju. Soju is a hard spirit, alcoholic beverage of about 70% alcohol.
