  • Do you like your rocks smooth? Never mind, it'll make sense soon enough.
Come all ye lovers of the sleek, late '70s yachty vibe. Actually, you know what? Come everyone else as well! If I've done what I sought out to do, there should be something of interest here for you, too.
In this episode: we do some counting, we compare and contrast, and (best of all) we get to hear Betty Davis pant suggestively. Lucky us. Also, The Eagles feature occasionally.
For those of you with a burning desire to generally support what I do, I'm here to help you along in that journey: www.buymeacoffee.com/fathommu... (but no pressure, friends☺️)

Preach. What follows an unfollow-uppable album? A Beatlesque precursor to solo careers. Not comparing HoCal to Abbey Rd, but as a fan during those transitions, I'm grateful to both bands for telling me we can still be friends 'after the love has gone.'

Nancy, your ability to analyze music astounds me. I'm older than you (a LOT), but your taste in music is a lot like mine. I have loved this song since it first came out, and my favorite part is that sweet, smooth guitar solo. I wonder if you might consider reviewing Tom Petty's Hypnotic Eye album--especially the song Shadow People and/or U Get Me High. These songs have such great guitar parts and are so textured. I'd really love to hear your thoughts.

You are my favorite nerd! BTW - you look fine to me.
BTW maybe "Smooth" harkens back to the "Cool Sound" from the late fifties. Jus' sayin'. Now onto Boz and "Lowdown". I don't think Boz was borrowing from R&B. I think he WAS R&B. I'll put that song, Lowdown, up against any R&B song anytime. It's got a deep groove.

think I was one of the guilty, using the smooth tag. it's probably a case of 'look don't enter the conversation if you don't appreciate the music' but i like to engage with the channel and watching you nail your colours to the mast is fun. soft rock on.
i'm gonna start working out for next week's episode. toughen up.
(🤷 you mean you're going to play red dead redemption 2 on PS4)
same thing same thing, hey i haven't got a leg to stand on here.

Are you kidding? I'm so glad that you did! It doesn't bother me one whit whether or not you enjoy the music - once you wrote out that comment, the whole episode basically wrote itself. Keep 'em coming. I have no complaints here. 😁

0:13 "And who's fault is this..? Not mine - I'm just the editor." Sorry, Nancy... It was clearly your fault - because you didn't eat when you should have. That will always hurt your focus.
I thought for sure you were going to say - I Can't Tell You Why... I'm going to do this next song... but I just had to. ; )
"I'm a big chord girl." Made me wonder if you have a fireplace... A cord is a LOT of wood.
Looking at the beautiful Philodendron coming down the left side of your piano... I am wondering if you name your plants..? I have one much like yours - who's name is Phil.
Love that cover of "Roget's Encyclopedia of YACHT ROCK". I think it won "Best Cover" in the 1987 International Book Awards.
Enjoyed your explanation of "upper extensions"..... but it left me wondering - are there "lower extension" as well..?
It definitely meets all the criteria you have put forth.
But I never cared for the term "Yacht Rock". To me, it's just a very nice slow love song.
Nice job of clarifying what you meant when you said - "Everything in this recording has a space carved out for it". "Nothing sounds like it's being muddied by anything else".
12:45 For me, the high vocal part - "I can't tell you why"... is the highlight of the song (my favorite part of the song).
13:49 "It doesn't have the edginess of funk". I was captivated by the eyes of the artist on that album cover. She has Betty Davis eyes.
14:49 The words you use to describe those Steely Dan chords you love... "beautiful, lovely, angelic, heavenly, divine and celestial". I hope Donald and Walter get to watch you saying that about them.
15:45 And then you follow that with these words describing the guitar solo at the end of "I Can't Tell You Why"... "instantly recognizable, iconic, pained, emotive, expressive and howling".
Also liked your comments on how they "teased" the listeners with a small morsel of the guitar solo earlier in the song - and then gave the full course at the end.
17:00 Again... this time with the nice descriptive comments on the guitar play... "beautifully communicate yearning and longing and desire".
You say - it peaked at only #8... like that was a bad thing. The Eagles had 18 songs that made the top 40 in the US - and only 7 of them charted higher than "I Can't Tell You Why".
Your bloopers are always great! Thanks for doing these videos.

I view that album as Exhibit A in the case of Innocence v. The 1970s, kind of like the musical equivalent of that scene in Boogie Nights when Eddie/Dirk hits rock bottom after nearly being killed while trying to rip off the drug dealer (Alfred Molina). By 1979 the Eagles of “Peaceful Easy Feeling” were gone, sounding spiritually exhausted by the cultural zeitgeist of hedonistic, coke-fueled narcissism, leaving little but a darkness-heralded by the none-more-black cover-that was far removed from the vibe that they’d built their career on. Dark disposition, dark subject matter… hell, even eviscerating the frat boys that probably represented a good chunk of their record-buying audience. No wonder they called it quits after this.
As for where this song falls in the ‘yacht rock’ universe, it might be smooth on the surface but it’s lacking any joy or hope at its center-it’s simply emotionally defeated-which I think keeps it on the fringes of inclusion. If yacht rock is a school dance, this song is standing alone in the shadows at the edge of the auditorium, wondering why it came and eager for the night to be over.
How on earth do you find time to knit?

Love your take, Mark - outstanding and thought-provoking contribution to the conversation. I especially enjoy your thoughts on why it can't find a place among the pantheon of quality smooth '70s rock.
I think the Eagles themselves described Hotel California in similar terms to your comment about innocence v. the South Cali 'star-maker machinery' - you're spot on.
      Thanks for your input!

If Steely Dan are yacht rock then I must like yacht rock. They probably are a bit of an outlier to my usual tastes. Perhaps I should explore the genre further.
I was one of the people who said that I don't like the Eagles and maybe this episode helps me explain why. Here they do yacht rock and they're no Steely Dan. With their country rock songs that I'm more familar with, they're no Gram Parsons. They just don't do it for me.
Still a fun video that I very much enjoyed watching.

Thank you for watching and contributing to the discussion. I'm a huge Steely Dan fan, and I truly believe that they far exceeded the skill of any of their peers - so in a sense, all other yacht rock is a sort of poor man's Steely Dan, right?

As for The Long Run album, I was very disappointed with this album as I had high expectations after their previous albums with Hotel California being the zenith of their body of work. The Long Run is not a horrible album, it is decent at best but I felt that they were capable of better work. The recording of Long Run came at a difficult time for the band, creative difference, five years of album, touring, album touring cycle was really taking a toll. Don Henley admitted this was a period where they had difficulties in writing new material. After their brake up their solo work was much better.
The title track of The Long Run sounds more like a theme to a 1980s TV sitcom. In The City, lyrically it was an attempt to paint a pitcher of being trapped in urban decay with no way out but it just comes off as sounding Cliché from rich rock stars. Heartache Tonight while not one of their better songs is a good radio hit. King of Hollywood is a great song and should have been a centerpiece of the album was it goes into the darker side of Hollywood. A unveiling of a Harvey Weinstein that would come along in later years. They could have gone with this theme throughout the album.
I Can't Tell You Why and Sad Cafe' are decent songs but they have never done too much for me. I do like the guitar solo at the end of I Can't Tell You Why. As for the rest of the album, the remaining songs sounds like filler tracks or songs that could have been used for B sides. The Long Run did not live up to what I was hoping for. In the early 2000s the group did take a brake from touring to record a new album Long Road Out of Eden which was much better and a good album to finish off with. I enjoyed watching your video and hearing your observations on music parts. I just had to get my two cents in on The Long Run.
