Free Shipping is never free. EBay and selling platforms charge sellers for charging ship prices.

  • Just a reminder; Free Shipping is never really free. Anyone who still thinks this in 2023 is delusional. Sellers have to either come out the pocket and pay or include it into their selling price. Sites like eBay charge the sellers extra for charging shipping and claim they do it as an incentive for us not to charge shipping… that doesn’t even make since when someone has to pay it and it’s not them!

Just a little extra knowledge. You know this video won’t get any views unless I pay for it… and I’m not.

I LOVE how you also have to pay a tax on a fee that is based off of the tax.
Plus its nice when the shipping is say 29.50 and then ebay charges you like $33.
AND how the fee you have to pay to ebay also includes a fee on the shipping and tax not just the principal.
its pretty hard to make money unless you overcharge.

Right, and who wants to do that? The platforms make more money than us but we resort to this in order to somehow... work from home.

The real reason shipping isn't free is because it's added into the price of the item when using free shipping. If the seller isn't doing that then they are doing it wrong. The fee is based on the total money transaction. They did this because sellers abused the no fee on shipping in the past by having high shipping costs with low item cost.

True. And I still see some sellers doing it. They will mark something as $29.95 and shipping $125

That part, I understand. However, as a new ebay reseller, I'm still confused about one thing: since I charge shipping, and ebay takes the shipping charge out of my acct, how do I get reimbursed for it? I've only made 4 sales so far, and while ebay has sent me the money (minus their profit), I haven't seen any reimbursement for my shipping costs. What am I not understanding about the procedure?

If you charge shipping the buyer pays it to Ebay and it's added to the total that you get. Then, if you buy the label through Ebay you'll pay less than normal USPS which basically helps cover packing supplies. Media mail does not get that discount though.

@@craigwinans1948 OK, thank you. That was what I thought. However, I thought I would be getting more money deposited into my acct, knowing that ebay takes an average of 13%. So I still don't know how they're coming up with the amounts they deposited.

@craigwinans1948 is right. It seems like you don't get the reimbursement because they charge it to the customer and then add it within all the totals. Then after the fees; it just barely still seems like you got anywhere. You have to make many sales a day to see the actual profit if you ask me. Ebay used to be a great business from home; now it surely is a hobby and to just get rid of a few things.
