Constructable is an interactive drafting table that produces precise physical output in every step. Users interact by drafting on the workpiece using a hand-held laser pointer. The system tracks the pointer and implements its effect by cutting the workpiece using a high-powered and fast laser cutter.

WOW, this is a fantastic project! Congratulations guys!
The user draws using a regular laser pointer. We then track the laser pointer using an overhead camera. When the user turns the laser pointer off, we beautify the users draw path, then send the sketch to the laser cutter. As you can see in the video we have 15 different laser pointers that all have a specific purpose (e.g. one for drawing straight lines, one for making gears etc.). We detect which laser pointer is currently used and based on that decide which geometry needs to be created.
The artist is called Wasaru and the song is "old story". Just google him and you will find his music on his webpage (you can download it for free).
It's not clear from the video, so let me explain this: We use off-the-shelve presenter laser pointer that have three buttons. The middle button only turns the beam on so that users can position the laser dot (but the system does not yet track the pointer). The other two buttons actually trigger the different modes of cutting, one button triggers the "cut through" mode and the other triggers the "sketchline engraving" mode. Only when the user presses these buttons we actually capture the drawing.
Nice. Would be better if there's a projection overlay to give user real time feed back.

How do you set the dimensions of the shapes though? IE the initial box size and circle diameters? Can you supplement the input commands numerically before it's sent to the cutter?

i notice the laser leaves a trail at one point in the video, but i did not notice this trail for most of the video.
to me it seems that this laser trail is the physical output of the laser portion of the process but how is the trail created? is there another device within the machine?
once the drawing is done how does the drafter know their lines were straight, etc?

I think a better solution and less cumbersome one would be to use one pen with Bluetooth or some other short range RF. Then, communicate with the pen via off-screen panel switches/buttons that indicate the desired shapes. MAJ
Ни разу не видел чтобы люди могли на столько точные линии рисовать:) Там где показан квадрат и внутренние скругления по углам точка луча от карандаша идет по иному вектору нежели рисует лазер, а учитывая что нет рядом большого умного компьютера или о нем ничего не говорится, это просто обман, возможно люди хотели показать возможности лазера и простоту его использования, а не "новую технологию"
3:50 the user clearly (& accidentally i imagine) goes over some of the central lines with the "finger-joints" laser pointer, yet this doesn't trigger the machine to finger-joint them.

Actually, let me modify that idea. No need for communication with the pen. The panel buttons just need to send the correct shape info, just like the current pens do now.
