we got a similar coop 5 years ago and did the upgrades that you talk about. caulking and painting. ours doest have wheels for moving though. we put ours on treated 4x4s so it wouldn't be setting on the ground. we use ours for a brooder and a grow out coop. ours is still very solid but this year it did need a fresh coat of paint and fresh caulking. with care these can last quite a few years.

how did you install the predator proofing around the perimeter, if any? did you put wire mesh around it?

  • @LeaC816

Last year, I was moving and had ONE chicken left which my daughter was attached to as a pet. I am in a suburban setting and needed an instant coop and bought one of these prefab things. Due to my time crunch I literally put the thing together and sprayed it with a water sealer, let it dry and put the chicken in. She’s still in it. I did build a solid predator proof run and simply set the coop inside it as soon as I could. I haven’t had any leaking issues and overall it’s been fine in inclement weather. That said, I definitely don’t think I’d try to move it at this point, I’m pretty sure it would fall apart. These things are incredibly thin and basically made of wood veneer and trim. You definitely pay for the easy assembly and cute factor and not a quality built or sturdy chicken coop. They would be awesome as a brooder/grow out coop under a covered porch or elsewhere protected from the elements and predators but out in the open even with all the reinforcements you mentioned I highly doubt the coop would last the lifespan of the chicken unless they are meat birds!
IMO an alternative that’s just as cute but more sturdy than these is to find an old Little Tykes playhouse someone’s kids have outgrown and convert it. There’s tons of ideas for this online. You end up with something that lasts a lot longer and you will probably spend less on it as a project overall.

You did a fine review, basically telling me by the time I waterproof this box I paid for, I could have used that money to build a proper coop, but maybe it won't look as cute, but it won't leak or rot. Whoever sent this to you to review, didn't realise that you give an honest review. God bless.

I think this is the first review I’ve seen where there reviewer took time to discuss and implement upgrades which I think adds value to both the manufacturer and potential customers. Thanks Danny.

I ordered a rabbit hutch from the same company, and honestly it's been junk. If we didn't have extra tools, and screws, and a drill to drill pilot holes for the wheels (which was not mentioned at all in the instructions) it would have been even worse. It's a very nice looking hutch, but I don't imagine it would last much longer than a year. We have treated ours very gently, and have had it since April, and it's not long for this world. It is rickety and feels very cheap. We are very handy people and have extensive construction experience, which helped us reinforce ours better, but I don't know that I would recommend it to anyone. I also wanted to mention that ours is for an indoor rabbit, even though it is sold as an indoor/outdoor hutch, if a predator came along or any heavy storms, the thing would just collapse. I was pretty disappointed, and I just want to make sure people are aware of what they are ordering 💚💚💚

You are so right on the water leaks - and some weak construction. It definitely should not be put in the weather - as is. Serious upgrades are needed. We bought one a few years ago, put it outside and it lasted about 8 months to a year and we even sealed it better and used the pressure-treated wood on the bottom. In a nutshell it LOOKS good but you'd be better off building one yourself.

It’s cute but , this structure will not last . Lots of modifications needed verse the price of purchase. It could be done but is it worth it to you , for me that would be a no . On another note , exactly who is the manufacturer? Is it a made in America product? These kind of things are very important to me , exactly who am I supporting by making this purchase ? Hopefully not my adversaries.

We worked on ours by building a platform with a bottom to get the building off the ground..it stands about 3 ft off the ground...we made latters..we added a extention with a wooden dog house and added tin for roof also added perch so my few hens roost up under roof. Finished the whole thing with white house paint. We also have a run made with 2 sets of dog run pannels and our set up is under our hickory trees and surrounded by a flower garden. Really made it 1 of a kind and very pretty looking. The platform/ base sets it up so chickens are at eye level...but the only sleep and lay eggs in it and have a little enclosed yard of thier own.

Having purchased one of these a few years ago, I TOTALLY agree with your assessment. I took the time to paint everything with an exterior paint before I put it together. I did not seal the gaps, though. In less than a year it was falling apart. The tongue and groove walls of the nesting box sagged, the roof virtually disintegrated. The wire pen pieces held up better than the house part. If you need something in a hurry and you have the money, sure. But without your suggested upgrades there is no way it will last any time at all. I could build something similar, and cheaper, out of pallet wood and it would be just as good if not better.

I had been wondering if buying a prefab coop would be a waste of money. All of the upgrades you mentioned seem easy enough to do. I had not taken the time to even look closely at the prefabs at TS or other places they are sold because I knew the wood was not very good. This helps tremendously. With something like this I could do it all myself, including the upgrades. I definitely would need it in a covered area, but that’s good for the chickens in the Louisiana heat anyway. It would give me time to build a larger coop & run around it, too.
This is a really good review, Mr Danny. I especially love the the points you made about the upgrades. Well done, Sir!

Good review Danny, and suggestions for improvements. My suggestions would include getting some metal flashing, remove the roof caps and put a piece on the ridges and then put on the roof caps. You can also do the same thing where the run roof abutes the side of the coop. Then get a piece of inner tube or EDPM pond liner and put that on the wall above the nesting box roof to give you a seal/gasket to keep water from running down into the coop and the nesting boxes. Finally, go get a couple of larger dolly wheels on brackets. They will raise it up and help clear your treated base plate, and help roll easier over a soil/grass area.

Danny, I absolutely love you! That was one brutally honest review! Yes, it's a cute little thing, but I don't think it would ever be for me. My brother built my coop back in 2010 and it's still going strong. Thankfully, Dad taught him a lot over the years. I could almost hear Dad talking in your review. I'm in the country and mine is 8' x 10' x 5' high made from mostly 2x4's. It's heavy and I can't move it by hand, but it is very strong and predator proof. I once shot a fat old ground hog that was climbing up the side of it. lol Our local bear has never tried to get into it, nor have any skunks, raccoons fox or any other critters. With the upgrades you mention, I think this little coop & run would be good starter coop for someone in town or the suburbs. Great vid and review. Much love and blessings!!

With respect, the chicken house is more like a toy doll house than something useful to experienced chicken keepers. My first impression is that chickens need more space to walk around, scratch around and eat grass. Our chicken coop is 7' wide x 10' long x 8' tall. We used normal 2" x 4" x 8' studs for the walls with OSB interior walls, exterior paneling and pink fiberglass insulation. We have both an insulated big "people door" and a little chicken door/opening on both ends. That way we can open the big doors for cleaning. If the temperatures drop below 0°F we can block the doors down to cut the size in half to keep cold out better while simultaneously leaving enough air flow for the chickens to breathe comfortably. Our coop has thermostatically controlled dual stage heating, with the first stage being comprised of two 250-watt infrared heat bulbs hanging from the ceiling. The second stage is a thermostatically controlled 1500-watt space heater in case the winter temperatures drop below 0°F. The first stage thermostat is set for 50-55°F, and the second stage thermostat is set for 38°F and placed close to the ground to register the coldest place in the coop. The framing is fastened to a concrete "stem wall"/foundation with bolts, and we left the floor dirt for easy cleaning and longer life. When you open the big doors, the breeze keeps you from choking on the dust stirred up by cleaning. I used actual tree branches (10' long by 3" in diameter) for the two perches. The chickens love them and have worn off most of the bark. The chickens who don't sit on the perches sit on the window sills which we made big enough for the extra chickens to sit on. Some of the hens like to sleep in the nests (we have 12 nesting boxes), which are warm because we used styrofoam to insulate all sides but the openings. This year I aspire to run an 8" duct from the garage to the chicken coop so the cool swamp cooler air can exit the garage and flow through the coop during the summer instead of just exiting into the outside air. That will make the coop more comfortable in the summer head (we set an all-time record of 107°F this year). Right now we are dealing with foxes, so I have to learn how to be a skilled fox hunter. I don't want the foxes to suffer, so I will use live traps and dispatch the foxes at close range with my trusty Ruger 10/22. Then I will decorate the fences around our property with fox tails as a warning to other foxes. We put DE (diatomaceous earth) on the floors and in the nests, and then cover it with straw in the nests and wood chips on the floor. We don't go over 40 chickens, but there is natural attrition. Thanks to the foxes, we are down to 22 chickens. The foxes prefer hens because the roosters are bigger, stronger, more aggressive, and more determined fighters. Foxes are extremely smart and prefer "easy" food to "harder" food. I'm going to research fox recipes, because if I am forced to kill the foxes, we might as well eat them if they're any good. Sorry this got so long but, as an animal lover and experienced chicken steward, I wanted to provide a fair explanation of why I'm not exactly thrilled by the marketing of what I consider to be flimsy, too-small "toy" chicken coops. In a warmer climate, the little chicken coops might work with sufficient modifications, as you suggested. God bless you and Wanda and all your CZcams friends (like Living Traditions Homestead)! Keep the videos coming. I LOVE your beautifully restored Farmall Cub! If we had enough land, I would love to have one just like yours! But 2.5 acres is not really enough land for a tractor. A 2-wheeled BCS rototiller would do just fine. I consider you guys to be role models for how to live a good life. We aspire to do likewise, except with our smaller acreage, we would be ministering to people with smaller acreages. Deep South covers medium-sized acreages, while Living Traditions covers larger acreages, and Joel Salatin and PolyFace Farm ministers to larger acreages (aka "real" farms).

Danny, you gota watch your mic. Volume is going up and down. Yes, they leak like a sieve like it is. We went around the bottom with pressure lumber. Small breed chickens maybe 4.

You did a good review. But these thin materials lead to disappointment and a false sense of animals being secure. I can't understand how these are still selling they won't last one season! I'm glad you pointed out its not useable straight outta the box and has lots of vital improvements to be done before chickens are put inside. I felt like I had been taken and i let my birds down, they weren't protected at all it sold in yard sale for 30bucks with a warning from me to new owner.

If you put a fence around it to let the chickens have a bigger yard during the day, the doors are so close to the ground that they will catch on stuff. Might be better to mount the whole thing on a pressure treated 2x4 frame to get better clearance and then mount the wheels on the 2x4s.

Mr. Danny, you are 100% correct. We bought one of those a couple years ago and it’s basically worthless now. All swollen and falling apart. I ended up using a 10x10 dog kennel, wrapped with chicken wire and a tarp/wire roof. It’s just small enough to move. I’d suggest painting your new coop too, along with your other modifications.

I have a coop that size which works well for six hens. They are free ranging hens; and just sleep in the coop; and wait in the bottom area for me to open them up. Safe from weather and preditors. Snug and cozy at night; sun comes out and they're off looking for stuffage...

Use t posts and secure it to the ground. I built mine in a shed and it did fine. Moved it outside just before dark one evening and came out the next morning and the wind overnight blew it over and ripped the roof off. Wasn’t a lot of wind either. I bought some 2x2’s and built a stronger frame on the inside and 2x4 treated boards on the bottom for a more stable base and siliconed it up like Danny mentioned. I ended up putting it inside of the big chicken run as the run provided wasn’t very big to start with or very predator proof as Danny mentioned. It lasted 2 months then during our wheat harvest a storm blew up just before dark and the straight line wind that came with the storm literally shredded it. Ripped the roof off, tore the cheap wire, and broke and shredded the thin cheap wood and blew it into the corner of the run it was in. Surprisingly the chickens went unharmed.

I think that's the perfect chicken coop for prople who think it would be fun to have chickens and post pictures on their social media but will get tired of it all (and their chickens will die) before the weather rots that cute coop. (It IS cute.)

The area's where the roof water would come down could you use maybe like window flashing strip or thin rubber strip behind where the hinges attach? It is cute but agree with others.. to much extra work/cost to protect it from normal environment exposure for the $.

I brought one like this and haven't completed putting it together, LOL, I brought it because the price was less than $300, which was reasonable for me ,since wood had gotten so expensive. I got my baby chicks after i started putting it together and only ordered 4 chicks, because this was so small. I did order another bigger kit that you don't move

Not a fan of these. I wondered about how they hold up in wind, snow etc..I personally don't think my chickens would be happy with this. Chickens start fighting in small spaces especially when the weather turns nasty. Happy chickens = healthy chickens.

Yeah, improving designs is pretty much my constant mind. You can see the failures.. and I tell you I get so angry at times, that from a desk design to a honest appraisal, the two roads never seem to meet do they? Everything needs improving to actual usage. Those water issue areas, I would use Liquid Nail. Because of the sunlight issues, the caulks and so fourth just deteriorate eventually, liquid nail lasts forever but its a real pain to be feathering and cleaning up after. For the chicken poop area.. if you can find one of those plastic "politician signs" or coroplast that is UV stabilized or just paint it for the yard, that material would work too. Now that stuff is about 15 dollars a 4x8 sheet. But after voting times they get tossed usually. *shrug*
Did a good job on that nesting area custom drip line. Good times! Thanks for sharing!
